"U" Depends Upon "You"! This is not double-talk. It is actually a condensed state

ment of fact and of great importance. It means that the namechange for Marshall from "College" to "University" is within reach and can become a reality soon if you and other Marshall Alumni will give it active support.

The West Virginia Board of Education set the stage last October when it passed the resolution on to the West Virginia Legislature for its 1961 Session to consider Marshall for this name-change. Now the decision rests solely with Legislature when it convenes January 11.

If ever Marshall Alumni had any one thing to give them the incentive to really rally behind their Alma Mater, this is it! Alumni living in West Virginia should immediately contact their Delegates and Senators and urge that they give this Bill their full support when it comes to vote. Alumni should make every effort to see their Legislators personally, or, as second choice, by telephone, or, at least by letter. Better yet would be to do all three. Encouraging relatives and neighbors to do the same would also be helpful.

Alumni living out of West Virginia can help by writing friends and relatives living in West Virginia to encourage them to support this in the ways mentioned above.

West Virginia Legislators want to do what their constituents request, so they welcome these contacts as means to determine just what they should or should not support.

Remember: Marshall has already reached the complexity and educational eminence that clearly takes it out of the college class as an institution of higher education. It is a multi-purpose institution with four colleges and a large division of adult education. Marshall has no aspirations for medical, dental and law schools but merely universityrecognition for its current program and purposes.

Already there are 111 public and private universities throughout the United States that have less departments, less course-offering and smaller enrollment than Marshall. Twenty States have smaller state universities in addition to their chief state university. In fact, in the past four years 11 state colleges have been named universities. These eleven universities followed the same pattern of growth and development as Marshall.

This name-change would help: present and future Marshall graduates compete for jobs with graduates of similar - type institutions already named universities; attract people and industry to this state; make it easier to secure and hold faculty; make it easier to get research and other grants from foundations and government; and give Marshall and the state a boost in morale as well as helping improve educational opportunities.

As \\'e stated above, Marshall "U" d e p e n d s upon "You"!

May 1961 Reunion Plans Underway Members of the classes of 1901, 1906, 1911, 1916,

1921, 1926, 1931, 1936, 1941, 1946 and 1951 are urged to contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs regarding their interest in the reunion meetings of their respective classes for next May 27. If any member has not received the initial reunion-letter and class address-list, these may be obtained through the same office by request.

The College and Alumni Association are expecting the largest number of reunion - classes in Marshall's history at the May 27 event. Planning for the various reunionclasses should start immediately. The Classes of 1911 and 1936 will be featured on their fiftieth and twenty-fifth reunions respectively.

Mason County Takes Lead By fig, ures tabulated through December 17, 1960, Mason

County is leading all ch a p t e r areas in participation in the Second Annual-Giving Program. This Chapter ranks highest in number of gifts and percentage of participation, with 17 in the former category and 12% in the latter. Charleston and Logan County follow in number gifts with 15 and 14 respectively, but have percentages of only 2.5 and 4 respectively. The latest tabulations will be published in our next publication in February.

Second Year Annual-Giving Ahead of Last Year

A favorable trend seems to be indicated in the Second Year Annual-Giving Program thus far and if it continues, the 4.4% participation of last year's Program will certainly be surpassed. However, your Alumni Board and College officials are striving to at least double last year 's results. which amounted to 442 actual gifts for a total of $4,442.60.

By December 17, 1960, 319 gifts had been received for a total of $3,489.19 and an average gift of $10.93. On December 17, 1969, only 262 gifts had been received for a total of $2,-297.00. In last year's Program, the 319th gift was not received until February 2, 1960 and then the total was $2,892.00 for an average gift of $9.06.

The above facts and comparisons are being given only to show that there is definite improvement in our Second year of Annual-Giving over the First year. It also helps emphasize that there is much room for improvement, especially when it is considered that there are over 11,700 Marshal! Alumni being contacted. Already many repeat gifts have been received from last year's participants and many "first-time" participants have been recorded thus far.

The Annual - Giving Program extends to June 30, 1961, but it is sincerely hoped that each Alumnus will participate as soon as possible (if not already). This is the only official way that we can identify an Alumnus as "active". It is simply a matter of determining one's financial capabilities and then giving to the Alma Mater the amount you want to give based upon what you can give.

Nine Chapters Have Already Formed Early in October an intensified program of form~ng

Alumni Chapters was launched and by December 16, nme chapters had officially been organized. Six of these have received charters.

The Logan County (W. Va.) Chapter was the first Chapter to elect officers and adopt by-laws under the fulltime Alumni Program started in July 1959. South Charleston was the first chapter to receive its charter, while the Central Ohio Chapter (Columbus-area) was the first out-of-state Chapter to be organized and chartered. In fact, the Central Ohio organization is the only official out-of-state chapter to date.

Logan County, Mason County, Wood County - area, Charleston, South Charleston and Central Ohio Chapters have officers, by-laws and. have received their charte~s. Chapters, having elected officers and adopted by-laws, will be chartered January 5 (St. Albans); January 9 (Mingo County); and January 24 (Jack, son County). President Smith will speak at each of these meetings as he has in five previous ones.

Preliminary organizational planning has been started by Nitro-Dunbar and Boone County. Any other areas wishing to organize may receive full details by contacting the Alumni and Development Office. Efforts will eventually be made to organize chapters in all areas where there is a concentration of interested Alumni.

The basic purposes for chapters include: keeping up-todate address lists, encouraging maximum legislative support, gaining participation in the Annual Giving program, promotng Marshall academically and athletically among high school seniors; and ensuring more publicity about Marshall in the chapter area.

'60 Grid Season Showed Improvement The 1960 Football Season saw Coach Charley Snyder's

second chapter at the helm of Marshall's grid fortunes end on an encouraging note. The team in this past season showed great improvement as it posted a record of two wins, one tie and seven defeats as compared to 1959's one win and eight losses.

The most favorable note is the fact that only four members of the varsity squad are lost by graduation (Jarrett, Mayfield, Lowe and Lathan shown on the cover with Charley). With many returning varsity veterans and several outstanding performers coming up from a strong freshman squad, next season should show even further improvement. But remember Marshall is two or three years from reaching a stature of strong contention in the Mid-American Conference.

The final record for the 1960 season follows with the 1959 score in parenthesis for improvement comparison purposes. We defeated Toledo 14-0 (20-13) and Eastern Kentucky 13-0 (didn't play in '59). We tied Delaware 6-6 (lost 30-6). We were defeated by Wittenberg 3-0 (didn't play in '59), Bowling Green 14-7(1ost 51-7), Kentucky 55-0 (didn't play in '59), Kent State 22-6 (lost 46-7), Louisville 7-0 (lost 48-6), Ohio U. 19-0 (lost 21-14), and Western Michigan 34-12 (lost 52-0).

The Freshman squad won one and lost three in their 1960 efforts. They defeated the Marietta College Jayvees and lost to the frosh of Cincinnati, Xavier and Ohio U.

The 1961 Varsity Football Schedule follows: Sept. 16-VMI (site not determined yet); Sept. 23-Bowling Green, here; Sept. 30-Louisville, away; Oct. 7-Toledo, away; Oct. 14--Kent State, home; Oct. 21- Morehead, Homecoming; Oct. 28-Ohio U.,' home; Nov. 11-Xavier, away; and Nov. 18-Eastern Kentucky, at Ashland, Kentucky.

1960-61 Varsity Squad: Front Row - L to R: Lambert, Layman, Mott, Gordon, Feola. Second Row - L to R: Moore, Gallion, Morrison, Griffin, Roberts, T. Williams, Moody. Third Row - L to R: Freshman Coach Allen, Coach Rivlin, Asst. Coach Josephs. Back Row - L to R: Pugh, Tucker, Corter, Burgess, Wildt, L. Will iams, Syden

stricker, Slater.

'60-'61 Cage Season Link To Bright Future The 1960-61 Big Green basketball squad conta'iifs great

promise and probably represents a contender for Marshall for the 1961-62 season. Coach Jule Rivlin is confronted with a sophomore-laden squad that needs this season to develop. It is possible, however, that they will "jell" later this season and give a high-ranking account of themselves in MidAmerican Conference standings.

The 1960-61 schedule follows: _ Dec. S Marietta (78-59) Jan. 28 Bowlln1r Green Dec. 6 At Eastern Ken.
