What a Fantastic event was had by all…ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2018 was the

19TH ANNUAL HOLLY DAY PARADE AND FAIR “Holly Days Around the World”

Presented by the Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade Committee for Forest Ridge Residents and guests. The event is dedicated to

increasing the community spirit of Forest Ridge By Joan Steinmetz, Chair of Holly Day Parade Committee

Dear Forest Ridge and The Ridge on Nob Hill Residents, It was a delightful day for all those who attended the 19th

Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade & Fair, where we sprinkle magic and community spirit over our beloved Forest Ridge neighborhood.

This year we were honored to have parade founder, Kitty Preziosi, as our Grand Marshal. Kitty and friends, Linda Lee Granger, Gloria Hood and Beverly Payne started this much loved tradition in the year 2000 and its rewarding to know we will celebrate our 20th Anniversary on December 7, 2019 ! MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!!

Both the young and the young at heart enjoyed wonderful live holiday music performed by the Indian Ridge Middle School Band and the marching band of Western High School. Performances by the South Florida Cloggers and Pure Dynamics Dance Studio along with their high energy musical floats are always a joy to watch. Our own resident singer Aurelie Lacelle, beautifully sang “White Christmas”, “Jingle Bells” and “All I Want for Christmas is You”, while riding in the parade. That is quite a feat! As always, the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club and Riki Frankel put together a shimmering holiday float which won the Best Float award again. Congratulations! Best Mini Float was awarded to first time entrants The Anderson Family for their “American Pride” entry. Best Marching Entry was awarded to the Western High School Marching Band. Best Youth Float went to South Florida Cloggers and Best Use of Theme went to long time participants the The South Florida Trail Riders. Congratulations to these winners along with South Florida Cloggers, Pure Dynamics Dance Studio and Aurelie Lacelle for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place wins for stage performances.

The past few months have been devoted to preparing the community to look beautiful in time for holiday visitors, homecoming residents, the Holly Day Parade, and hopefully provide a boost to Real Estate values.

To that effect, Management and onsite staff have a real juggling act to creatively time everything to come together all at once. This includes sprinkler repairs, mulching, pressure cleaning, annual flower rotation, landscape improvements and the stringing of over 35,000 lights and ornaments at all three main entrances including the front entrances to each sub Association.

With the annual and budget meetings, enhancement projects and routine maintenance, you can imagine that the staff at Forest Ridge has been vey busy. We believe that the results are just wonderful. The community looks beautiful and in time to show well to visitors who come for the events and the holidays.

If you would like to show your appreciation for the hard work and dedication put forth by your onsite staff, why not stop them when you’re next driving through the community? Jose, Dan or Alfonso would really value hearing your kind words of appreciation.

In January, the Managers begin a new round of violations with a fresh eye and reminder to look at your home for the following items:

o Landscaping needso Roof repair and cleaningo Mailbox repairso Unauthorized signageo Unapproved architectural changeso Driveways o House paint

With that little reminder, our big reminder, is to let you know that we, the staff at FirstService Residential, dedicated solely to Forest Ridge, do wish you and yours a safe, joyful and contented holiday season, from Us to You!!!

Pest Alert- Poisonous Puss CaterpillarsContact with the furry caterpillar can cause more

pain than a bee sting. National Geographic calls the puss caterpillar the most venomous in the U.S. -- sometimes causing more pain than a bee sting. Also known as an asp caterpillar, it’s the first stage in the life cycle of the Southern flannel moth.

Dr. Alfred Aleguas, director of the Florida Poison Center in Tampa, said the furry creatures are "really pretty," but can cause large rashes and pain so severe that people have ended up in the emergency room.

The soft hairs are a protective mechanism for the caterpillar and the poisonous spines will break off and stick in skin when they're touched, Aleguas said.

The caterpillars are most often found on oak and citrus trees and are most common during the spring and fall. Aleguas said his office has received about 30 calls so far this year regarding exposure to the puss caterpillar. So far 223 cases were reported.

Florida Poison Control said the puss caterpillar is a stout-bodied larva that can grow to an inch long when mature. The creatures are covered with gray or brown hairs. Under those hairs are stiff spines attached to poison glands.

Poison Control said not everyone experiences severe pain after coming in contact with the caterpillar, but it’s possible for some to have severe reactions that require medical attention.

If you come in contact with one of these creatures, Poison Control recommends placing clear tape over the affected area and stripping it off repeatedly to remove spines. You can also use ice packs to reduce stinging and follow with a paste of baking soda and water. Those with a history of hay fever, asthma or allergies, or if an allergic reaction develops, should contact a

doctor immediately.(Information found on Chanel 10 Tampa News web site..)

Hello Residents of Chapel Hill and Forest Ridge and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019!

As I write this article, it seems like time is fleeting so quickly…. We just enjoyed the Lighting of the Lights Ceremony Event “Forest Ridge Enchanted Forest”, hosted and produced by the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club for the FRMHOA. Then Thanksgiving…. then one week later the 19th Annual Holly Day Parade and Fair EVENT Extravaganza!… of course, then came all of the seasonal holidays and ……WOW!! I think we need a vacation… But now that the new year has arrived… we can settle down for a little while and relax… until the next event or holiday… OH! I just heard that we may have a new event… in March 31 a CAR SHOW EVENT!..look for the E mails and signs.. Then the SPRING FLING…APRIL 13… check the signs in case the dates change..…. So much fun for all….

In Chapel Hill, the board has been working very hard to resolve many issues and prepare for some large projects to come very soon… We will be having a homeowner meeting to discuss the details of the “Landscaping Project”.. and etc.. Look for the Emails… The community is coming into its 28th -29th year…and most of the landscaping is ORIGINAL.. with refreshing through out the years, where needed… Some residents have added plants that are NOT approved and the CHHOA is finding it difficult to maintain… We need to get back to our roots and to a sustainable landscape for our residents…As you know, per our documents, the CHHOA is responsible for the maintenance of the front and side yards and all common areas. This project will involve removal of trees that the Town of Davie approves are not suitable for location or health reasons. We will be working with the Town of Davie and Earth Advisors.

If you have any statues, fountains, rocks, special sculptures/items in your front and side yard…PLEASE REMOVE THEM… This goes

for paths/ stones, rocks or pavers to the rear yard.. which are NOT APPROVED FOR OUR COMMUNITY.. Please do not plant any new plants in the landscape…The work is projected to take some time, but in the end it will make our community and YOUR PROPERTY look fantastic.

As you know, the Board did NOT RAISE your monthly maintenance payment… it is still $180.00… however.. to cover the cost of future work with unforeseen price increases, we may have to do a Special Assessment… But we always work towards not having to do that…This will all be discussed at a future meeting of the residents and Board of Directors.

We are still looking for your updated contact information and E mail addresses…We need this information for our 2019 Resident Directory and incase of an emergency…PLEASE EMAIL this information to Karen Kubinec (see below)..as soon as possible.. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Recently, there was an Irrigation valve problem on the east side of Chapel Hill (Ivy Court)… we were not made aware of this until the lawns were dying… PLEASE LET US K N O W A B O U T A N Y O F T H E S E OCCURRENCES ASAP..

If you have any problems with your irrigation system.. for any reason… front, side OR Rear yard…Please notify Karen ASAP… so that she can have our maintenance man, DAN DANNA, check it out… This is a CHHOA irrigation system. If it is in your rear yard and damaged due to work you have done, you will be billed for the repair. Any where else.. it is the CHHOA responsibility.

Welcome to the New Year. For some reason as I get older the years seem to go by faster. If anyone

can explain this to me, please call ASAP. Well as the New Year begins, it’s a good time to review the medications in your household and look for items beyond date or expired. Although it is generally thought that drugs are safe beyond expiration, I can never recommend to use them. The expiration dates refers to a product stored in the original container in perfect conditions. Always keep prescription drugs in their original labeled bottles, for safety and don’t move over-the-counter products into your medications bottles. These are common things that I have seen many times. I have had many people come into the pharmacy with different medications in a single bottle and ask me to figure it out. This scares me that a significant patient health risk could occur. If a doctor tells you to change your dose of an existing medication, please ask for a new prescription and bring it to the pharmacist for documentation and the proper labeling. Mislabeled prescription bo t t l es can lead to d rugs e r ro r and hospitalization.

One of the more significant issues that I have with mislabeling and potential patient harm occurs with over-the-counter products. In the pursuit of great profits, many large drug companies try to overwhelm the shelves in the pharmacy with duplicate products with different names. This poses a danger to the general public as there is little oversight when someone grabs a “simple and safe” product. Examples of these are many. I will list a few and it’s scary. Extra strength Excendrin and Excendin Migraine are the same product. Advil tablets, caplets, liquigels and Migraine are all the same product, but Advil Joint and Muscle is double strength and all contain the same active ingredient ibuprofen. Motrin PM and Advil

PM are the same product. PeptoBismol and Kayopectate are the same product. Tylenol has many similar products and duplications. They all contain acetaminophen and too much of that is not good. Did you know that Tylenol Arthritis and Tylenol 8-hour has the exact same product. Tylenol Arthritis does not treat arthritis, it’s is just a long acting form of acetaminophen. Adult liquid Tylenol has been renamed Tylenol Cold and Sore throat. It is not a cold medication, it is liquid acetaminophen. In all Tylenol make 27 different products. It would be easy for someone to get confused and duplicate therapy and cause a health issue. Here are my other examples in the market place, and an educated consumer with access to pharmacist, is a great tool. When picking an over-the-counter product read the label and indications. Ask the pharmacist is the right one for you. Check if contraindicated with your other medications or disease states. Remember the best question is the one that is asked, not ignored.

Financial Health Resolution for 2019

The beginning of a new year is a popular time to stop and reflect on what it is we want to accomplish. Attaining financial health is often not one of the top priorities. However, we all want to grow our wealth, protect our loved ones, invest for our future, plan a better retirement, and manage debt. Then comes the overwhelming question, “How can I accomplish this?” which deflates the excitement felt at the beginning of a new year. But there is no need to despair, getting help to attain financial health is possible for everyone.

With work, family and other obligations, people often do not have the time or the inclination to effectively manage their finances. A financial professional can help to organize your finances and provide a roadmap towards financial health.

A good financial professional will attentively listen to your short and long term goals. They will gather your data and create projections that show how to accomplish your goals. These projections a re based on a se t o f r ea l i s t i c assump t i ons abou t i n fla t i on and

investment returns. Most important, a good financial professional will teach you how money works, how to take control of your money, and how to succeed.

Financial success is not reserved for the wealthy. This year, bring your financial dreams back.

Have a happy and prosperous 2019. For a COMPLIMENTARY Financial Needs

Hi Neighbors.

We hope you had much to be merry about and a joyous start to the new year.

Hopefully, you noticed that we had the signs at the front entrance refurbished. Over the last couple of years, thanks to your contributions, we have improved the roads, signs and lighting. With the improvements you all continue to make to your properties, the neighborhood has never looked better.

As always, we need to address just a few housekeeping matters.  We are into the dry months so please remember to water your grass. It appears that the parking situation is getting better and we thank you for your help. But please remember to park in your driveways at night and keep off the grass. If you were unable to take advantage of the group deal offered by Reliable Pressure Cleaning, please nevertheless contact a company of your choice if your roof or house needs cleaning.

If you have any questions about the rules and regulations governing our property or need to submit an ARB Application, please visit our website at oakgrovefr.com and access the "important documents" section.

As always, we appreciate your efforts to keep up your property. Give your neighbor a wave and a smile, they'll smile back.

I ’d also l ike to thank and recognize the Mahi Shriners, the entertaining and athletic South Florida Derby Girrls, my neighbors on the Rosewood Ct. float and Lorraine Hofheinz, who energetically put together three floats this year, one for The Real Men Wear Pink, one for The Nile Monitor Lizard and her long time float creation The Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of the parade floats, participants, sponsors and volunteers who come together to make this a day of magic.

Planning for the parade begins in the summer months, long before anyone is thinking about the winter holidays. by Agatha Christie & Gerald Verner Directed by Murphy Hayes

February 8 - 24, 2019

When a house party gathers at Gull's Point, the seaside home of Lady Tressilian, Nevile Strange finds himself caught between his old wife Audrey and his new flame Kay. A nail-biting thriller penned by the Queen of whodunits, the play probes the psychology of jealousy in the shadow of a savage and brutal murder. The investigation unfolds before our eyes and brings the story to a pointed ending.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, instead of telling you about another great Davie restaurant, I thought I'd add to the highlights of the Forest Ridge “Lighting of the Lights”.  On Saturday, Nov. 17th, the little fairies in the Forest Ridge Woman's Club, swarmed around the area by the tennis courts and turned our parking lot into an Enchanted Forest.  It was absolutely beautiful and if you didn't come out with your friends and family, I'm sorry you missed it.

As the crowd gathered, the evening started with a medley of songs by Steve Higgins, our very own FR neighbor and extremely popular professional singer.  Charming and personable he ended his entertainment with Here Comes Santa Claus and ... like magic (and thanks to the Davie Fire Department)  Mr. & Mrs. Claus dropped by to say hello to our children!   And Mr. & Mrs. Claus stayed until the last child had a chance to talk to Santa, received a candy cane and 3D glasses to add sparkle to the famous Forest Ridge lights.     Special thanks to Lynne and Brendan Grubb, who stayed to the very end.

And then… they turned on the lights.  Is there any other neighborhood with such a spectacular entrance?  Credit to Tom Bardash ( fo rmer FR Resident) of Magical Designs,

who really goes all out to show off  our lovely neighborhood.

As a 30+ year resident (one of the first FR families) I can't compare FR to any other neighborhood but none of my friends or relations has such spectacular holiday entertainment.

The Lighting of the Lights is sponsored by the Master Forest Ridge Master Homeowners

Association and produced and formally hosted by the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club.

While  I am a member of the Forest Ridge Woman's Club, I couldn't begin to count the number of meetings they had to coordinate this event.

Special thanks should go to  Riki Frankel of Southern

Orchard (with back up of her very terrific husband Ira)  who had the vision and planned to create this beautiful night for us all.

If you have a special restaurant or place that you think should be highlighted on this page…

please send me an E mail and I will check it out…E Mail: Lorraine Hofheinz ..

Are you ready to walk the walk? About 2,000 happy dogs are barking, “YES!” The Humane Society of Broward County is

busily preparing for its 29th Annual Spirit Walk for the Animals, presented by VCA Animal Hospitals, on March 2, 2019. The event takes

place at Huizenga Park in Fort Lauderdale and welcomes over 5,000 animal lovers and their furry companions.

Linda Sanders, Walk Development Specialist states, “If you’re an animal lover, there is no better place to be.” Last March, the event netted over $570,000 for the HSBC. The funds raised go directly back to the shelter to help care for the

animals, support low-cost services offered to the community and to continue their Humane Education programs.

Registration opened in August and fundraising has already begun. Participants can register online at Walk4theAnimals.com.

The Humane Society of Broward County is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that relies solely on fundraising, donations and limited grants to operate. There are still some Walk sponsorships available, so if you own or work for a business that may be interested, please contact Linda S a n d e r s a t 9 5 4 - 2 6 6 - 6 8 1 7 o r e m a i l i n fo@walk4thean imals .com. SEASONS GREETINGS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!

North Orchard is sparkling with holiday decorations and we wish everyone a peaceful & joyous holiday season.

As we wave good-bye to 2018 and welcome in 2019, we celebrate that your HOA is in good financial standing and home values continue to appreciate, as new homeowners realize that Forest Ridge remains a very desirable and friendly place to call home. We look forward to another year of smooth operations with Claire Lopez, our Community Association Manager.

School schedules are ending for winter break and we hope everyone takes their time when traveling through North Orchard & Forest Ridge with a consideration towards safety for the children playing, daily dog walkers, joggers and cyclists who enjoy making the most of our community and the outdoors.

The holiday season is a good-time to jump start that home improvement project. If you are considering a home improvement project, don’t forget your ARB (Architectural Review Board) form must be completed and submitted to acquire approval for exterior projects and major landscaping changes. It is this process that maintains the appearance of the community and ensures that one’s neighbor does not paint their home with an unapproved color combination or installs a roof or fence that does not meet the established criteria for the community. Your continued support and adherence to this requirement is greatly appreciated.

Finally, we continue to experience not so joyous issues with parking in the street. The property manager recently sent letters to residents who were found to be

parking in the street with regularity. To those of you who responded to the letters by moving your cars out of the roadway and into your driveways, we salute you. It makes the community a safer place to navigate when cars are not parked in or blocking the public right-of-way.

Should you need to contact our Community Manager representing First Service Residential, please reach out t o C l a i r e L o p e z w h o c a n b e r e a c h e d a t : [email protected]

WHAT’S COOKIN’? by Beverly Payne

PAGE 30

The one thing I have notice since I have moved down here, is no matter what kind of gathering it is, boiled shrimp is always on the table.  That to me is wonderful, since I LOVE shrimp!!

However, what I have noticed is that a lot of people miss the opportunity to make this dish ”their own”.  The best way to do this is by having your own “special”  dipping sauce to go with it.  Start with a known base, mayonnaise, ketchup or sour cream and add your favorite favors…you own special touch.

Below are 3 basic sauces that you can change up anyway you like in order to turn it into “yours”.  So, while you are drinking your favorite   cocktail, go into the kitchen and start creating your special shrimp cocktail, and like always…..LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!!

DASH SAUCE2 cups mayonnaise                           1 tablespoon ketchupdash of Worcestershire Sauce          1 teaspoon horseradishdash of tabasco sauce                       salt and pepper if needed Mix all together and serve

CREAMY LEMON SAUCE½ cup sour cream                    1 tablespoon chopped parsley1 tablespoon lemon juice             3 oz. cream cheese1 teaspoon lemon zest             1 teaspoon horseradishSalt/pepper to taste Mix together and serve  TIGER SAUCE1 cup mayonnaise         2 tablespoons or more of bottled Tiger Sauce. Mix and serve

HAPPY NEW YEAR!For those of you that don’t know me,

although after all these years you should have an idea of who I am and what I do. My name is Jill Sivert and I sell Real Estate! I’ve been selling real estate in Broward County for around 14 years. Which makes me comfortable (I say qualified) to answer all your real estate questions, comments and concerns. How’s the Market, What’s my House worth, Should I fix things or sell As-is, How Does it work using a Realtor, Can I Sell my house without using a Realtor, What is Tax Portability, Should I downsize, Will you reduce your commission (my favorite)?

For any of you that have waited until the first of the new year to get off the fence one way or the other about selling or staying, I’m here to help. You want to take a look at your house and see if you are ready to list it For Sale, then it’s time to start cleaning. Let’s look at what needs to be fixed, even though you are used to the front door lock needing a little key wiggle to open it, that means it’s time to change it. Does the toilet run longer than it should after you flush it, time to fix that. Is there a towel around the drain pipe under the kitchen sink, time to take care of that. Things you are used to a new buyer will look at that as a repair they don’t want to make on a house they are purchasing. Fix those things you have been meaning to repair, take care of those things your wife has been nagging you to replace.

Fresh coat of paint goes a long way to brighten up your house, even if you decide not to sell, fix it up for you! People always say their house looks better getting it ready to sell than while they lived there. Stop doing that to yourself, enjoy your house while you live in it.

Let’s get in there and do some Gardening. Its Florida, after all, and we do have some beautiful weather. That’s why there are 1,000 people a day moving into our state. Shovel any snow lately, nope! People want to spend time outside, enjoy a nice shade patio to relax and BBQ. I do this myself, working so much you forget why you live here.. I go East to show beach front property and say to myself “the beach is beautiful I need to come over her more often”. Get out of the house, go to a park, Hollywood has restaurants and live music, take the time to enjoy what Florida has to offer and its FREE, my favorite work.

Who’s made that New year commitment to Be Better, Do Better, Live a better Life? Well, me for one, so let’s do it together!

If you have any questions about getting a Mortgage, Need a referral for a Handyman, Are you still Up Side Down on your Mortgage and have some questions .. Call me, I’m here of you.

Well, another year has come and gone.  I don’t know about you, but the last couple of months in 2018 was very exciting for us!  It was due to the fact we had a new venue for the LIGHTING OF THE LIGHTS.  We all believed it would be a better place to hold this event and you, our neighbors, proved us right.

A special thanks go to Riki Frankel (our theme master), Joyce MacDonald and Lynne Grubb for all the wonderful decorations and for the costume designs.  It made it such a “magic” night. Also thanks to all the ladies who organized the drinks (Fran Smyth and Connie Falzone-Tarrant), Cookies (Diane Bossle),  and Pop Corn (Victoria McCann) and all their team.

Thank you to Shannon L o s i a n d L i n d a L e e Granger for the “Toys for Tots” Tent…and thank you to all who contributed toys … they are appreciated.T h e c l u b w a n t s t o personally thank our own resident   professional e n t e r t a i n e r , S T E V E HIGGINS, tenor, song stylist and singer.  He really brought the night to

life!  Thank you so much, Steve. Keep him in mind for your next event.

This was a FRWC produced and hosted event on behalf of the FRMHOA and all our club ladies did a GREAT job making the night so special. And

speaking of special…a huge THANKS goes out to, of course, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, for really making the night so special.

This is an annual event, so make sure you mark it down on your calendar for next year. It is a great way to start off the holiday.  We thank the HOA for allowing us to be part of this special night.

Of course, the year would not be complete without our Annual House Decorating Awards.  As of now, I have no idea who the winner is, as we go to press about a week before the judging.  The winners will be announced in the next issue.  However, as of now, just looking around the neighborhood, 2 1/2 weeks before Christmas, I know the judging will be harder than ever.  Forest Ridge LOOKS wonderful!!!!

As the new year approaches, I must once again thank all the ladies in the FRWC for making me sooooo glad we moved here.  You are very special to me.  As I have said many times, this IS the best club to belong to!!

If you wish to be part of the fun, just let me or any member know.  We meet the last Tuesday of every m o n t h , w i t h a f e w exceptions.  You can email me, Beverly Payne, at [email protected] enjoy the New Year!!

P h o t o o n r i g h t member Cecy Wright with Santa!….
