Map current practices of the industry by collecting input from F&L membersand experts in logistics data management.
Determine constraints and limitations for shippers, LSP and ASP (Application Service Providers) and explore possibilities for overcoming these.
Provide an outlook for the next 3-5 years, focusing on system connectivity between the various partners.

LEARNINGS (1)
Multiple information layers (Driver, Carrier, 3PL / 4 PL, ASP, Platforms, Sites, Customer etc.)
Data Management in Logistics- is rather an organizational challenge than a technical one- requires a Clear Business Process and joint understanding between parties.
The “information” is available - the challenge however is to get (just) the requested set of datain the right moment, in the right formatto the right place (person/system)without manual interventions!

Takeaways: Four completely different solutions, none unique. They do not compete nor cooperate, but have some overlap.
Telematics
1. Track the product, not the trailer.2. Bluetooth instead of RFID.3. Rather a “last mile” solution, for high value / sensitive cargo.
Platform (Generalist)
1. Trend for smaller, individual solutions, which may include LTL and other modes.2. Develop relationships with carrier and shipper and try to enhance value for both to optimize process.

Standards:1. Global reach and advanced. Core industries FMCG and Pharmaceutical. 2. There are 3 Elements of a „Common Language“a) Technical Language (e.g. XML) HOW do we talkb) Semantic Language (standard processes) WHAT do we talk ABOUTc) Identification Numbers a COMMON VOCABULARY
Converters/Translators: 1. Not even “standards” are “standard”2. Someone has to do the translation (customer, platform or service provider)3. Which information do the parties REALLY need? A lot of waste (2 GB messages to provide 16MB information) which cause pressure on networks (internal and infrastructure)

Presentations helped to understand the issue from a strategic perspective.
There is not one solution, nor do we expect that there will be ever a unique “one size fits all” solution.
Everyone working with own legacy systems (which have no standardised format) AND there are various modal platforms.
Standards exist for data objects and logistics objects but not for the process; each of us must better understand what we're dealing with internally and how to work with external parties to select one of the multitude of solutions out there.
You have to start yourself, with your own database (own ERP, own process…). Achievement potential depends on what level a person/company is at.
Recommendations:
The most effective way to remove complexity is to replace old systems with a company wide ERP system including logistics, and use this replacement as a leverage to introduce best practices for data harmonisation.
A second best option would be to introduce a central master data management system for harmonised data, which will hugely simplify the data exchange to the supply chain partners because this can act as a single hub between all non-harmonised internal systems and the outside world.

Shippers: If you choose a web-platform for any transactional process,make sure that the process is clear and consistent and check usability/connectivity/costs for the users (LSPs &
Carriers!)
LSPs: You need to understand the transactional processand offer 100 % connectivity to “any” system in “any” format.
Platforms: Ensure user-friendly interface/connections and technical supportto ALL users! (to both those who wish to receive information and those who have
to provide information)
ALL: It’s up to YOU to make a difference and trigger changeStart with your own, internal ERP system!
