2 HELPING KIDS REDISCOVER THEIR CHILDHOOD WHILE WE DISCOVER A CURE FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER.

KORIE BECHER CHARNICEKorie is a five-year-old battling Medulloblastoma. When we talked to Korie’s mom, Jenny, she said Korie would love to do her Bear Hug in Chicago at the American Girl Store.

We are grateful for our partnership with The Langham Chicago, The American Girl Store, and Sugar Factory River North who helped to make this a special experience for Korie and her family! After her Bear Hug, Korie’s mom shared with us: “Everything was absolutely amazing. We had a blast.”

Becher is a nine-year-old boy who was referred to Bear Necessities while battling Leukemia. Becher asked for a gift card to the PGA store. We were able to work with the PGA Store to help personalize Becher’s visit as they arranged a full day at the store for him. They helped to dress him like his favorite golfer, Jordan Spieth, arrange a private lesson for him, and provide him with his favorite lunch, Portillo’s!

“Thank you SOOO much for the Bear Hug! I had a very fun time. I loved the lessons from Jana, the LPGA professional. I have been using all of her tips! I can’t wait to go to Portillo’s and get my favorite meal of chicken tenders and fries! Also, thank you for setting this all up just for me. It was really special and amazing! I will never forget that day!

Charnice is a 16-year-old teenager who was referred to Bear Necessities while battling Osteosarcoma. When we asked Charnice what she would like for her Bear Hug, she asked for a shopping spree to some of her favorite stores and dinner with her family at The Cheesecake Factory.

After her Bear Hug, Charnice’s mom shared her very kind words with us: “We had the time of our lives at The Cheesecake Factory – thanks for your great efforts at Bear Necessities. We love you guys! I thank God for Foundations like this. Thank you so much for your support of our family.”

HELPING KIDS REDISCOVER THEIR CHILDHOOD WHILE WE DISCOVER A CURE FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER 3

Dear Friends,

Pediatric Cancer continues to rob our children of the childhood they so deserve. While many advancements have been made since the inception of Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation in 1993, it still remains the number one cause of death by disease in our children.

■ An estimated 300,000 children worldwide will be diagnosed with some form of pediatric cancer, that’s over 800 kids a day!

■ It’s not ONE disease, it’s made up of 12 major types of cancer and 100 subtypes.

■ 2/3 of all cancer patients will have long-term chronic conditions due to their treatment.

■ The number of diagnosed cases has continued to increase over the past 20 years.

■ Everyday 43 sets of parents will hear the words, “your child has cancer.”

■ And, despite these and many more statistics, only 4% of the annual budget from the National Cancer Institute supports pediatric cancer research.

We are beyond humbled by the numerous individuals and companies you will see the names of on the following pages. Your name very well may be amongst them. We can’t do the things we do for these children without your assistance and please know how much every single donation we receive is appreciated.

We hope the smiling faces of just a sampling of the children we have helped will warm your heart as you peruse the following pages. Know you truly have made an impact in their lives!

We want to thank each and every one of you for your financial support, volunteer support and for embracing our mission and Bear’s dream to help other kids just like him.

Our work is sadly far from done, I ask for your continued generosity so we can find the cure and bring hope and joy to these children until the words, “your child has cancer” no longer exists.

Warmest regards,

Kathleen

FROM THE CEO/FOUNDER

ANGELAngel was in treatment for Sarcoma when he was referred to Bear Necessities. For his Bear Hug Angel asked to ride in a yellow Lamborghini, go to Dylan’s Candy Bar and spend the evening with his family at “The Main Event.” With our great partnership with Perillo Auto Group Angel was able to do just this, take a ride in a YELLOW Lamborghini!

After their experience Angel’s mom, Edilia, wrote to us to express her words of gratitude. “After a great day Saturday, I stayed up late thinking about my son and his journey. I think about all the people that have been with us through this awful time of our lives and the support we have received and joy we have experienced through the kindness that has been showed to us. I want to thank you and Bear Necessities for a memorable, cherished day where Cancer was not on our minds only happiness, joy and laughter and a dream that came true. Thank you for a wonderful day my son will never forget. The smiles are rare and the happiness he felt lasted through the weekend. Thank you for the precious moment.”

In 2018-2019, the Young Professional’s Board, or YPB, included 50 incredibly talented and passionate individuals. Together, they raised nearly $166,000 to directly support the foundation’s mission.

The YPB enthusiastically hosted three service events for kids who had been touched by Bear Necessities. Two Creative Collaborations events were held at the Bear Necessities’ office where the kids had the opportunity to do an assortment of crafts. These crafts were later auctioned off at Purple Affair for

the Bear and Bear Tie Ball. The highlight of the service calendar year was the annual Bear’s Day Out, hosted at the Field Museum. The YPB was joined by nearly 100 patients and their families for a day of crafts, nail painting, games, and even a scavenger hunt through the museum!

The YPB also hosted three happy hour style fundraising events throughout the year at some of Chicago’s favorite bars. These events raised nearly $30,000 through ticket sales, sponsorships, bar specials, and Bear Hug auctions. While the

focus of these events was raising funds for Bear Necessities, they were also used to spread the word to the young professional community about all the work the Foundation does for pediatric cancer research.

The major fundraising event of the year for the YPB was their annual signature event, Purple Affair for the Bear, held in January 2019 at Theater on the Lake. With over 430 guests in attendance, Purple Affair for the Bear raised over $120,000 for Bear Necessities.

Along with major events, the YPB members took it upon themselves to raise money for Bear Necessities in a number of creative ways. These included work out classes, guest bartending events, events at work, bar crawls, school fundraising, and corporate matching. Altogether, the Young Professional’s Board had an incredibly successful year supporting Bear Necessities, the plans are to continue building on this positive momentum!

JORDANSweet six-year-old Jordan was referred to Bear Necessities while going through treatment for Leukemia ALL. Jordan’s mom, Erika, shared with us how much Jordan loved gymnastics. They had just signed him up for gymnastics classes where he loved jumping on the trampoline. Erika thought the perfect Bear Hug for Jordan would be his own personal trampoline in their backyard. Once the trampoline was installed, Erika shared this pictures with us and said, “Jordan is beyond excited!”

MEMORIALS

“The amount of gratitude I have can not be nearly expressed in words. My son Esai and his brother found everything to be absolutely amazing. At the Museum of Science and Industry they made sure everything would flow and shared the best way to venture into the museum so we maximized our day. They really enjoyed the Pixar exhibition almost as much as the baby chicks. When we arrived at the Kimpton Hotel his face lit up and they made his day with the little additions they placed in our room. The Sugar Factory was amazing and overwhelming, we have never been there but gracious it was mind blowing. The boys couldn’t figure out the rainbow burgers, lol, but Esai loved his kiddie cocktail. This experience gave our family a day to forget our day to day struggle with his illness and allowed us to focus on us and him as a whole. Sai hasn’t smile or laughed much since his diagnosis so hearing his giggles and excitement made my entire world light up, and I have you to thank and the hard work you put into my family’s happiness.” Esai’s Mom

PADDYPaddy is a two-year-old battling ALL Leukemia for the second time. When we talked to his mom, she said Paddy would love a new firetruck bunk bed to share with his big brother. Paddy and his brother loved their new bunk bed. Their mom Sarah helped to share their excitement with us afterwards.

“Thank you so much for your help in coordinating this Bear Hug. We assembled the bed this past weekend and the boys are PUMPED to have the bed. Our older one is telling everyone he meets about it!! Paddy was so happy and was shocked when Connor climbed the ladder to the bed above him. Thanks for helping to make this possible!”

Paddy received his Bear Hug in November, 2018 and was able to enjoy his bunk bed for 5 months until he lost his battle.
