President

March has been another extremely busy month at the Center and Museum. The word is getting out thanks to the tri-fold and rack card that advertises our Center, Museum, Library, and Park that are distributed throughout Brevard County. Over 15,000 have been distributed to date. Because the park is now our responsibility for renting and clean-up, we are becoming more known as a “large event's’” location. For example, on Mar 31 – Apr 2 the park will be the location for a Boy Scout Jamboree with 16 Scout troops setting up camp sites in the park. The number of field trips and the sizes of the groups are also increasing. We recently hosted a group of 100 second graders (with escorts) from Lewis Carroll school. The attendance in the museum continues to increase, and along

with that, the donations have significantly increased! I would like to thank Harry Beaver and the volunteers who supported the Veterans Memorial Center booth for three days at the TYCO War Birds Museum Air Show. It was an excellent opportunity to promote our Center and Museum. Several of us attended the presentation of “South Pacific” at the Surfside Playhouse in Cocoa Beach, not only to see an excellent performance, but to see how they used many of our excess/stored artifacts as props to add authenticity to the production. Don’t forget about the Mega Expo on March 29 at the Melbourne Auditorium and Fiesta Brevard on April 28 at Riverfront Park in Cocoa Village. Several members are selling tickets for this event and it should prove to be a major fundraiser for the Center.

The Library is taking on a new look with Tim Scott and Paul Julian leading the effort. They have weeded out the excess and non-relevant books and rearranged the library in a more logical sequence, centering on conflicts and the different military services. Well done!

Donn Weaver is continuing as our fundraising coordinator, but has also taken on a more defined role as our Special Projects Coordinator. In this role, Donn can assist the Chairman and President with different projects, including on-going efforts in the Veterans History project, Veterans Back to Class speaking engagements, liaison with the County and Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency for future park expansion, etc. Dean Schaaf / President

MOVING FORWARD — Making Expansion Even Better

The transformation of our Museum and Library as well as the creation of our new Park continues to get great reviews from the public and other veterans. Thanks to many new volunteers as well as those who have stuck with us for years, we can continue to improve well into 2017. We are still working — our “Make a Difference” campaign ($2,500 in donations and pledges in February) continues; We received $6000 from the BCSO thanks to last Fall’s “Jailbreak” fundraiser; we completed a video for a national USA Today Grant; and we started foundation grant applications and met with some major companies which may pay off in the future. All this will help us complete our plans, enhance support to veterans and give us options to create a better facility and offer more service to veterans and the community in the future.

Please help us continue to seek support for our programs through our special Memorial Day Ceremony on 29 May at 0900-1000 hours. That will make our campaign nearly two years old and even more successful. We have raised over $230,000 in funds and in kind services from more than 90 Organizations, Businesses and Individuals. Check out that great list on the Spotlight Page in this edition of the Courier. Also, look at the “Support Wall of Honor” in the Museum as we permanently recognize their generous support. Our Goal remains $300,000 which is reachable if we keep going. Contact any Board Member or Donn Weaver (321-613-2403) if you have any questions or can spare some time to help.

Chairman’s Report

The Korean War vets have done a great deal for us at the center and in the Plaza, including standing at storefronts to raise cash to pay for monuments and other things needed. As of March 30, they will no longer be doing MOD work as they richly deserve a rest. So when you see them around the center please thank them for all they did in support of our country and our center. We saw the Sea Cadets have a pass and review at the center along with The last Naval Battle of the American Revolution hold it annual ceremony. Lewis Carrol Elementary school came by the the center with 100 students and chaperones for about 5 hours. They toured the Museum, Plaza and Park.

Just a friendly reminder that elections are fast approaching and we would like to see some new members stand up and take positions as board of Directors for both the Council and Center. The Council continues to have new members join. The courier continues to look outstanding thanks to Doris’ work.

MuseumMore than 1700 visitors enjoyed the museum in February – an increase of 200 people over January! Not included in these numbers was a March 2nd visit by 100 second graders from Lewis Carroll Elementary School on Merritt Island. It was wonderful to see and hear their energy fill the museum and overflow in the Plaza. Educating the next generation about veterans’ stories of service is our primary mission. If you’d like to be a part of that and join our wonderful docent corps, please contact Dean Schaaf (321-794-4371) or Becky Zingarelli (321-704-9194). The museum is open 6 days a week from 8:30 – 4:00, and noon to 4:00 on Sundays.

Artifact Highlight for the Month: John Van Lear donated an M3 early operational weapon night vision system sniper scope. The infrared scope was powered by a 6-volt automotive battery connected to a vacuum tube power pack which created 20,000 volts to power the system. The entire integrated system weighed over 26 pounds. It had an effective range of 125 yards and could detect infrared flashlight signals up to 1 mile. It was first used in the Korean War. The rifle and sniper scope can be seen in the Korean War exhibit on the 1st floor of the museum.

Veterans Back to Class : It works in Brevard County

Page 4: FOR RENT - Veterans Memorial Center – Brevard County ...  · Web viewThe word is getting out thanks to the tri-fold and rack card that advertises our Center, Museum, Library, and

MOAACC and the Veterans Memorial Center (VMC) of Brevard County created a special program in 2015-16 in partnership with the Joe Foss Institute (JFI) in Arizona. It may be a plan that can work with any MOAA Chapter or Veteran Organization. We call it Brevard Veterans Back to Class.

— JFI covers costs of supporting materials and provides lesson plans as needed. They certify volunteers and can help with scheduling in local schools

— BVBC has 17 volunteers who visited 19 schools and talked with 6280 students at many grade levels in 2016. We found great support through JROTC leaders as well as Social Studies Teachers after clearing our plan with the School Board.

— Program offers links to the teachers who describe their needs for the presentations and offers at least 10-15 minutes each class period to the volunteer veteran to tell their story of service and how being a veteran has impacted their lives.

The plaza continues to get facelifts.. The Cobra was painted and new manufactured skids were installed. The repositioning back on the stick is planned for early this month. The BVC HUMMWV was positioned at the center for people to enjoy. Currently 15 bricks have been purchased and are waiting to be engraved around April 5th.

SPACE COAST TABLE TENNIS CLUB

For 20 years the Space Coast Table Tennis Club has been playing table tennis at the Veterans Memorial Center on Mon and Wed nights. Chuck Carbucle and Jene Reed, both are 86 years old and retired Air Force Veterans, they are active and play at the center. The Veterans Memorial Center let the Space Coast Table Tennis Club affords Jene and Chuck and many other Vets the opportunity to compete. We are honored to have all our Vets play and especially these men because they may be 86 but they compete at a surprising level.

The Space Coast Table Tennis Club welcome you to join us.

Hello everyone! I hope that everyone is enjoying The Council Courier. Thank you to everyone that helps monthly to accomplish this. It continues to be the goal of this editor to have it completed the last day of each month. And also to have it emailed or mailed to you within the first two business days of the month.

VETERANS GIFT SHOP

The stores continues to do well. We did $3,000 in sales for February. The first week in March marked a milestone of over $10,000 in sales since our opening on Veterans Day. All net proceeds directly support the museum and the VMC

The inventory levels continues to climb and diversify. The month we added beautiful reproduction steel and enamel signs. All categories seems to do well with no items really dominating. Hats, shirts, books, models, pins, decals and signs, all doing well. Chris Gibson runs the day-to-day operations and our volunteers (Miguel, Jerry, Bob, Donn, Charlie) keep things rolling. Dave Miller

LIBRARY REPORT

The VMC library is in the middle of readjusting the locations of the various subjects in preparation for data entry into a library database . We’ll need a lot of help inputting the media; fortunately, we had some folks step up to help out.

We’ve received some neat pictures to spice up the displays.

Paul Julian, who has worked a lot with the Sea Cadets, is going to take a lead in running the library. I’m going to be a library assistant due to some physical problems. I’m sure he will move the library forward.

A GOOD READ“ PSI spies “ by Jim Marrs

Sometimes reality is far stranger than fiction and this book is validation that we have books in our library with strange stories in the wars between the battle of Troy to Afghanistan. It’s a true story of how the US and Russia got into a psychic war with what is was called remote viewing in the Psi world. ( during a meditative state certain persons can go mentally to a place they are directed to and give a visual report) . Even though quantum physics has awed scientists with its weird world, this seems to go to an even weirder level of reality. Actual successful spying is discussed with astounding results during the cold war. Since it is so “out of whack “with our common day world , it brought constant bickering between believers and those who just could not accept a phenomenon outside our normal paradigm. One officer commented “Even if you can prove to me that this works, I will not believe it”.

Remote viewing was used during the Iran hostage crises but no feedback was given till after the release in which the report was that there was success. Other projects are described with varying levels of success.

If you are a person who believes everything must fit in your physical reality, don’t read this book. If you believe that the universe is crazier than you can imagine, it’s a good read. Tim Scott VMC staff librarian

CHAPLAIN MESSAGE

Palm Sunday is Celebrated by Christians as Jesus Christ enters into Jerusalem (4-9- 17) So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (John 12:13)

Passover is Part of the Jewish tradition of remembering how the angel of death passed over all to kill the firstborn, unless a certain sign was placed over the doorway of each believers home. (4-10 17)

That ye shall say, It [is] the sacrifice of the LORD'S Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses.

And the people bowed the head and worshipped (Exodus 12:27)

Easter is a Christian Celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the first day of the week the third day after his Crucifixion on the Cross (3-16-17)

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.” Mark 16:6 | NIV | GOD BLESS AMERICA/Chaplain Chip

A HISTORY OF WOMEN IN THE U.S. MILITARY

Page 10: FOR RENT - Veterans Memorial Center – Brevard County ...  · Web viewThe word is getting out thanks to the tri-fold and rack card that advertises our Center, Museum, Library, and

From Continental Army Soldier Deborah Samson to the first female Army Rangers, Capt. Kristen Griestand 1st Lt. Shaye Haver, American women have been serving in the U.S. Military for hundreds of years.

World War 1 U.S. Navy poster

used to recruit women, 1917

Women have been a part of the war effort since the Revolutionary War, but in the early days of our nation they had to cloak themselves in disguise to serve alongside men. When they were accepted into the military, women were given auxiliary roles. As the weapons and methods of warfare changed in the late 20th century, however, the Pentagon began to realize that gender matters less on the battlefield.

The First Female U.S. Soldiers

During the Revolutionary, Civil and Mexican Wars, a small number of women were involved in combat, but they had to disguise themselves as men and enlist under aliases. Deborah Samson Gannett, from Plymouth, Massachusetts, was one of the first American woman soldiers. In 1782, she enlisted under the name of her deceased brother, Robert Shurtleff Samson. For 17 months, Samson served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. She was wounded twice. She cut a musket ball out of her own thigh so a doctor wouldn't find out she was a woman. Years later, in 1804, Samson was awarded a pension for her service. Also during the Revolution War, in 1776, Margaret Corbin fought alongside her husband and 600 American soldiers as they defended Fort Washington, New York.

In the Mexican War, Elizabeth C. Newcume dressed in male attire and joined the military at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1847, she battled Native Americans in Dodge City. Ten months later, she was discharged when her gender was discovered. In July 1848, however, Congress paid her the land and money she was owed for her service.

In the Civil War, several women disguised themselves as men to enlist and fight for the Union. Sarah Rosetta

Wakeman enlisted as Private Lyons Wakeman. She died during the war in New Orleans at the Marine General Hospital. At the time of her death, her true gender was not known. In fact, her headstone reads Lyons Wakeman.
