Placed on the corner of my desk is a snow globe containing Cinderella’s slipper, along with the quote from her fairy Godmother that reads, “Even miracles take a little time.”

As I write this, it’s mid-January. It’s gray and chilly. Spring feels like it’s eons away. It’s hard to imagine that the lifeless vines covering our gazebo will soon be a blanket of yellow roses. It’s also a little hard on this chilly January day to predict the future: Will we have a great wildflower season? How much rain will the spring monsoons bring? Will the Gardens break ground on the new Visitor Center? Did I hear something about a new LEGO exhibit in September?

At this very moment, there are some unknowns, and by the time you read this, most of those questions will be answered. But today, this is what I know for sure:

The new Visitor Center. We are so grateful and humbled by the generosity from our Garden friends. We are at the finish line of fundraising; our entire team feels the weight of responsibility to ensure that the new construction blends seamlessly with the old. A new gift shop, restroom facilities, exhibit space and enclosed courtyard surrounding the pavilion will complete our Garden campus.

Nature Connects: a LEGO® exhibit will open September 11, 2015, filling the Gardens with 13 larger-than-life, nature-inspired sculptures that will engage and excite visitors.

Signature Events such as Growdown! The Ultimate Home & Garden Tour and the Weird Plant Sale will provide plenty of opportunities for guests to enjoy the spring beauty at the Gardens.

2015 American Public Garden Conference (APGA), Minneapolis Our Directors of Horticulture and Education, myself and a few colleagues from across the U.S. and Canada, will be presenting sessions on Collection Building Through In-Kind Donations, Reinvigorating Your Education Programs, and Garden Design Competitions which engage and Inspire. I’m also thrilled to be moderating a discussion on the results of a survey of Philanthropic Trends for Public Gardens conducted by Marts & Lundy, Inc., in partnership with APGA.

It’s taken hundreds of people, many different Boards of Directors, Directors of Horticulture and even a few different Executive Directors, years of planning, fundraising, sometimes failing, stalling and then starting again, to get to where we are today. And, what about the future? The next garden installation? The next program? Will we have a spectacular wildflower season? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, because after all sometimes, “Even miracles take a little time.”

Michelle Conklin, CFREExecutive Director

The titan arum growing in the southeast corner of the Cox Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion has

reached its full size. In less than three months, it has transformed from a tiny shoot into a beautiful small tree. With its mottled green trunk emerging from the leaves of the Monstera, and the single compound leaf stretching to form a small canopy, it has become a real focal point and deserves a visit in its own right.

Regarded by many as a flagship species for a botanical garden, growing a titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) is a challenging and exciting project for any horticulturist and has become one of the most interesting plants we currently grow at the Gardens.

Discovered in Sumatra in the 1800s, the titan has fascinated botanists and plant enthusiasts since. The plant grows in intervals between dormancy periods from an underground tuber (technically a corm), and produces only one compound leaf per season, a giant one, which resembles a small tree. Eventually, when the plant reaches maturity, a flower may emerge instead of the leaf.

The enormous bloom, with its mal odour, has captivated the imagination of the many thousands of lucky visitors around the world who have had the chance to see this plant in flower. Its dimensions are excessive and its shape flamboyant. It can reach ten feet high!

Unfortunately, flowering in cultivation is very rare and unpredictable and we are years away from that happening with our own young specimen.

Nevertheless, the leaf is also one of the largest of the entire plant kingdom and wondrous just by itself. The petiole (the stalk at the base of the leaf blade), which can be as thick as a human thigh,

Rise of the Titan

is covered with cream colored marks resembling lichen. A mature specimen in cultivation can reach the size of a poolside umbrella.

Even the tuber itself has gigantic proportions and can weigh up to two hundred pounds.

Massimo Boscolo Tucson Botanical Gardens Horticulturalist

As you can see, the name “titan” is particularly appropriate for this true giant. Hopefully, we will be able to cultivate it successfully so that we can all witness and appreciate the life cycle of this unique and extravagant plant.

March, April and May are a special time in the Cox Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion.

Beginning in mid-February, we receive the first of three shipments of chrysalises direct from Malaysia, thereby allowing us to really highlight the butterflies of Southeast Asia in March.

Guests can expect to see a variety of regional species, including lacewings, Asian cruisers, mormons and paper kites. Central American favorites like blue morphos, owls, and longwings will also be present. Then, in April and May we will go “around the world”

Don’t Miss the Final Months of Butterfly MagicThrough May 31, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily

with butterflies hatched from pupae originating in Australia, Japan, Costa Rica and Peru, just to name a few.

As such, the focus of these latter months will be to showcase the impressive diversity of species, and we expect to have at least 30 distinct butterflies represented at any one time during the exhibit.

Adding to the vast butterfly display are our colorful South American dart frogs, which have become an exciting component of our exhibit as of late. While the frogs may be hard to find at times, our volunteers can usually locate their hiding spots and point them out to guests. Notice

also the lush plant life surrounding the exhibit—we have an exceptional display of orchids and bromeliads, as well as some more uncommon species, including Piper auritum (root beer plant), Clerodendrum philippinum (cashmere bouquet) and the Amorphophallus titanum (titan arum). There’s always something new and exciting to see at Butterfly Magic.

The Third Annual Growdown!

Like an HGTV show unfolding before your eyes, Growdown! at the Tucson Botanical Gardens, has gained national recognition as one of the only competitions of its kind.

From Wednesday, March 18 through Saturday, March 21, three local landscape design professionals will go head-to-head in an intense three-day competition. The challenge for these three selected designers is to transform an empty 15' x 20' plot at TBG into

“the best” Tucson pocket garden in only 24 hours. The theme, Small Gardens, Big Ideas, will emphasize creating a small, inviting and usable garden that would thrive under local desert conditions at a home with limited yard space.

This years’ selected finalists are Margaret Joplin RLA, Sonya Becker and Dara Widner MLA with Beverly Wilson RLA. Each designer will receive $1,500 to get their designs started and a 15' x 20' plot on the grounds of the Tucson Botanical Gardens to construct their designs.

The public is invited to watch the designers and their crews as they race the clock from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 18, 19 and 20, giving them exactly 24 hours over the course of three days to complete their spaces. Each designer will also be required to perform a demonstration to the public on a technique they are using in their designs. The demonstrations will take place at 11 a.m. on each day of the competition (March 18, 19 and 20).

Winning designs will receive a feature in Tucson Lifestyle’s Home & Garden Magazine, recognition on the Tucson Botanical Gardens website for a year, bragging rights and the coveted Growdown! trophy.

This event is open to the public and included in Gardens admission.

New this year: The People’s Choice Awards! This year each designer is

required to incorporate one or more water harvesting features as well as a garden art piece(s). A People’s Choice Award will be given out for both

“The Best” Water Harvesting Feature and Garden Art Piece. The public will get their chance to vote during the wrap-up event on March 21 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

NATURE CONNECTS A LEGO® EXHIBITSept. 11, 2015 through Jan. 3, 2016Open during Garden hours

Explore giant bumblebees and hummingbirds, stimulate your imagination and discover a sense of wonder through the art of play and design; the Tucson Botanical Gardens is bringing Nature Connects: LEGO® Brick Experience to the city of Tucson and State of Arizona, September 11, 2015 to January 3, 2016.

The Tucson Botanical Gardens has contracted with Nature Connects and nationally known, certified LEGO® artist, Sean Kenney to install 13 astounding LEGO® brick sculptures depicting plants and animals throughout the Gardens. The sculptures are built with over 500,000 LEGO® bricks, some weighing more than 500 pounds. As part of the four-month- long exhibit, guests willnot only learn about the natural world through education-al inter-pretation and onsite activities, but will be able to express their own creativity through a LEGO® design competi-

tion, an Express YourselfPlayroom for the young and the young at heart, and view dozens of nature- inspired “Build Your Own Creation” LEGO® sculptures created by Arizona LEGO® clubs and residents.

Bringing an exhibit of this size to our community is a major undertaking and cash investment for the Tucson Botanical Gardens. In order to make this exhibit possible, commu-nity sponsorships along with a small admission fee—less than the price of a burger and soft drink—will be charged to members until the exhibit closes on January 3, 2016.

Ways to Give Back

Did you know, you can double your contribution to Tucson Botanical Gardens with corporate matching gifts?

What are corporate matching gift programs?Matching gift programs are charitable giving programs set up by corporations in which the company matches donations made by employees to eligible nonprofit organizations. For example, if a donor works for Bank of America and donates $250 to TBG, Bank of America will “double the donation” by writing a check for $250 to the same organization.

How many companies match employee donations?Matching gift programs are offered by companies across the world. In fact, about 65% of Fortune 500 companies (and many others) match employee donations!

That means millions of individuals work for or retired from companies that match donations from employees.

How to I find out if my company will match my donation? It’s easy! Just call your company’s human resource department or look on their website for matching gifts programs. Print off the matching gift form and include it with your donation to the Gardens. That’s it.

For more information on giving to the Tucson Botanical Gardens or if you have questions about matching gifts, please call Katherine at 520-326-9686 ext. 25 or email [email protected]

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS

PLANT THE FINAL SEED MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGEAs of January 31, $214,238 was raised in cash and pledges, but $88,762 of the $300,000 challenge remains to be raised.

The Tucson Botanical Gardens wants to announce the renewed opportunity to help us reach our Plant the Final Seed Matching Gift Challenge by sharing this message from our generous Matching Gift Challenge Donor:

“Congratulations on coming so close to meeting our challenge match to the Gardens. In recognition of the hard work and outpour of support by your members, volunteers, Board and staff, my family and I are pleased to extend our pledge deadline. We have confidence in your continued success and are proud to be a part of helping to create this lifetime legacy for Tucson and the Tucson Botanical Gardens.”

This deadline extension (to June 1) provides a limited but unprecedented opportunity for you to help us meet this $300,000 challenge.

Funds raised on this timeline will allow us to complete the Visitor Center by fall 2015—just in time to open the Gardens’ newest traveling exhibit: Nature Connects. An exhibit that will attract thousands of visitors from all over Arizona and beyond!

We’re building more than just four walls. We’re building a place of inspiration for all of Tucson! Every day our members and Garden guests comment on the impact the Tucson Botanical Gardens has had on their lives. From a young child learning how to grow healthy food, grandparents who are exploring and sharing moments, to a homeowner who is learning how to plan, design and install desert appropriate landscaping. Your contribution now will help us advance our mission.

Thank you for supporting the Gardens’ mission and the Plant the Final Seed Campaign. Remember, the deadline is June 1, 2015—to make your donation or pledge, please visit www.razoo.com/story/plantthefinalseed
