Forensic Outreach has long been a dynamic and active part of the science curriculum in classrooms throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.

Originally conceived to introduce forensic science as an integrative, cross-disciplinary approach to science education, it has lept above and beyond this initial purpose.

What do you provide?We provide a range of in-school science (mostly forensic) enrichment events for students, teachers and interested adults.

How will this enrich my classroom?First, there are simply no other outreach programmes developed specific science curricula in mind. Second, these events are designed to improve a number of integral classroom skills (see p. 10).

How do I book?We have a booking system on our website (www.forensicoutreach.com). Check our calendar, and use the form to reserve a date. We’ll confirm it in due course and send you a “tailoring your programme” form.

Do you provide custom programmes?Yes. We are happy to help your school develop an event that meets your needs. Contact us to find out how we can help.

What about museum visits + tours?We are able to provide museum tours to some of the UK’s more unusual destinations. These can be booked separately or with another programme (see p.10).

I’m only interested in a one-off lecture.Many schools book lectures for STEM clubs or assemblies. A full list can be found in our single lectures list (see p. 7).

Do you offer anything for adults or teachers?We offer an adult CSI Masterclass and INSET courses for teachers (see p. 8).

Do you offer these programmes overseas?Yes, we do. However, overseas travel is at present subject to additional expenses incurred by travel. Contact us for a quick quotation.

How can you supplement my GCSE, A-Level or IB curriculum?All of our programmes are adjusted to supplement classroom teaching for the GCSE, A-Level, and International Baccalaureate* curricula. Contact us for more information regarding how we can help you enrich your curriculum.

This programme consists of a series of 6 engaging lessons + practical sessions, usually administered after-school. Each lecture explores a different

facet of forensic science.

The session run for about 1 hour and 15 minutes and are split into two parts: tutoring and the practical. Instructional time is approximately 25-30 minutes and the practical runs for the rest of the length of the session.

The standard series includes: Adventures in CSI: An Introduction; Death + Decomposition; Forensic Anthropology; Fingerprinting; Forensic Ecology; and

one session of your choice.

Is it a murder or a suicide and whodunnit? Students become expert forensic scientists in this new and

improved day-long event, which is now intended for more advanced students (for a Primary School version of

this event, see Forensic Field Day on page 4).

The day begins with a case briefing before students begin their foray into fingerprinting techniques, forensic

pathology, forensic toxicology, and genotyping.

Topics are taught individually and are followed up with a practical relating to the case. Students are challenged to weave together their conclusions and declare the cause

of death.

✴ Relevant equipment includes all evidence; forensic suits, masks and gloves; crime scene tape; a body bag; and handbooks or guidebooks required for practicals. Schools are provided a full equipment list ahead of time.

The famous mock-murder inquiry comes to your school in this two-day event. The Head Teacher is missing! Police presume foul play, three schoolteachers are suspects and your in-school investigation begins.

There’s a quick start to day 1 as students learn how to conduct a formal police investigation from a police

officer. We locate the “body” and specialised forensic training is given in evidence examination, forensic

ecology, fingerprinting and grave excavation.

Students must then collaborate to conduct their own forensic analyses and compose an expert witness

report.

On day 2, students travel to UCL, where they receive a University study and careers talk with a campus tour. The day concludes with a trial in a mock court room, where students are grilled by real barristers to see if

their evidence proves our suspect guilty.

Challenge your students to use scientific analysis and lateral thinking to solve a paradoxical murder mystery by the day’s end. From the time the case files are distributed to each investigator, this one-day

event is a stimulating and exciting experience.

A quick debriefing precedes a series of workshops on various topics in forensic science, including: forensic anthropology, which involves

the handling and examination of real human bones; forensic ecology, fingerprinting and forensic art (or the art of suspect sketching).

Practicals allow the students the students to unravel the clues hidden in the evidence through forensic analysis. As the day progresses,

students must piece these together to determine the cause of death and the suspect responsible.

For our youngest students, this programme invites children to investigate the disappearance of a jar of cookies from the school cafeteria. A police officer

initiates the mystery. Children are introduced to the case, all simplified to suit a younger audience.

One room is a crime scene, and includes planted evidence and clues for the children to gather. The class is

divided into five groups, which must work through a series of critical thinking puzzles with a forensic theme.

Join us for footprint and fingerprint “analysis”; matching and memory games; sketching and coloring the “crime

scene”; as well as searching for clues at the scene.

At the end of the day, the finished groups receive a puzzle piece. The class puts the puzzle pieces together to reveal the suspect that has taken the cookie. A plate of cookies

is provided to end the session!

Forensic science is an extensive field, and it would be impossible to encompass all of its areas in one programme. We’ve developed these sessions for an in-depth

look at a number of forensic sub-disciplines. These can be booked individually or as part of our six-session CSI masterclass (1 hour and 15 minutes each). Each has a

practical component.

Our single lectures.

Adventures in CSI A riveting introduction to forensic science and the daily life of a forensic scientist. Learn how to conduct an investigation alongside police, venture into the crime scene, and head to court to testify as an expert.

Death + Decomposition The impact of grief and bereavement on forensic investigations, managing PTSD, and a discussion of cultural attitudes to death and the science of decomposition.

Forensic Anthropology Get down to the bare bones of grave excavation and the principles of forensic anthropology. Review types of bones, their composition, and the distinguishing features that can be used to identify a missing person.

Careers in Forensic Science Explore an array of diverse careers in forensic science. Here we quickly review field work in entomology, palyonology, psychology, anthropology and others.

Fingerprinting Learn to apply one of the oldest methods of forensic examination. Find the arch, loop and whorl on your own fingers before identifying ridge details and trying three methods of lifting fingerprints.

Forensic Ecology An intriguing look at the ways in which ecology aids forensic investigation. Discover how forensic scientists use larvae development and vegetation as proxy indicators to determine the time and cause of death.

Forensic Entomology Get a glimpse of the medicocriminal applications of entomology and how insects can provide invaluable information about the post-mortem interval, the site of death and cause of death.

Forensic Art Inspired by a 2010 exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, this session combines the use of mass spectrometry and art history to shed light on fake or altered Grand Master paintings.

Criminal Psychology Dive inside the minds of forensic investigators, criminals and victims in this fascinating session. Debate how useful psychology is in a forensic context before trying to unravel your own psychological mystery.

The Body Farm Travel to one of three Body Farms world-wide for a glimpse of what most never see! Take a look inside one of the most macabre and amazing laboratories in the world.

Forensic Pathology Here we cover the body as the most vital piece of evidence, review why post-mortems are required, and how the cause of death is classified - from a suicide to a homicide.

Ballistics Learn the physics of a speeding bullet and what mysteries it can unearth about the crime committed.

2.15 pm Organising your own forensic experiences• From mock murders to creating a crime scene, this session deals with both beginner’s

and advanced exercises for all skill levels. Be inspired by new ideas for lessons, exercises and field trips for the new GCSE and A-Level science subjects.

2.40 pm Crime Scene Examination• Once your crime scene is set, how must it be examined? Take a look at

the practicalities of CSI including search techniques, evidence packaging, and how to preserve and record your scene. Set-up a realistic crime scene that will challenge your student investigators!

In response to the growing demand for forensic activities in the classroom as well as the GCSE in Applied Science, we’re offering a comprehensive one-day INSET class to equip

teachers with new ideas and classroom activities.

We’ve developed special excursion events that focus on either forensic science or medicine. These are tours can

be customised to integrate classroom curriculum to ensure your students receive as much benefit from the

Furthermore, we’ve formed active relationships with some of London’s lesser-known but equally fascinating

haunts to provide our schools with a riveting and memorable experience.

We offer a museum excursion and a University study and careers lecture as part of our Operation: Your
