WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU GOT EXCITED — REALLY EXCITED — ABOUT A CONFERENCE? When was the last time you attended a conference that was so awesome you just had to express yoursheer pleasure at being a part of it? When was the last time you enjoyed yourselfso much, learned so much, and shared so much with other technology usersthat you refer to it as one of the most memorable weeks you’ve ever had?

If you’d taken a Geek Cruise, you’d know the answer to all of these questions:It was the Geek Cruise you took to the Caribbean. Or the one you took to Alaska.Or the one you took to Hawaii. How do we know? Because our cruisers tell usexactly that, over and over again. They rave about the one-on-one networkingwith industry leaders. They reminisce about the great time they had socializing

with other cruisers who shared theirinterests. They praise the seminars

that taught them the tricksand tips they wished they

learned a lot sooner.

And ‘oh’– what a cruise!

“It was GREAT, Neil!!!! Thanks again for the

opportunity to participate in this bizarre

non-sequitur and mega-feed of both food

and information. Every other conference

venue is lame by comparison.”

“Steve Roberts <[email protected]>

“I’m writing to tell you how much Lisa and I

enjoyed [the conference]; the combining of the

cruise and training really did seem to give the

best of both worlds as far as we were con-

cerned.Whilst we’re describing it as the “event

of a lifetime” to our friends, we might well

come on another Geek Cruise in a year or two!”

“Graham Ellis <[email protected]>

“Your selection of speakers was excellent. This

was a very diverse group and I was amazed at

the feeling of community that permeated the

atmosphere. I will recommend this experience

to anyone that has the opportunity to attend.

The contacts and information are priceless.”

experience, I had a great time and learned a

great deal. I’ll definitely be recommending

future Geek Cruises to my friends, co-workers

aspect of the whole thing was the total

Greetings from a dry docked Geek,

I’m delighted to hear that you are all having a

great time [on Linux Lunacy]. Am I surprised?

Not in the least. MacMania was the best and

I’m sure this cruise is just as wonderful. One of

the things that really made the time special

for me was the impromptu get together we

would have every night in the library. It was

perfect: fifteen or so Geeks, wired up and some

liquored up, telling computer war stories. Of

all the cruises I’ve been on [over half a dozen]

it was the most fun.

Well, enjoy yourselves.

Best,

John de Lancie

ALASKA’S AMPHITHEATER In Alaska, more than in any othercruising waters in the world, there’s aspectacular show playing constantly… outside. So don’t be surprised if,in the middle of a seminar, someoneyells “whale,” and everybody suddenlyrushes to the window to watch a podof great humpback whales perform-ing off the starboard bow. Now whatother conference ever provided thatkind of entertainment?

Europe

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing Europe, cruising is an enticing way to go.Many of Europe’s great cities were built on the sea: Venice, Copenhagen,Istanbul, St. Petersburg, Dubrovnik, Amsterdam. As your ship sails smoothlythrough Europe’s waterways, you’ll move effortlessly from one country toanother, avoiding the hassle of long train rides, immigration lines, languagebarriers, and unexpected costs.

Exquisite ceramic art lies within Istanbul’s mosques.

Built in 114 AD, the library at Ephesus is the center- piece of one of the world’s greatest ruined cities.(Ephesus is a 30-minute bus ride from Kusadasi.)

The 7th Century BC Temple of Apollo at Didyma is one of the few surviving Wonders of the Ancient World.(Didyma is a 45-minute bus ride from Kusadasi.)

An unspoiled Croatian outpost of Venice,Dubrovnik is a charming city for strollers.

Stare in awe at themagnificent ruins of biblical Ephesus. Can you ever get bored? Not likely.

VENICEWhat is it about Venice that has caused so many writers towax poetic about its charms? “The gorgeous and wonderfulreality of Venice,” wrote Charles Dickens,“is beyond thefancy of the wildest dreamer.” “This was Venice,” wroteThomas Mann,“the flattering and suspect beauty—this city, half fairy tale and half tourist trap, in whose insalubrious airthe arts once rankly and voluptuously blossomed, wherecomposers have been inspired to lulling tones of somniferouseroticism.” “Venice,” wrote Truman Capote,“is like eating anentire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go.”

What arouses such outpourings of adoration? Perhaps it’s thecity’s dreamlike quality. Perhaps it’s the light that inspiredRenaissance painters. Perhaps it’s the very improbability of its existence.Whatever it is, visitors to Venice have beenawed, enthralled, and enchanted for centuries.

Venice’s major landmarks are familiar to even the mostcasual traveler: the Grand Canal, St. Mark’s Square, the DucalPalace. But nothing quite prepares you for your first visit.

St. Mark’s Square is surely Venice’s most famous and beautifulpiazza. Facing the square is the opulent St. Mark’s Basilica, laid out in the form of a Greek cross. The effect of lightshimmering against the 43,000 square feet of mosaics hasbeen described as nothing short of magical.

Transportation is by foot or by water. The city’s famous gondolas, and equally famous gondoliers, serve as both a tourist attraction and a means of getting around.During the Renaissance, when Venice reached its heyday,14,000 gondolas traversed the city’s canals.

Today, the city’s Golden Age is reflected in the 15th and 16th century masterpieces by Bellini, Giorgione,Titian, andTintoretto that hang in the Academy Gallery. Masterpiecesby more modern artists—Picasso, Kandinsky, Pollock,Motherwell, and Ernst—can be found in the PeggyGuggenheim Collection, housed in the heiress’s formerapartments in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.

Certainly,Venice has a reality that is at odds with its romanticimage. But that reality takes a back seat as La Serenissima—the most serene one—continues to seduce visitors with anunrivaled beauty. And that is the true reality.

CRUISING EUROPEAN STYLEAttending a conference on a cruiseship offers many advantages over aland conference. A major differenceis the informal socializing that willoccur continuously during everyglorious day. Talk one-on-one withseminar presenters. Pick up discus-sions started earlier with fellowGeek Cruisers. Network practicallyaround the clock.

Come and experience cruisingEuropean style. Relax and learn inan atmosphere of graciousness andattention to detail that will makeyour cruise vacation a truly memo-rable one.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF VACATION, A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONFERENCE If your idea of a great vacation includes more than sitting idly by a pool, then join us for a Geek Cruise. You’ll experience a disparate collectionof cultures reflecting European, African, and American influences, set against the backdrop of a tropical Eden. Sun, sand, and relaxation combined with lots of technology talk and camaraderie. What could be better?

what caused the eventual downfall of the Mayas combine for a history lesson like none other you’veever experienced.

Coba is situated in the depths of the jungle and isregarded as one of the most important archaeologicalsites because of the remains found there. Among thelargest Mayan ruins yet uncovered, Coba has more than3,500 sacred structures surrounded by four naturallakes. Only a few of the structures have been openedto the public. They include the tallest structures in thenorthern part of the Yucatan, such as the soaring 42-meter high Nohoch Mul pyramid that can be climbedfor a stunning view of the surrounding rain forest andthe Coba Group of Pyramids with its 24-meter highIglesia pyramid. With more than 2.5 miles of gravelwalking paths, you can spend hours wandering therugged terrain of the ruins.

The ancient walled city of Tulum is located on the edgeof a cliff overlooking the crystal-blue Caribbean, mak-ing it one of the most spectacular sites in the Mayanworld. Dominated by sacred temples, it’s also the onlyMayan settlement built on the sea.

San Gervasio is the home of Ixchel, the goddess of fertil-ity and good health. Located on the island of Cozumel, this 10-acre holy area was an important pilgrimagecenter for Mayan women who prayed to Ixchel forhealthy babies. All Mayas were encouraged to visit thesacred site at least once in their life.

You can sign up for shore excursions that provideguided tours of the ruins.Take a fascinating step backin history as you explore these breathtaking sites, mar-veling at the fantastic architecture and pondering themysteries that will forever envelope the great Mayas.

MAYAN RUINS The Mayas created one of theworld’s greatest — and most enigmatic — civilizations. While much of Mayan history is shrouded in mystery, the proof of their greatness lies in the magnificentruins of their cities and ceremonial centers found inMexico and Central America. From Tulum on Mexico’sYucatan Peninsula to Copan in Honduras to Tikal inGuatemala, their monuments, palaces, and temples area testament to their superior knowledge, design skills, and construction methods.

The Mayas’ strong presence in Mexico is evidenced bythe name given to the country’s eastern coast: theRiviera Maya. Cozumel and Playa del Carmen provideexcellent starting points for tours of the Mayan ruins, among them, Coba, El Rey,Tulum, Chichen Itza, andSan Gervasio. All of them can be reached within a fewhours’ driving time. And they are worth the time.Thesheer size of the structures, the stories of ongoingarcheological finds, and the intriguing theories about

When on a Western Caribbean cruise be sure to take in one of several Mayan Ruin excursions.

Page 16: For More Fun, Food, and Fabulous Folks than Any Other Cruise! … · 2017-12-20 · Onboard your luxurious cruise ship, you’ll find plenty to do — or plenty of space to do nothing

• CLIA* CRUISE FACTS• Cruising is the best vacation value

• Nine out of 10 people who cruise say they’ll cruise again

• Today’s cruise ships utilize technological innovations in powerand propulsion systems, waste treatement, and communicationsthat make them more efficient, more environmentally friendlyand safer than ever.

• Cruising appeals particularly to the Baby Boom geneartion, withshipboard facilities designed to satisfy their intellectual curiositywith college-level classes and computer centers, their health con-sciousness with top-notch spa, fitness and sports facilities, andtheir independence with a dazzling array of choices for every-thing from accommodations to dining and entertainment.

• All cruise ships that operate in American waters must complywith U.S. environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, theClean Air Act, and the Oil Pollution Act.

• Cruise lines must also meet international regulations that protectthe environment, including SOLAS (the International Conventionfor the Safety of Life at Sea), MARPOL (the InternationalConvention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) that wereestablished by the International Maritime Organization.

• Most cruise lines [including Holland America and NCL] haveadopted aggressive programs of waste minimization, wastereuse and recycling, waste stream management, and shoresidewaste disposal.

• The cruise industry’s highest priority is to ensure the safety andsecurity of its passengers and crew. Security measures havealways been stringent, but increase in times of heightened alert.

• Cruise lines are committed to providing excellent first responseand emergency care to passengers until they can be transferredto a shoreside medical facility. [All cruise lines that we work withhave infirmaries staffed with MDs.]
