The CGSA and the Golf Industry in Canada have worked for wellover a decade to educate golf course superintendents on the judi-cious use of pesticides in the management of turfgrass. In fact,Canada was the first country to introduce Environmental Guide-

lines for Golf Courses and has been referenced in the Environ-mental Principles for Golf Courses in the United States and AnEnvironmental Strategy for Golf in Europe . [ ... ] In 2001, theCGSA developed the Environmental Management Resource Man-ual for golf. This guideline was distributed to all of our membersand was recognized by both the Golf Course Superintendents As-sociation of America and the Brit ish International Golf Green-keepers Association as a key resource in the area of golf coursemanagement.

The motivation for these and many other initiatives is both eco-nomic and environmental. Besides the fact that pesticides require asignificant expenditure, the current PATCHWORK of municipal bylaws restricting the use of pesticides creates a situation that has the

potential to be confusing for the superintendents, the Golf Industry,and the public. It could also serve to drive golfers out of one com-munity to an adjacent municipality to find the PLAYING CONDITIONSthey seek.

C.G.S.A. is worried aboutUNEVEN playing conditions in different ju-risdictions that create apatchwork of prohibition legislation. Inanother part of the letter, C.G.S.A. claims that playing surfacesthat are necessary to the game and to the business of golf.

The Golf Industry has been ridiculously inconsistent in defining suitable playing surfaces . In the absence of suitable orquality playing surfaces, C.G.S.A. argues that the Golf Indus-try will face aresulting economic hardship and will drive golf-

ers out. The Golf Industry is already doing this well on its own.

Sadly, the Golf Industry has embarked on a LUDICROUS AND ILLFATED campaign to DOWNGRADE THE PLAYING CONDITIONS ostensi-bly, C.G.S.A. claims the Golf Industry around the globe has em-barked on an effort to reduce the expectations of the golfer.

The Golf Industry must MEET the expectations of its paying golfingcustomers by developing and publishing golf MAINTENANCE PROTO-COLS and PERFORMANCE STANDARDS that are EXPECTED by its playing

customers. So far, the Golf Industry has been ridiculously incon-sistent in defining suitable playing surfaces. If it does not doso, laypeople such as the EnviroManiacActivists will step in anddesign these standards and protocols for the industry. Even moreridiculous ...
