CELEBRATING THE SIUSLAWA Century of Growth

Ward Tonsfeldt, PhD.

This book traces the history of the Siuslaw National Forest from itsorigins at the beginning of the 20th century through its centennial year-2008. The Siuslaw's location on the Oregon coast has made the Foresta lightning rod for many public-land management issues. These includecontroversies surrounding the creation of national forests, Native Americanreservation issues, land fraud, "World War I lumber procurement, NewDeal resettlement programs, World "War II coastal defense, the heavytimber production of the post-war decades, and the late 20th centuryenvironmental movement. All of these play out against the spectacularscenery, the quiet communities, and the endemic economic problemsof the Oregon coast. The book relies on manuscript materials, reports, and photographs archived on the Siuslaw National Forest, at the KnightLibrary of the University of Oregon, and the Oregon Historical Society
