P R E F A C E .

Our F L O R A L H A N D BOOK has been received with un-expected favor during the past year, its annual circu-lation largely increasing, and although over sixteen and one half millions have been distributed in the United States alone, the call for Books has been unparalleled, and the Hand Book has become a standard work. We have not copied the works on Flowers usually sold in this country, no two being alike, but have taken the best Ger-man authorities. We add to our list every year, and can guarantee that the present revised edition is the most complete and perfect vocabulary of the Language of Flowers ever published.

Flowers from the earliest ages have been associated with the tender sentiments of the heart, and thus have often been the means of telling the tale which word dare not speak. They, too, have been a source of poetic inspiration, and poesy of all ages has found images of joy and beauty

V^P " In the bright consummate flower." We insert, as usual, throughout this little book, newr

and varied gems of song, which we have culled from the standard poets, to please and instruct our readers.

" Flowers are the brightest things which earth On her broad bosom loves to cherish ; Gay they appear as children's mirth, ' ¿ ike fading dreams of hope they perish. By them the lover tells his tale ; 'They can his hopes, his fears express ; The maid, when looks or work would fail. Can thus a kind return confess. Then, lady, let the wreath we bring For thee a wreath of beauty twine. And as the blossoms deck the spring, So every tender wrish be thine."

The greatest reputation is often only an embarrassment. To

I s SUPERIOR TO ALL A X I M A L O l L S IX THE FOLLOWIXG PARTICULARS:

I t is a cooling Vegetable Oil,— Animal Oils are heating.

It has great penetrating affinity for the human skin,— Animal Oils, as bear's grease, have little or none.

Its rapid absorption leaves little residue on the surface,— Animal Oils do not possess this peculiarity in

any great degree. It does not quickly become rancid,—

Animal Oils do. It imparts glossiness by its penetrating power, rather

than by outward lustre,— The contrary is true with regard to Animal Oils.

P R E M A T U R E L O S S O F T H E H A I R , which is so common nowadays, may be entirely prevented by the use of

B U R N E T T ' S COCOAENE. It has been used in thousands of cases where the hair

was coming out in handfuls, and has never failed to arrest its decay, and to promote a healthly and vigorous growth. I t is at the same time unrivalled as a dressing for the hair. A single application will render it soft and glossy for several days.

CLEAR COMPLEXION. It may seem quite unnecessary that in these days any

allusion should be made to the intimate reciprocal rela-tions of health and a pure state of the skin. If the skin be flabby or inactive, and if its pores are stopped, an acridity and corruption of our blood will be the unavoid-able consequence. Pimples, blackheads, and other dis-gusting sores appear, for which people dose themselves with sarsaparilla, and other so called Spring medicines or blood purifiers, purging in effect, which, while for a time seem to have the desired effect, weaken the system, produce piles, and frequently ends the life of the patient, while the skin, with its thousands of pores, which should act as the natural drain is neglected.

B U R N E T T ' S K A L L I S T O N is not a potion producing that deadly whiteness which should be so dreaded, showing the results of lead poison-ing ; but a healthful and harmless wash for the skin, keeping the pores clean, and reaching where soap and water will not. I t is strongly recommended by the faculty wherever known, and produces a delightfully soft and fresh skin, which health alone can induce.

In connection with Burnett 's Cocoaine for the hair, it is unequalled as a wash for the head.

Ladies will find Burnett 's Kalliston most fragrant and refreshing, keeping the skin soft, and counteracting the evil effects of those soaps perfumed by cheap and dele-terious oils, and made from refuse fat and grease, which are daily forced upon the public.

The invalid confined to the house will find nothing so delightful and refreshing as

B U R N E T T ' S K A L L I S T O N .

Begin and end with God.

BURNETT'S COCOAINE, For promoting the growth of and

BEAUTIFYING- THE H A I B , rendering it dark and glossy, holds, in a liquid form, a large proportion of deodorized

C O C O A - N U T O I L , prepared expressly for this purpose.

The inventors of Cocoaine, knowing that Animal Oils—Bear's Grease, Pomades, etc—induce heat rather than alleviate it, turned their attention and pharma-ceutical science towards Vegetable Oils as the basis of a medicament to promote the growth and preserve the beauty of the hair.

Many persons abuse this delicate and beautiful orna-ment by burning it with alcoholic washes and plastering it with grease, which has no affinity for the skin, and is not absorbed. Burnett's Cocoaine, a compound of Cocoa-Nut Oil, etc., is unrivalled as a dressing for the hair, is readily absorbed, and is peculiarly adapted to its various conditions. [Extracts from authentic writings in regard to Cocoa-

Nut Oil.'] " The use of this oil as a cosmetic has been universal

among all the people of India for centuries. No other preparation of art could give that elegant suppleness of limb, that glowing smoothness of skin, and luxuriance and abundance of hair, which have so often been the admiration of travellers in those remote and interesting regions."—Selected.

Marsden, speaking of the people of Sumatra, says: "The i r hair is strong, and of a shining black, the im-provement of both which qualities it probably owes in a great measure to the constant use of Cocoa-Nut Oil." —Marsden, p. 40.

BURNETT'S COCOAINE Is an i r valuable remedy for

L O S S OF HAIR. P H I L A D E L P H I A , April 16 ,1877 . Gentlemen,—One year ago my hair commenced falling out, until I was almost bald. After using your Cocoaine for a few months I have a thick growth of new hair. ALEXANDER HENRY,

814 East Girard Avenue. L I N D A L L H O T E L , St. Louis, Dec. 1 , 1880 . Gentlemen,—I wish to thank you for the good your Cocoaine has done me,—not only was my hair dropping out, but an intolerable itching nearly drove me crazy. The different advertised mediums I was persuaded to try did me no good. When I first tried the Cocoaine the effect was immediate, and up to the present lasting.

Yours, JOHN STABLER. NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 1878.

Mr. J O S E P H B U R N E T T , Boston, Mass.: Dear Sir,—Your Cocoaine is the only dressing for the hair used m our family for the past fifteen (15) years. I t has stopped my hair from coming out repeatedly, and now, though nearly fifty years of age, I have not a single gray hair. Mrs. J . E. COLLINS.

Messrs. J O S E P H B U R N E T T & Co., Boston: Gents,—Your agent in this city, on hearing of my case, and my utter unbelief in all hair preparations, sent me a bottle of Cocoaine, begging me to give it a fair trial. I had lost all my hair in a malarial fever some three years before, and was obliged to wear a wig. Nearly seven months ago I began using the Cocoaine, and now have between two and three inches of as fine, sturdy hair as I ever saw. I think the Cocoaine is wonderful, and I have brought it many customers.

I. P. The following communication from a highly esteemed

citizen of Boston comes to us unsolicited, and he desires to make known the fact of his discovery for the benefit of others similarly afflicted.

BOSTON-, M A S S . Messrs. J O S E P H B U R N E T T & Co.: Gentlemen,—You may not be aware of the fact that your Kalliston affords relief in that most distressing complaint called Itching Piles. I made the discovery some weeks ago, during a night of intense discomfort and suffering, by simply applying Kalliston, a bottle of which happened to be on my dressing table. The effect seemed to me magical; the itching ceased almost instantly, and I have had no recurrence. I felt it to be my duty to make this statement to you, hoping that thereby other sufferers may be relieved. Very truly, your obliged and obedient servant, FRED. MILLS, 115 Congress Street. Since receiving the above, the proprietors of Kalliston

have endeavored fairly to test its value as a specific for Itching Piles, having caused it to be used in many aggra-vated cases, and m every instance it has given instant relief.

The following letter will prove interesting to those who suffer from this disagreeable disease:

J A N U A R Y 29 , 1880. J O S E P H B U R N E T T & Co., Boston: I have had the Itching Piles off and on ever since the war. Sometimes I have suffered agony, and I tell you nobody knows what pain and misery is, unless they have had the Itching Piles. Somebody told me that your Kalliston would cure me. I got a bottle, and the very first time I used it the pain and itching was all gone in a few minutes, and I think I am cured, as I have not had any trouble from it for a fortnight. Another thing about the Kalliston, it is nice and clean, and easy to use. Yours truly, JOS. E. FOSTER, 18 Florence Street, Somerville.

TO HOUSEKEEPERS. Owing to the increased and constantly increasing de-

mand for Vanilla Beans, used in the manufacture of Extract Vanilla, spurious compounds are being thrown upon the market, purporting to be Pure Vanilla, but pre-pared principally from Tonka Beans.

The National Dispensatory says of Tonka Beans: "They " are usually covered with a crystalline efflorescence of "coumarin. Given to dogs in the dose of from seven " t o ten grains, this substance produced great and even " fatal depression; and in man in the dose of from thirty < l to sixty grains it occasioned nausea, giddiness, depres-" sion, vomiting and drowsiness." Many of the spurious compounds purporting to be pure Extract of Vanilla are prepared principally from Tonka Beans.

Housekeepers who study their interests will demand of their grocer Burnett's Pure Vanilla only, and refuse to accept of an adulterated compound, which may render the dealer a better profit.

BURNETTS EXTRACT OF VANILLA is prepared from selected Vanilla Beans, and is warranted entirely free from Tonka or other deleterious substances.

All Cooking Extracts, such as Lemon, Vanilla, Rose, Almond, Celery, etc., prepared at the laboratory of Joseph Burnett & Co., Boston, can be relied upon for purity and strength. For upwards of thirty years they have been used by the leading hotels and the best families through-out the United States, and are sold by all first-class grocers and druggists.

Gentlemen,—I cheerfully bear testimony to the virtues of your valuable Cocoaine for the hair, having, by experi-ence, tested its efficacy when almost totally bald, and after using it for about three months I found a new growth of hair springing up, which gradually developed into a thick growth as luxuriant as I formerly possessed. I have used the Cocoaine since 1873, and find it a pleasant hair dressing, leaving the hair soft and glossy, and would not do without it. RICHARD SALINGER,

Formerly Editor "Baltimore Wecker." Messrs. J O S E P H B U R N E T T & Co., Boston, Mass.:

Gentlemen,—I wTish to say a word or two in regard to your Cocoaine for the hair. My wife has used the Cocoaine over twenty (20) years; two or three times she has lost a a large part of her hair (from sickness), and each time it was restored to its fu l l quantity and beauty by a liberal use of your Cocoaine only, and to-day not one in a thousand has such magnificent hair as she has, I believe entirely from its use. I regard it as the best hair prepara-tion in use. Yery truly yours,

«

NEW YORK SUPERIOR COURT. A T THE S P E C I A L T E R M , April, 1851). PIERREPONT, Justice. The following decision was given: " It appeared before me, upon the trial of this cause, that the plaintiff in November, 1856, compounded, from Cocoa-nut Oil and other ingredients, a mixture to be used upon the human hair; that he devised a name never before used, by which to mark his said compound, to wit: the name or word 'Cocoaine' ; that he forthwith published in all his circulars, and in all the principal newspapers of the country, and especially in the city of New York, where the defendants reside, that he had adopted the above-mentioned name or title as a 1 Trade-Mark,' to secure the public and the proprietors against imposition, and that all unauthorized use of this trade-mark would be prosecuted.

" About two years after the first introduction of this article by the plaintiffs, the defendants, residents of the city of New York, commenced the sale of a somewhat similar preparation put up in bottles not unlike those of the plaintiff's. "•The proof is clear that the plaintiff had, for nearly two years, advertised his mixture in nearly every news-paper in this city, and had published in the same papers that he had adopted the word 4 Cocoaine' as his Trade-Mark. The defendant was himself a witness, and he did not suggest that these notices had not been brought home to his knowledge; the conclusion is irresistible, that he was aware of their publication, and he intentionally adopted 4 Cocoine' as a close imitation of 4Cocoaine ' and for the purpose of deriving profit from the simulated trade-mark. 4 4 The plaintiff is entitled to judgment, and an injunc-tion must issue."

NEW YORK COURT OF APPEALS. At the July Term, 1867, D A V I E S , Chief Justice, the fol-lowing FINAL decision was given : Upon the facts found by the Court, the right of the plaintiffs to the relief granted is clear. The plaintiffs have adopted, appropriated, and used a certain trade-mark. This has become their property ; and for its pro-tection the plaintiffs are entitled to invoke the aid of courts of justice. We have the ascertained fact that the defendants are using a spurious imitation of the plain-tiff's trade-mark. This they cannot be permitted to do. 4 4 The Judgment of the Superior Court of New York was correct, and should be affirmed, with costs."
