Zenith Policy for DealersH. C. Bonfig, vice president in charge

of household radio, announces thatZenith Radio Corporation's program offuture expansion has now reached thepoint where it is time for distributorsto begin active work on adding strengthto the company's already virile and ag-gressive dealer organization.

Zenith has already decided on a num-ber of fundamental policies: "First,"Mr. Bonfig stated, "Zenith is commit-ted to a policy of remaining in theradionics field exclusively. By confin-ing our efforts to the line of businesswe know, we will render infinitely bet-ter service. We intend to continue ourpolicy of distributing merchandisethrough independent distributors anddealers.

This was announced at a Philadel-phia conference with distributors-thefifth in a series of round table discus-sions which began in Chicago in July.Mr. Bonfig, accompanied by Edgar G.Herrmann, assistant vice president anddirector of advertising, and by E. R.Taylor, manager of Zenith's sales plan-ning division, had similar meetings inCleveland, Boston and New York.

Hoffman Radio ReadiesR. J. McNeely, sales manager of the

Hoffman Radio Corp., Los Angeles, fora number of years, but who becameplant superintendent since the war, hasreturned to his sales post. His imme-diate work for the organization will bein planning the distribution of Hoff -man's post-war lines.

nounces appointment of Harold W.Schaefer as assistant manager of thenewly formed radio receiver division ofthe Westinghouse Electric and Manu-facturing Co., Pittsburgh. He will bein charge of engineering and produc-tion under Harold B. Donley, managerof the new division.

As soon as conditions permit, West-inghouse will build and sell a completeline of home radio receivers, includingstandard receiving sets and frequencymodulation, with and without phono-graph combinations, and home tele-vision equipment. Engineering and de-velopment work is already under wayon these new models. The company lastmanufactured home radio receivers in1928.

radio research, development and manu-facture. The radio division at Balti-more and the company's lamp divisionat Bloomfield, N. J., build basic elec-tronic equipment for broadcasting sta-tions.

Motorola's Trade PlansThe sales management of the Galvin

Manufacturing Corp., is now developingcomplete plans for post-war radio dis-tribution, many of which will soon beannounced to the trade. The companywill resume the civilian production ofa complete line of AM and FM homeradio, automatic phonographs, port-able and personal radios, standard andspecific automobile sets, and 2 -way ra-dio telephone systems. Immediatelythe green light has been given byWPB, Motorola will be in an excellentposition for quick conversion, as theyhave concentrated wholly upon radiomanufacture throughout the war pe-riod.

Bendix Home Radio SetsErnest R. Breech, president, an-

nounces the Bendix Aviation Corpora-tion will manufacture and market aline of home radio sets through theBendix Radio Division, as soon as themilitary situation permits. Improve-ments in quality and performance ofchassis components, speakers and rec-ord -playing mechanisms will be fea-tures of the complete line of AM -FMhome radio and radio -phonograph com-binations, to be manufactured at theBaltimore plant.

Models will be offered to the publicat popular prices through selected dis-tributors and retailers. Campaigns innational and local advertising mediaacquainting the public with the newlines, will begin as soon as the com-pany's war production program is com-pleted. This production includes air-craft radio receivers and transmitters,ultra high frequency and micro -waveequipment, aircraft instrument landingsystems, precipitation static dissipators,and more recently adaptations of mili-tary models to intercommunicationunits for railways and municipal mobileequipment.

Mr. W. P. Hilliard, general managerof the Radio Division, believes that thetremendous volume of production forwar (which recently reached a $200,-000,000 -a -year level) has pointed theway to production of high quality radioequipment at a price well within therange of the average person's peace-time pocketbook. In the meantime, thecompany is establishing distributionand sales channels to prepare fortransition to peacetime production, mer-chandising and employment.

Stromberg-Carlson Gets SetClifford J. Hunt, sales manager of

the radio division of the Stromberg-Carlson Co. of Rochester, N. Y., an-nounces the appointment of Frank J.McCloskey as southern region radiosales representative. He will contactdistributors and key dealers of the com-pany's lines of radio, F -M and televisionsets. Mr. McCloskey will also aid inthe establishment of area distributor-ships, opening of key trading areas inreadiness for the time when the post-war line is available and supervisingthe selection, training and assignmentof sales personnel.

Un-der this plan, the dealer issues a pref-erence certificate to the consumer, whichhelps expedite early delivery of the typeof radio set for which the consumer ex-presses preference when signing the"P.D.Q." Jobs for Signal Corps VeteransWesley M. Angle, president of Strom -

berg -Carlson Co., Rochester, N. Y., ischairman of the subcommittee on post-war employment problems of the Na-tional Association of Manufacturers. Inan article published by the Institute ofRadio Engineers, he makes the pointthat today's war -accelerated uses ofradio, radar and electronics makes itimperative that the nation's radio engi-neering -minded youth in the armedforces or at school assume their placesin the profession with the least possibledelay. These young engineers of recenttraining must be looked upon as the"new blood" and the potential discover-ers of new applications of communica-tions' principles. The field of communi-cations engineering promises to offerricher, fuller and more compelling in-terests than its sister fields in tomor-row's world.

General Mills Appoints ImhoffHarry A. Bullis, president of Gen-

eral Mills, announces the appointmentof Roscoe E. Imhoff as sales managerin charge of home appliance sales withheadquarters in Minneapolis. The homeappliance line is part of the company'sMechanical Division under the super-vision of A. D. Hyde, vice president.

The company's plans provide for aline of volume -selling small home appli-ances, as typified by coffee makers andhome mixers, to be sold through con-ventional trade channels.

With Westinghouse since 1919, wherehe had last been sales manager of themerchandising division, Imhoff left in1940 and joined Proctor Electric Com-pany as vice president and general salesmanager. With this appointment, Gen-eral Mills begins to build a sales organi-zation to market its lines of applianceswhich are expected to be ready as soonas reconversion permits.

Ranges Coming InA drop in the bucket compared to the

estimated demand is WPB's authoriza-tion of three manufacturers to producea total of 5,638 standard, four -burnermodel electric ranges in October, No-vember and December. They are: Frig-idaire division, General Motors Corp.,2,344 ranges; 2,500 ranges from Gib-son Refrigerator Co., and 794 rangesfrom A. J. Lendemann and Hoverson.

These producers are able to meettheir quotas without interference withwar work. Since standard ranges havenot been made for about two years, itis said that production might be de-layed by the need for preparing equip-ment.

The Government hopes to authorizethe production of 88,000 electric rangesfor household use this year, or about16 per cent of the pre-war output. Butnone of the four -burner ranges willreach dealers until late in the year, andmost of them not until early in 1945.Then, only for essential replacementssales.

Through ManufacturersAccording to Bob Almy, manager dis-

tributor sales, Sylvania Electric Prod-ucts, Inc., radio tubes are one of thefirst items in the electronic classifica-tion which the government has listedfor disposal. Radio tubes were selectedbecause there are relatively few manu-facturers and a critical civilian short-age exists.

The first lot of radio tubes whichhas been declared surplus by the gov-ernment will soon be released. The ex-act quantities are not yet known. It isbelieved that the majority of receivingtypes can be absorbed quickly in thecivilian market, if they are not neededfor war orders.

Bob Almy questions if the first tuberelease will make a sizable dent in theoverall shortage condition; and whendistributed nationally, will not be par-ticularly noticeable to individual radioservice dealers and their customers.

On tube production, reports from thefield show that deliveries of "MR" tubeshave generally improved during thepast sixty days. Certain types such asthe 12SA7GT/G and the battery typescontinue on the "acute" list.

Of the 4,500,000 "MR" tubes sched-uled by WPB for the third quarter ofthis year, it is doubtful if the goal of1,500,000 per month will be exceededappreciably. The WPB is reviewingfourth quarter schedules, though, withthe view of authorizing additional"MR" production, particularly criticaltypes. Our feeling is that the fourthquarter will see gradual improvementin "MR" deliveries in types and quan-tities.

ACCORDING to the findings of ameeting of the Electronics Dis-

tributors Industry Advisory Com-mittee held recently in Washingtonunder the auspices of the War Pro-duction Board, lines of radio re-placement parts will remain stan-dardized in accordance with the re-strictions of WPB L-293, which isin effect for the primary purposeof conserving critical materials.Standard lines are now in existenceon paper and electrolytic condensers,transformers and choke coils. Stan-dardization of volume controls is notas necessary now as it was 2 yearsago when the order was issued. Asfar as radio and radar equipmentis concerned, the bottleneck is inmanufacturing facilities and not inmaterials.

Deliveries of victory line trans-formers have been, according to re-ports, very poor, particularly onpower transformers. It is believedthat the victory line might as wellbe eliminated since transformerswere fairly well standardized any-way. A further objection to the vic-tory line is the lack of a small, 6 -volt transformer, which would prob-ably be the largest -selling type. Thedimensions of the victory line trans-formers are too large for the chassisof a table model radio because theline is made to better specifications,involving additional materials suchas larger core and more wire.

But some of the restrictions con-tained in the above order have beenrelaxed. Condenser manufacturers,for example, have been permitted touse aluminum cans. A similar stepis planned for transformers, sinceproducers who request it will beauthorized to make specific quanti-ties of their regular transformersfor replacement purposes. That doesnot mean that a special run will beallowed, but merely an increase be-yond the quantity for which thecompany has military and industrial

,orders. At present it does not ap-pear that much production will beauthorized until the fourth quarterof 1944, but by the end of the yearthe transformer situation should bebetter. In general, however, theradio industry may be one of thelast to be freed from all restrictions.

Replacement Tubes

Early this year the WPB beganissuing firm production directiveson all glass GT receiving tubes.Manufacturers were directed to pro-duce certain quantities of tubes of

each type, marking them "MR" andto interchange a specified numberwith each of the other manufac-turers on a basis comparable to the1941 inter -manufacturer distribu-tion. Manufacturers have been askedto allocate tubes to their distribu-tors in accordance with their 1941pattern for the sale of carton -packedtubes. Private -brand lines for whichcarton -packed tubes are purchasedare included in the allocation, butequipment manufacturers who buytubes in bulk and then repack themare not. Each tube manufacturerhas presented a definite distributionplan, which has been approved bythe WPB.

But radio service dealers shouldbear in mind that the peak in warproduction has not yet been reachedin the electronics industry. Tomeet this year's schedules the indus-try must produce during the lasthalf of the year at a rate 25 percent greater than ever before. Butin receiving tubes, all military re-quirements for metals, glass GT's,and locktals should be met duringthe third quarter.

On the basis of a yearly require-ment of 18,000,000 tubes, virtuallyall civilian requirements should beproduced during the third quarter(which ends in September) . Sincethe going rate for the first 5 monthshas been only 16,000,000 a year, thesituation is improving. While the

Division has given the producers 100per cent of their material require-ments and has not attempted to holdback production in any way, over-all production has decreased becauseof attempts to switch from one typeof tube to another. Moreover, evena yearly requirement of 18,000,000tubes will not satisfy the demand,since 1941 shipments of carton -packed tubes were 33,000,000.

An industry representative esti-mated that the normal demand forthe last few years has been as. muchas 65,000,000 or 70,000,000. Al-though the figures published by theRCA license bureau for 1941 wereonly for 36,000,000 tubes, it is be-lieved that many tubes purchasedin bulk have been used for replace-ments rather than for originalequipment. The fact that no newradio sets have been made since1941 means that demand has sub-stantially increased. In additionproduction in 1942 and 1943 hasmet only a fraction of even the36,000,000 tube requirement.

Tubes For DealersInsofar as distribution of tubes

is concerned, the point might bemade (which RADIO SERVICE DEALERhas made time and again) that inmetropolitan areas especially deal-ers are not receiving fair treatment,because numbers of distributors areholding tubes to use in their ownrepair and servicing departmentsrather than allocating them to deal-ers. Because of complaints receivedfrom consumers in small marketschanges in WPB -547 have been sug-gested which would rate distributorson their past sales and the factor ofpopulation shifts, applied to thetotal number of tubes actually man-ufactured. But it is generally be-lieved that no change should bemade, and that the present systemin which quantities to which rat-ings were assigned were based onlyon distributors' past sales, shouldbe given a longer trial. And anyway,many of the complaints are consid-ered unjustified, in view of condi-tions. If there were sufficient pro-duction of a limited number of crit-ical types for one quarter, the prob-lem would clear up automatically.

There are about 20 types of tubesthat are the most urgently needed,and except for the fact that thegreatest complaint in rural areashas to do with the lack of batterytubes, production of which wasstopped by L-76, other complaintsare not always so well justified. Theloudest protests come often fromthose who were not in the radiobusiness in 1941 or from dealerswho are unwilling to take any stockexcept the most critical types oftubes. Actually, distributors havebeen reluctant (to put it mildly) toallocate any tubes to dealers whoare entitled to them unless theyagreed to buy a lot of extremely slowturnover tubes as well. -L.C.S.

Another feature of Weeks & Dick-inson's wartime program is the es-tablishment of a "Service Bar." Thiscounter features musical recordingswhich can be sent to boys and girlsin the service. Practically every do-mestic camp has one or more phono-graphs available and the boy orgirl receiving his or her recordingsfrom home can easily arrange to havethem played without undue difficulty.

At this counter may be found the"Service Hit Parade," a list of num-bers especially popular with service-men and servicewomen. This actsas a guide to the purchase of records.

In order to especially plug this"Service Bar," Weeks & Dickinsonrecommends a five-minute weeklyradio program entitled, "In the Serv-ice." On this program news of pro-motions, transfers, and other hap-penings of interest to armed forcesare mentioned. Naturally, the com-mercial stresses the desirability ofgiving records to servicemen on theirbirthdays, anniversaries, or just anyold time.

Nor is this the only "Bar" atWeeks & Dickinson. They have a"School Days" bar in another sectionof the store where musical record-ings of interest to boys and girlsfrom the first grade through highschool are featured.

Boys and girls have a special clubof their own where they make apurchase of at least two recordingsper month. At the end of fourmonths, when eight records have

been purchased, they receive a recordabsolutely on the house. Selectedlists of recordings are made up anda mimeographed copy of the list isgiven to each pupil in the school sys-tem. The list is divided into sec-tions, each section featuring record-ings which have particular interestto students of say the first, second,fifth or seventh grades. Teachers aremore than happy to give out theselists to pupils because it makes theirclassroom more musically inclined.It takes but a little time to mimeo-graph these copies and children areasked to look over the list and talkover the list with their parents.

Weeks & Dickinson realize thatthe average family is more apt tohave a victrola in its home that isnot being used than it is a radio.Families are so used to twisting adial to pick up the radio news thatthey do not think of the enjoymentto be derived from their phonograph.For this reason, the firm runs aseries of newspaper displays point-ing out the advantages of phono-graph usage. Among the advantagesmentioned in the ad are (1) abilityto play a tune over again as oftenas desired; (2) freedom from staticor man-made interference; (3) use-

fulness of the victrola to allow chil-dren who practice on the piano orsome other musical instrlment toappreciate the way a real profes-sional plays a certain tune or pas-sage.

Also, they run ads pointing outthat by running the phonographmore and the radio less for the dur-ation, scarce radio tubes and otherparts may be conserved, for it is awell-known fact, says Weeks & Dick-inson in the ad, that if a radio givesout, it may not be repaired for someweeks or even months.

The company also promotes a rec-ord exchange where possessors ofrecordings two, three or four yearsold may trade them for other usedrecordings. Those having used rec-ords bring them to the store to tradethem for others which they desire.This department is in charge of asaleslady who concentrates entirelyon the recordings from one to fifteenyears old. The trades are usually"even-steven," though occasionallymoney is involved. Weeks & Dickin-son makes no direct profit-or verylittle-from this department but it isone of the greatest traffic -buildersthis store has ever known.

DEALERS REGISTER CUSTOMERS

Announced by Ben Abrams, presidentof Emerson Radio and Phonograph Cor-poration, the company's new radio pro-gram, "You Can't Take It With You,"is important to the marketing side ofthe radio industry as it will be used asa vehicle to publicize the great post-war plan for Emerson Radio dealersknown as the "P.D.Q. Plan."

With the P.D.Q. Plan, the dealergets: streamers for window display,point -of -sale counter easels, a Prefer-ence Delivery Quota Register with roomfor about 150 names on detachableblanks and a stub book of certificates.The customer gets: advice-to registerwith the dealer right then and there.In three stages the customer is movedalong to the final result:

"1. Sign the Preference DeliveryQuota Register now. Write in yourohoice of the type of set you think youwill want.

"2. You will be given a PreferenceDelivery Quota Certificate to keep untilsets, become available.

"3. Then all you will need do isbring in your certificate and everyeffort will be made to give you prefer-ence in your purchase of an EmersonRadio.

"When civilian production begins itwill take more than a year to catchup with the public demand for new

radios. . . . This is not an order. Youwill be under no obligation to buy. Youpay nothing until you have made yourpurchase. Your Preference DeliveryQuota Certificate simply means thatyou will be assured early delivery ofa new postwar radio. . . ."

Dealers are asked to return onlycompletely filled in register forms, di-rect to the manufacturer, although theymay have gotten the register foliosthrough their jobbers.

Naturally, this merchandising planhas attracted many "write-in" appli-cants. That is, those who have neverbefore been radio or appliance dealers,but wanting to enter the field after thewar find the PDQ plan tailor-made tohelp them break in to what promises tobe a gigantically lucrative business.According to Jack Gaertner, advertisingmanager, the company considers suchapplicants, with few exceptions, to besheer opportunists. They are eager toget in on the first "cream" demand, butwill drop out when that tapers down tomore normal levels. Well establishedoutside retail outlets (such as depart-ment stores, or hard goods stores whereradios are logical plus lines) may, how-ever, be added to the roster of legiti-mate dealers where it is warranted bylocal competitive conditions.

The PDQ plan serves more than onepurpose:

1. It qualifies the buyers well aheadof time, together with the modelswanted.

2. Since the register provides spacesfor checking two varieties each of ra-dios, phono-radios and portables, be-sides "other type" (which customersifill in with "television" "FM" and thelike) the company gets a preview of thekinds of models it should put intoproduction first. Some customers havebeen found to indicate a "full -line"purchase, such as: 3 table models, 1console combination, 1 3 -way radio, 2personal radios and 1 television set.

3. The column, "price I would pay,"gives the company an idea of the rangeof models that can be most profitablyproduced for immediate postwar de-mand. With few exceptions Emersonfinds that the prices entered by cus-tomers fall within established ranges,so the entries offer reasonably accurateindications of the kind of money thecustomer actually has for post-war ra-dio buying.

The customary quotas for distributorsand dealers are not being set up asyet-too early. But the stir being cre-ated by the P.D.Q. plan in the trade,and with customers through the radioprogram "You Can't Take It WithYou," is accomplishing a great dealtowards making the public radio -pur-chase -conscious, against the strenuouscompetition offered by other types ofconsumer goods.

A separate service pro-gram for radios and combinations isbeing developed by the radio, televi-sion and electronics department ofthe company.

This operation need not interferein any way with already well estab-lished and smoothly functioning dis-tributor and dealer service facilities.With the aid of local advertising thecenters make it easier for housewivesto avail themselves of reliable serv-icing, and it may mean a perma-nently improved system of applianceservice to the public. The way the

regional service centers may oper-ate will vary with the particularproblems and requirements of theareas which they serve.

Some distributors, for instance,(particularly in metropolitan areas)may call on the service centers forparts only. Others will encouragetheir appliance service center dealer-ships (qualified service dealers) tomake use of the regional centers notonly for parts, but also for servicefacilities over and above the stand-ard services performed by dealers.

Each distributor or dealer withinservicing distance of the regionalcenters will have the advantage ofdrawing upon a more complete localstock of replacement parts than hemight be able to maintain, and hewill not be required to have a largeinvestment tied up in parts. More-over, there will be fewer replace-ment parts lying unused on theshelves of one regional service centerthan would be required to fill theshelves of each of several distribu-tors. Therefore, the plan allows asmaller backlog of parts in each re-gion, thus conserving parts and mak-ing them readily available to thecustomers who need them.

6. Handle with courtesy callsfor service which he is notequipped to render, whichmeans either sub -letting thejob to the nearest qualifiedshop or directing the cus-tomer to one.

7. Identify his store adequatelyas a headquarters for G. E.service, with decalcomaniadisplays and local advertis-ing.

8. Equip all servicemen withadequate tools.

How It WorksLet's suppose that dealer Jones in

Fitchburg, Mass., is the local G. E.appliance service center. He handlesa fairly complete line of appliancesand can make all of the repairs re-quired in G. E. minimum standardsfor dealer service centers. A Mrs.Smith comes in to dealer Jones with

a number of G. E. appliances whichwere broken when a moving van wasdamaged in an accident. The itemsinclude a refrigerator, range, clean-er, fan, clock, and radio.

Jones has on hand the most com-monly called for repair parts on mostof the appliances. But in the acci-dent, several of Mrs. Smith's appli-ances suffered unusual damage.Through his distributor Jones ordersfrom the regional G. E. applianceservice center (in Boston) the partshe needs for repairs which he is ableto make. The parts are shipped thesame day if his order reaches thecenter before 4 p.m., and the partsarrive at the store the followingmorning. Overnight service is theaim of the regional centers withintheir coverage.

A few repairs on the range are ofmajor character and they requireheavy, expensive equipment. Thedealer ships those jobs to the servicecenter. Jones doesn't sell clocks, buthe has on hand full information onthe repair of Mrs. Smith's clock. Hemay either sublet the clock repair jobto the nearest authorized G. E. clockrepair shop, or he may tell Mrs.Smith where to take it, dependingon circumstances.

Jones can handle Mrs. Smith's ra-dio, as he happens to be a qualifiedG. E. radio service shop, besides be-ing the local appliance service center.If this were not the case, he wouldsublet the radio repair job to an-other qualified G. E. shop.

Rebuilding of sealed refrigeratorunits requires factory equipment,

and this job is too big even for theregional appliance service centers.This kind of job is handled by fiveG. E. -owned factory rebuilding cen-ters in operation in Long IslandCity, N. Y., Cleveland, Schenectady,Kansas City and San Francisco.

Following the principle of "re-stored service" only for the duration,G. E. is asking its qualified localservice centers not to sell parts un-less the parts are necessary for theoperation of an appliance. Everyeffort will be made to prevent a runon parts. No consumer will be en-couraged to keep on hand spareparts, for only by using such partsjudiciously can essential "restoredservice" be maintained.

Dealer -Helps

Compact folders and a booklet in-tended for appliance users, givingcommon-sense suggestions for keep-ing appliances in good working or-der are distributed to dealers foruse in conjunction with the serviceprogram. In preparing these leaflets(see illustration) G. E. enlisted theaid of home service editors of na-tional magazines, advertising man-agers of several central stations andhousewives themselves. This pre-tested literature is designed to helpcustomers avoid making unnecessarycalls on the service dealer and, onthe other hand, to encourage servicecalls in place of amateur tinkeringwhen such a call is advisable.

The policy is to have the customerbring the smaller appliances to the

STROMBERG CARLSON 10 AND 11

The Stromberg Carlson 10 and 11 use special int r -stage audio transformers to couple a screen grid detrac-tor to a pair of 45 grids. A hum balancing arrangemosntrequiring a split secondary is used. Under present con-ditions a replacement transformer of that type may notbe obtainable, but a substitute can be used if the humbucking circuit or balancing arrangement is changedslightly. The centertap of the secondary is connectedto B. and a 25 ohm wire -wound potentiometer is usedfor balancing. If the hum is very loud, additional ca-pacitance can be added to the filter system. The valuerequired can be determined by experiment on individual

A typical arrange-ment used in replacing an 8 mfd., 600 -volt peak, wet elec-trolytic by two 10 plus 10 mfd., 450 -volt units is shown inthe diagram.

CARD 4REPLACING WET ELECTROLYTICS AND HIGH

SURGE DRY ELECTROLYTICS

Properly installed miniature size capacitors can replacewet and high surge voltage dry electrolytics in practicallyall receivers. To insure satisfactory operation, the circuitsurge voltage must not exceed the surge peak voltage ofthe replacement capacitor (525 volts for 450 volts work-ing). In many cases this means series connection of re-placement capacitors.

To determine the circuit surge voltage, temporarily re-place the faulty unit by a 1 or 2 mfd., 600 or 1000 -voltpaper capacitor. Then connect a 1000 ohms/volt or higher

To correct a bad howl when the volume control isturned down, replace the 40 mfd. 25 -volt condenserwhich is mounted below the main filter. Intermittentoperation may be caused by a defective main filter(20-20-150).

The surge voltage is thevoltage at which the pointer hesitates after its first swingbefore beginning a relatively slow decrease to operatingvoltage as the set warms up. This test should be madewith the highest line voltage which may occur in the loca-tion where the set will be used.

If the surge voltage is too high for a single miniatureunit, connect units of the proper capacitance and voltagerating in series to serve as the replacement.

Dry electrolytics with a capacitance as low as two-thirdsof the original capacitance will usually be found satisfac-tory when replacing wet electrolytics.

CARD 5FORMULA FOR SOLDER

In replacing bypasses and filters in older models ofMajestic and Grunow radios, I find that practically allof them were made of tin foil. By saving this tin foiland melting it down and then mixing it with clean softlead in the proportion of 6 parts tin to 4 parts lead, Iobtained excellent solder for radio work. I cast thesolder into sheets 1/16 -inch thick and cut it into nar-row strips. It should be used with soldering paste. Caremust be taken not to overheat or burn the solder whilemelting it.

If the noise of the motor is heard only when the cowlantenna is above the roof level of the auto, place an.00008 condenser between antenna and ground.

If the set reception fades while in the car, but checksfavorably on bench test-mere alignment will not help.Replace the OZ4 tube and the fading usually will becured.

HOW multi -range meters are de-signed. constructed & operated.

PART I

ELECTRICAL instruments, ormeters, are older than the elec-tron theory and come from a

long chain of inventions. The in-ventor of the dial and pointer, soprominent on early sun -dials, is lostin antiquity. Springs and jewels areof more recent development. TheNuremburg Egg, a watch, used amainspring and was made in about1500 A.D. by Peter Hele, of Nurem-burg.

A patent was granted to threeEnglish watch makers in 1704 for"jewels to pivot holes of watches andclocks." The inventor, NicholasFacis, was originally a native ofSwitzerland.

The D'Arsonval, a moving coil per-manent magnet type of instrument,had a succession of evolutionizingdevelopments from 1850 to 1888,when Weston gave us the modern in-strument which has seen little basicchange since then.

To understand more fully the useof the instrument which is the foun-dation of nearly all of our modern"Multi -Testers" and D.C. instru-ments, we must first review somefundamentals.

ELECTRIC AND MAGNETICFIELDS

It is common knowledge that theearth revolves around the sun be-cause of the pull of gravity. Thisgravitation is a field of force, orsphere of influence, attracting theearth to the sun, even though nopsysical bonds connect them.

You will remember that a simpletwo -plate capacitor, or condenser, hasa difference of potential between thetwo plates when charged. This dif-ference of potential manifests itselfby a dielectric field of force, oftencalled the "electro-static field," or"electric field." This field is visual-ized as dielectric lines radiating fromthe plates of the capacitor throughthe dielectric which contains thecharge. In drawings, the number of

lines indicate the field intensity. Ar-rowheads on the lines are used to in-dicate the direction of the field. Thisis the direction in which a small,positively charged body would bemoved if placed within that field.This is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 2 illustrates the directionof the lines of force for three con-ditions. Part (a) shows the linesof force around both a positive anda negative charge; part (b) showsthe lines of force between two adja-cent but oppositely charged par-ticles; part (c) shows the lines offorce between two adjacent but sim-ilarly charged particles.

An impressed voltage always pro-duces an electric field proportionalto the voltage strength. What wethen term voltage may be consid-ered the manifestation of an elec-tric field.

We are all familiar with the factthat a "magnet" can attract a pieceof iron or steel through space. Theremust then be a field of force betweenthe magnet and the iron or steel at-tracted to it. We call this field offorce the "magnetic field of force,"or more simply the "magnetic field."

We have also seen that an impressedvoltage always produces an electricfield that is proportional to the im-pressed voltage. Now, a flow of cur-rent always produces a magneticfield, the strength of which, in air, isproportional to the strength of thecurrent.

Fundamentally, what is termedvoltage is there only because the elec-tric field manifests itself as voltage,and perhaps what is called current isthere only because the magnetic fieldcauses a phenomenon that has beentermed current. Strictly speaking,electric energy is not carried by volt-ages and currents; it is carried bythe electric and magnetic fields inwhich the energy is stored.

We have learned that a movingelectric current sets up a magneticfield. In Figure 3 are illustrated themagnetic lines of force around awire which is perpendicular to theprinted page and through which elec-trons are flowing from the rear ofthe page toward the front. Whentwo wires are side by side suchthat electrons, or current, throughone move in the opposite directionfrom the other, the resultant mag-netic lines of force are as shown inFigure 4. Here the current is flow-ing from the back of the pagethrough the wire labeled (-) andback to the rear of the paper throughthe wire labeled ( + ). Current flowis herein taken to be the same aselectron flow, from negative to pos-itive.

If we now take a wire carrying anelectric current and form it into ahelix, we will have what is termeda coil, or inductance. The lines offorce will then be concentrated asshown in Figure 5 so that the coilbecomes an electro-magnet with anorth and a south pole. It is to beremembered at this point that likemagnetic poles repel each other andunlike magnetic poles attract eachother.

of the field. In Figure 6. (a), a wireperpendicular to the page lies in amagnetic field between the polepieces of a permanent magnet. Nocurrent is flowing through the wireand the magnetic field is undis-turbed. In Figure 6(b) electronsare flowing through the same con-ductor from the rear of the page.Then a magnetic field is set up aboutthe wire as indicated and the result-ant field within the areas bounded bythe pole pieces of the permanentmagnet will be distorted. On the

bottom of the wire the fields of themagnet and the wire are in the same -direction and thus add together. Onthe top side of the wire they areopposing each other and thus tendto weaken the field in that direction.The wire will thus tend to move up-ward in the direction indicated bythe arrow.

If this wire, in coil form, werenow pivoted so it could not moveout of the field, a torque would beapplied to it, tending to rotate itwithin the field. Figure 7 illustrates

such an arrangement where the coilmakes up a electro-magnet whichmay rotate no more than 180 de-grees, for at that point unlike polesof the magnets would face eachother.

Thee amount of motion imparted tothe pivoted coil is proportional to thestrength of the opposing fields or tothe strength of the current flowingthrough the coil. We have here thena current -indicating device whichmay be made into the conventionalD'Arsonval type D.C. meter, with theaddition of jeweled bearings, point-er and dial, and spring tension tolimit the angle of rotation. Figure8 shows this arrangement.

The reader is aware that the wiremaking up the meter coil offers someresistance to the flow of current andconsequently there is a voltage dropacross the coil. A meter is so de-signed that for full scale deflectionvalue of current the resistance of themeter is small compared to the cir-cuit resistance so that insertion ofthe meter in the circuit does not ap-preciably alter circuit conditions.

To measure current flowingthrough a circuit, that current mustflow through the meter. Consequent-ly the meter to measure current isalways placed in series with theother circuit elements. This isshown in Figure 9.

Now let us suppose that with ameter designed so that the currentfor full scale deflection is 1 ampere,

The following is quoted from a letter marked "Somewhere in Libya"signed by an Officer in an AACS Group, USAAF: -

"The writer just spent a year in Persia. Most of the time along thePersian Gulf where it really gets HOT ! We operated one of yourHT -4-B Transmitters near a place called Abadan. The transmitter per-formed very satisfactorily under the most unfavorable conditions. Idoubt that your engineers ever dreamed that one of your rigs would becalled upon to perform in a place where for 5 days and nights the tem-perature never dropped below 117 degrees and in fact it got up to 134

degrees during the daytime, that is "in the shade" temperature, thehumidity was high and the air salty. Actually the transmitter got muchhotter than that as it was installed in a brick building and no air condi-tioning, not even an exhaust fan. The HT -4-B was used on voice andgave very little trouble. One day the piece of bakelite under the phone/cwswitch caught on fire but this was easily repaired. During the so calledwinter season, the temperature actually got as low as 36 degrees one day,we had a little trouble with mice crawling under the rig, which was set

up on two 4x4 wooden sleepers. It seems the mice liked the heat andthey would crawl up under the transmitter and get lodged in betweenthe rectifier sockets and the frame when the operator switched on thetransmitter the mice would fry, usually a fuse would blow but no otherdamage was done We never did figure why the mice liked the Halli-crafters best. There were several other transmitters in the room but theyalways seemed to pick the HT -4-B; guess they were pretty smart mice!"

The bigger appliances,such as refrigerators, ranges, waterheaters, washers, ironers, dishwash-ers, disposalls, electric sinks, consoleradios or bulky table combinationsare inspected on the premises of thecustomer. Repairs are then madewhich do not require extensive tink-ering-as replacing switches or cal -rod units and such. But if the serv-iceman finds the appliance needs ex-tensive repairs, it is taken to theproper service center where it is giv-en an expert overhauling.

How About It,Radio Service Dealers?

A sample of 4,500 typical Americanfamilies were surveyed recently invarious parts of the country by OCRto find out the repair status, age andquantity of about two dozen householdappliances and items of equipment.

Radios-as was to be expected-stand out as the item most in need ofrepair. Although more than half ofthe appliances are five or more yearsold, the percentage found to be in work-ing order ranges from 85 per cent forradios to 99 per cent for several itemsof heating equipment. About 8 percent of radio -owning households havenone in working order. All in all,though, about 28 per cent of the ra-dios in households are in need of re-pairs and servicing, since the begin-ning of the year. With over 50 percent of the domestic radios in currentuse five or more years old, the volumeof orders for repairs and servicing hasbeen greater than could be handled,what with curtailed manpower andshortages in the popular types of tubesand replacement parts. So only about50 per cent of radio set ownerswere able to get needed repairs andservice.

The case is a little different withcertain appliances. Servicing and re-pair was obtained by 70 per cent ofthe families who wanted this work donefor toasters. But only 9 per cent ofthem were in need for repairs. With16 per cent of owners needing repairsfor their vacuum cleaners, more than75 per cent of them had no troublegetting service.

Refrigerators are 95 per cent ofthem in good working order, though63 per cent of refrigerators are fiveyears or more old. Though only 9per cent needed repairs, only abouthalf of these jobs could be serviced.Of the 16 per cent of owners who havetried to obtain washing machine re-pairs this year, about two-thirds havebeen successful.

On this subject, it appears there is nodearth of opportunities for business forradio service dealers. It may take long-er nowadays to handle a given volumeof service and repair business, but thatit is there, waiting for the enterprising,aggressive men in the trade to cash inon, there is no denying. A "master"service plan, now being operated byGeneral Electric through its distributorsand dealers, is described in this issue.Service is "big business."

the practice of most radio receivermanufacturers to neglect to properly

identify the model numbers on the backof radio chassis.

I have run across radios such asZenith, Philco, Emerson, Admiral andothers where it is impossible to findany model number, making it necessaryto waste much time trying to locateservice notes for them.

A note from you to all well knownradio manufacturers, as the servicedealer's representative, may persuadethem to do something about it.

Licensing of auto ownership calls forcertain mechanical and physical datawhich manufacturers supply on a metalplate, usually found under the hood. Non -licensing of radio ownership leaves thematter of identifying model types prettymuch up to the manufacturer or assem-bler. G.E. Irons This Fall

M. B. Ross, sales manager of thecompany's traffic appliance divisions,announces that two models of electricirons will be manufactured by the Gen-eral Electric Company in its Ontario,California plant under recent OPA andWPB rulings and directive orders.

Both models will be of the automatictype. The majority of the 421,000 irons,which was the quota granted G -E, willcarry a retail price of $8.55, includingtax. The other model will retail at$5.70, including tax. These prices arecomparable to those of prewar models.

Mr. Ross said the new irons will besimilar to the prewar irons manufac-tured by G -E with only minor modifica-tions in the external finish.

It is expected that delivery of theirons will begin in September. Gen-eral Electric's regular distributors willreceive the first shipment based on ironsales of 1940, and dealers will be ableto offer the irons for sale to the generalpublic shortly afterward.

Price ceilings for electric irons havebeen announced by the War ProductionBoard. About 81 per cent of the total2,037,838 irons authorized to be pro-duced by the industry this year forconsumers will retail from $5.30 to$11.70, based on March, 1942, prices.
