Aftermath: Photographs by Joel Meyerowitz

Immediately after the harrowing events of September 11, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was designated an active crime scene and closed off to reporters and photojournalists. Sensing the magnitude of the historical record about to be lost, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer Joel Meyerowitz fought for access to the site. Through a combination of tenacity, fortuitous personal connections, occasional subterfuge, and sheer will, Meyerowitz became the only photographer allowed to document the painful transformation of the World Trade Center site over time. For nine months he photographed “the Pile,” as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the courageous rescue personnel, police officers, firefighters, and construction workers leading the recovery efforts inside it. Aftermath: Photographs by Joel Meyerowitz presents fifty of the wrenching images from this moving historical document.

Tyger, Tyger: Lynn Chadwick and the Art of Now

A juxtaposition of the work of British sculptor Lynn Chadwick (1914–2003) with drawings, paintings, sculptures, and photographs made by a group of international contemporary artists. Though they are from different generations, these artists share focused thematic, stylistic, or conceptual motifs, such as an interest in mythology or ritual, the presence of hybrid-humanoid figures, and the meshing of geometric and organic forms. The exhibition borrows its title from the famous poem in William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience, in which the majestic yet fearsome tiger is questioned about its origins and creator. Lynn Chadwick was part of the post-WWII generation of British sculptors known for their dramatic, welded iron works that combined often-figurative subjects with expres-sionistic abstraction. The Berman Museum has the distinction of holding more works by Chadwick in its collection—over 150 sculptures, more than any other institution in North America.

In July, fifty PV Chamber members networked while taking in the exhibits offered by The Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College. Named for the late philanthropists Philip and Muriel Berman, the Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College is regarded as one of the nation‘s finest small college art museums. The museum program is fully accredited by the American Association of Museums and houses over 4,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, decorative, and cultural objects representing a broad array of art historical genres. In addition, a spectacular collection of large-scale outdoor sculpture is integrated throughout the living and learning environment of the 170-acre campus, making it an ideal place to study, stroll and contemplate.

With over 30,000 visitors annually the museum has enriched the fabric of the community and redefined liberal learning at Ursinus College. Their mission is to foster an understanding of the place of the visual arts in lib-eral education and to serve as an accessible exhibition and education resource to the broader communities in the regional and Tri-state area.

The fi rst mortgage loan was in the amount of $700 on a property still used as a home at 555 N Main Street, Harleysville, PA. The fi rst President was Dr. V.Z. Keeler and the fi rst Corporate Secretary was Alvin C. Alderfer.

Bill Baird of Baird’s Catering cooked up some delicious food for the evening and complimented it with a beautiful spread of fresh fruits and brushetta. YUM!
