Forest Landscape Restoration through a Sustainable Wood Energy Value Chain

In cooperation with:

Biomass represents 39% of the energy consumption in Ghana. Charcoal and fire-wood are in particular the main energy source for cooking.

Therefore logging of fuel-wood is a main driver for forest degradation and deforestation, especially in the Bono-East and Savannah region.

This project aims to support the partner institutions to restore forest landscapes by establishing a sustainable wood energy value chain, jointly with landowners and farmers in 10 charcoal producing communities.

This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Environment (BMU) under the International Climate Initative (IKI).

In the funding area "Conserving natural carbon sinks/REDD+", IKI supports since 2008 partner countries in implementing the REDD+ mechanism and as well projects to support the approach of forest and landscape restoration “FLR” as part of the Bonn Challenge.

The total project budget is 4,5 Million Euros and the duration is 4 years (04/2019-03/2023)
