Crime Lab Science Kit: Children investigate

a crime scene mystery; they find evidence,

meet suspects, and investigate the evidence to

come up with their own explanations of what

happened—just like real forensic scientists do.

Mystery Detectives Kit: Children explore

mysteries around a bike crash, a missing

painting, a missing diamond, and money

missing from a zoo. They make observations

about the evidence and then use the evidence

to make inferences about what they think may

have happened. (Not pictured.)

Sunshine Science Kit Children discover visible and invisible parts of sunlight

by doing investigations right outside their door. Through

engaging group activities, they detect infrared light, see the

rainbow of colors that makes up visible light, and detect

ultraviolet light with UV-sensitive paper and “UV beads.”

Children also learn that we can protect ourselves from the

harmful effects of too much of the sun’s ultraviolet light

and they investigate which materials best protect us from

ultraviolet light.

the 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award for

Supplemental Resources: Science!

AEP’s Distinguished Achievement Awards—among

educational publishing’s most prestigious traditions—

recognize the best educational resources within the

categories of Curriculum, Periodicals, Professional

Development, and Supplemental Resources. Entries were

judged on the content, pedagogy, and age-appropriateness of the materials. The Fresh

Water kit focuses on environmental science and learning how to take better care of the

earth using hands-on cooperative activities that are fun for both leaders and children.

The activities are aligned with the National Science Education Standards and are not

only engaging but teach students how to investigate the way scientists do.
