SEVERE WOUNDS1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Control bleeding by applying direct pressure on wound with a sterile dressing. If blood soaks

through, do not remove first dressing, add additional dressings on top. This will speed clotting.3. If fracture or neck/back injuries are not suspected, elevate injured area.4. If bleeding continues, apply firm pressure at appropriate pressure point (femoral arteries-groin area,

brachial arteries-inside upper arm). 5. Apply pressure bandage if needed over dressings already on the wound.6. Do not attempt to remove impaled objects. Bandage in place.

MINOR WOUNDS1. Wash minor wounds that are not bleeding severely with soap and water.2. Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment to the wound.3. Apply a clean dressing.

HEAD INJURIESSigns & Symptoms: Wound of scalp or skull, blood or clear fluid draining from nose and/or ears,lowered level of responsiveness, deformity of skull, bruising around eyes or ears, nausea and vomiting,shallow or irregular breathing.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Immobilize the head and neck. Do not move the patient.3. Do not attempt to stop bleeding or draining from ears or nose.4. A head injury may also indicate a neck injury. Treat neck, head and body as one unit.5. Watch for vomiting and keep airway clear.

SIMPLE FRACTURESSigns & Symptoms: Deformity, swelling, discoloration, pain and tenderness.1. Do not move patient except in case of life threatening danger.2. Call 911 or local EMS providers.3. If EMS is not immediately available, ice or cold packs may help to reduce pain and swelling.4. If you must transport the patient, splint or immobilize fractured limbs in the position found.5. Continue to check for proper circulation and sensation and loosen splint if either are impaired or

decreased.

OPEN OR COMPOUND FRACTURES Signs & Symptoms: Skin is broken and bleeding, bone may be visible.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Control bleeding, but do not elevate area. 3. Keep a close eye on circulation.4. Do not apply cold packs.5. Continually recheck circulation.6. Provide care for shock.7. Monitor airway, breathing and circulation.

DISLOCATION, SPRAIN OR STRAIN1. Check circulation and sensation below point of dislocation or sprain. If either are impaired, call for

help. Phone 911 or your local EMS providers.2. Affix splint to injured area or otherwise immobilize the area in a position of comfort.3. Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and pain and recheck circulation.4. Transport patient to a medical facility for treatment.5. Note that elbow and knee dislocations are emergency cases, as there is a high potential for nerve

damage.

HEART ATTACKSigns & Symptoms: Pale or bluish tissue color, sweating, chest pain, pressure or squeezing sensation.Pain may spread to one or both shoulders, arms, neck, jaw or back; sweating, nausea, weakness anddizziness, shortness of breath, anxiety and denial of a problem.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately. Ask for EMS equipped with

oxygen; contact the patient’s doctor.2. Insist on rapid care. Denial may be strong, but rapid care may prevent permanent damage or death.3. Place patient in a comfortable seated or semi-seated position, loosen all tight clothing; do not let the

patient move around.4. If breathing stops, begin rescue breathing.5. If the heart stops, perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

STROKESigns & Symptoms: Weakness, loss of feeling or paralysis, usually on one side of the face orbody, difficulty with vision or movement. Slow, noisy breathing (may sound like snoring), droolingor difficulty swallowing, tissue color flushed, then pale, pulse slow and strong, becoming weakand rapid, skin feels cool and clammy to the touch, ability to speak may be impaired, loweredconsciousness level.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Allow patient to assume position of most comfort.3. If patient is unconscious, place on the affected side in the recovery position (on the side with

legs bent, bottom arm under head).4. Continue monitoring airway, breathing and circulation until help arrives. Be extra vigilant to

keep airway open; patient may have difficulty breathing due to paralysis and lowered con-sciousness level.

SHOCKSigns & Symptoms: Pale or bluish tissue color, moist, clammy skin, shivering, rapid, weakpulse, shallow, labored or noisy breathing, anxiety, nausea and vomiting, thirst, mental confusionor restlessness. 1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Lay the patient down. Position according to injury. If head, neck, spine or leg fractures are not

present, lay the patient on their back and elevate the feet and legs 8˝ to 12˝. If a head, neck,spine or leg fractures are suspected, do not move the patient unless extreme danger is pres-ent.

3. If the patient has trouble breathing, place the person in an elevated position, using blankets orother objects to raise the head and back for easier breathing.

4. Help the patient maintain a normal body temperature. If cold, warm the patient by puttingblankets underneath as well as around the body. Do not overheat. If too warm, provideshade, loosen clothing.

5. Monitor airway, breathing and circulation at all times. Do not underestimate the deadly poten-tial of shock; it can be fatal.

BURNS1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Relieve pain and prevent contamination using the following methods:

First degree or second degree burns with closed blisters:A. Wrap with a cooling burn gel compress or flush with cool water until pain subsides.B. Apply loose, moist, sterile dressings & bandage.Third degree burns (full thickness burns) or burns with open blisters:A. Apply loose, dry, sterile dressing & bandage.B. Treat for shock.

HEAT STROKESymptoms: Hot, red skin; very small pupils; very high body temperature (up to 1050F). If patientwas previously sweating from heavy exercise, skin may be wet. Otherwise, skin is hot and dry.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Give nothing by mouth.3. Move patient to cooler place.4. Cool the patient fast by whatever method is available, such as drenching with a garden hose,

fanning and using a cool bath or wrapping cold, wet sheets around the body.5. Treat for shock.

HEAT EXHAUSTIONSymptoms: Cool, pale and moist skin, heavy sweating, dilated pupils, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting. Body temperature will be near normal.1. Move person into a cooler place and call 911 or local EMS providers.2. Treat for shock.3. Loosen clothing, cool patient by fanning and applying cold packs, wet towels or sheets.4. If patient is conscious and can tolerate fluids, provide about 8 oz. of water every 15 minutes.

FAINTING1. Keep patient lying down with feet raised 8˝ to 12˝ until recovery is complete.2. Loosen any tight clothing and keep crowds away. Maintain open airway.3. Bathe face gently with cool water, but do not drench the patient’s face with water.4. Unless recovery is prompt, call 911 or local EMS providers.

To besafe, you must assume that all patients are infectious and use appropriate barriers such as gloves, CPR masks, eye shields and/or gowns asindicated. Avoid direct and indirect skin or mucous membrane contact with blood and body fluids and avoid punctures from needles, brokenglass and other sharp objects. When you remove protective barriers, do it carefully so that blood and body fluids do not contact your skin ormucous membranes, and wash hands immediately after removal for at least two minutes.

OSHA estimates that 5.6 million workers inthe health care industry and relatedoccupations are at risk of occupationalexposure to bloodborne pathogens,including human immunodeficiency virus(HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis Cvirus (HCV), and others. All occupationalexposure to blood or other potentiallyinfectious materials (OPIM) place workers atrisk for infection with bloodborne pathogens.

An accidental sharps injury, such as aneedlestick or cut from a scalpel are commonways to contract an infection. Studies showthat as many as one-third of all sharps injuriesoccur during disposal. The Centers forDisease Control and Prevention (CDC)estimates that 62 to 88 percent of sharpsinjuries can be prevented simply by usingsafer medical equipment, such as anapproved biohazard disposal container.

DID YOU KNOW?Unlike most occupational injuries, there is no visible evidence ofnoise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is not traumatic and oftengoes unnoticed when it first occurs. Noise-induced hearing lossaccumulates over time, its effects realized long after the damagehas been done. NIHL is permanent and irreversible. Withproper protection, however, it is also 100% preventable.

According to the World Health Organization, noise-inducedhearing loss is the most common permanent and preventableoccupational illness in the world. UNDERSTANDING HEARING PROTECTION

What is NRR?Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is the measurement, in decibels, of howwell a hearing protector reduces noise, as specified by the EnvironmentalProtection Agency. The higher the number, the greater the noisereduction.

What are decibels?Intensity of sound is measured in decibels (dB). The scale runs from thefaintest sound the human ear can detect, which is labeled 0 dB, to over180 dB, the noise at a rocket pad during launch. Decibels are measuredlogarithmically. This means that as decibel intensity increases by units of10, each increase is 10 times the lower figure. Thus, 20 decibels is 10times the intensity of 10 decibels, and 30 decibels is 100 times as intenseas 10 decibels.

Powdered latex gloves have corn starchpowder that makes the gloves easier to donand remove, though more likely to cause alatex allergic reaction. Scientific evidence supports the link betweenglove powder and the occurence of latexallergies. Glove powder has been shown tobind with free natural rubber latex protein inlatex gloves, becoming airborne during glovedonning and removal. Powder-free latex gloves, as a result of themanufacturing process, have a much lowerresidual latex protein content than powderedgloves, making them less likely to cause a latexreaction. Also, powder-free gloves arepreferred for use in specific environmentsthat cannot be contaminated with powder(e.g., electronic assembly plants, laboratories,crime labs, etc.).

Application. Protective equipment,including personal protective equipmentfor eyes, face, head and extremities,protective clothing, respiratory devices, andprotective shields and barriers, shall beprovided, used, and maintained in asanitary and reliable condition wherever it isnecessary by reason of hazards of processesor environment, chemical hazards,radiological hazards, or mechanical irritantsencountered in a manner capable ofcausing injury or impairment in the functionof any part of the body through absorption,inhalation or physical contact.

EYE WASH AND EYE STATIONS (See Pages16-17), OSHA CODE OF FEDERALREGULATION 29 CFR 1910.151 (c)

Where the eyes or body of any person maybe exposed to injurious corrosive materials,suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shallbe provided within the work area for immediate emergency use.

However, the employer could be cited for a violation of the general dutyclause if the most reasonable predictable injury from such exposure isserious in nature, regardless if the product is corrosive or not. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION (See Pages 38-41), OSHA CODE OF FEDERALREGULATION 29 CFR 1910.134 (a)(2)

Respirators shall be provided by the employer when such equipment isnecessary to protect the health of the employee. The employer shallprovide the respirators which are applicable and suitable for the purposeintended.

EYE AND FACE PROTECTION (See Pages 22-32), OSHA CODE OF FEDERALREGULATION 29 CFR 1910.133 (a)

Protective eye and face equipment shall be required where there is areasonable probability of injury that can be prevented by such equipment.In such cases, employers shall make conveniently available a type ofprotector suitable for the work to be preformed, and employees shall usesuch protectors. Suitable eye protectors shall be provided where machinesor operations present the hazard of flying objects, glare, liquids, injuriousradiation, or a combination of these hazards.

HEARING PROTECTION (See Pages 43-47), OSHA CODE OF FEDERALREGULATIONS 29 CFR 1910.95 (d) (i)

When information indicates that any employee’s exposure may equal orexceed an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 decibels, the employer shall

develop and implement a monitoring program.The sampling strategy shall be designed to identifyemployees for inclusion in the hearingconservation program and to enable the properselection of hearing protectors.

HAZARD COMMUNICATION (See Pages 62,69),OSHA ARTICLE 89, SECTION 32M (b)

The employer shall provide an employee trainingand education program to inform employees ofthe existence and content of the law; the hazardcommunication methods used by the employer;the right an employee may exercise under the law,and the procedure by which an employee mayobtain a chemical information list and materialsafety data sheet.

OXYGEN EQUIPMENT-EMERGENCY & (OTC) OVERTHE COUNTER USE (See Page 64), FDACOMPLIANCE POLICY GUIDE 7124.16

Oxygen equipment intended for emergency usecan be marketed for OTC distribution, but must be capable of providing aminimum flow rate of 6 liters of oxygen per minute for at least 15 minutes.The labeling for emergency oxygen for OTC use may not contain referencesto heart attacks, strokes, shock or any other medical condition amenable todiagnosis or treatment only by a licensed practitioner. Oxygen unitsproviding a flow rate of less than 6 liters per minute or for a period less than15 minutes and labeled for emergency use are regarded as adulterated andmisbranded. If the units are not intended for emergency use and provideless than 6 liters/minute or are labeled for human use for other thanemergency use, such units are regarded as prescription devices.

CPR AND FIRST AID TRAINING (See Page 70), OSHA CODE OF FEDERALREGULATION 29 CFR 1910.151 (b)

In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity (3 minutes)to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, aperson or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid.

BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS (See Pages 18-20, 66), OSHA CODE OFFEDERAL REGULATION 29 CFR 1910.1030 (d)

Employers shall protect their employees from the hazards of Bloodbornepathogens and comply with this standard through the use of universalprecautions, engineering controls, work practice controls, personalprotective equipment (gloves, gowns, face shields, CPR mask, etc...), properhousekeeping (clean up kits, etc...), and handling of regulated waste.

SEVERE WOUNDS1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Control bleeding by applying direct pressure on wound with a sterile dressing. If blood soaks

through, do not remove first dressing, add additional dressings on top. This will speed clotting.3. If fracture or neck/back injuries are not suspected, elevate injured area.4. If bleeding continues, apply firm pressure at appropriate pressure point (femoral arteries-groin area,

brachial arteries-inside upper arm). 5. Apply pressure bandage if needed over dressings already on the wound.6. Do not attempt to remove impaled objects. Bandage in place.

MINOR WOUNDS1. Wash minor wounds that are not bleeding severely with soap and water.2. Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment to the wound.3. Apply a clean dressing.

HEAD INJURIESSigns & Symptoms: Wound of scalp or skull, blood or clear fluid draining from nose and/or ears,lowered level of responsiveness, deformity of skull, bruising around eyes or ears, nausea and vomiting,shallow or irregular breathing.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Immobilize the head and neck. Do not move the patient.3. Do not attempt to stop bleeding or draining from ears or nose.4. A head injury may also indicate a neck injury. Treat neck, head and body as one unit.5. Watch for vomiting and keep airway clear.

SIMPLE FRACTURESSigns & Symptoms: Deformity, swelling, discoloration, pain and tenderness.1. Do not move patient except in case of life threatening danger.2. Call 911 or local EMS providers.3. If EMS is not immediately available, ice or cold packs may help to reduce pain and swelling.4. If you must transport the patient, splint or immobilize fractured limbs in the position found.5. Continue to check for proper circulation and sensation and loosen splint if either are impaired or

decreased.

OPEN OR COMPOUND FRACTURES Signs & Symptoms: Skin is broken and bleeding, bone may be visible.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Control bleeding, but do not elevate area. 3. Keep a close eye on circulation.4. Do not apply cold packs.5. Continually recheck circulation.6. Provide care for shock.7. Monitor airway, breathing and circulation.

DISLOCATION, SPRAIN OR STRAIN1. Check circulation and sensation below point of dislocation or sprain. If either are impaired, call for

help. Phone 911 or your local EMS providers.2. Affix splint to injured area or otherwise immobilize the area in a position of comfort.3. Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and pain and recheck circulation.4. Transport patient to a medical facility for treatment.5. Note that elbow and knee dislocations are emergency cases, as there is a high potential for nerve

damage.

HEART ATTACKSigns & Symptoms: Pale or bluish tissue color, sweating, chest pain, pressure or squeezing sensation.Pain may spread to one or both shoulders, arms, neck, jaw or back; sweating, nausea, weakness anddizziness, shortness of breath, anxiety and denial of a problem.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately. Ask for EMS equipped with

oxygen; contact the patient’s doctor.2. Insist on rapid care. Denial may be strong, but rapid care may prevent permanent damage or death.3. Place patient in a comfortable seated or semi-seated position, loosen all tight clothing; do not let the

patient move around.4. If breathing stops, begin rescue breathing.5. If the heart stops, perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

STROKESigns & Symptoms: Weakness, loss of feeling or paralysis, usually on one side of the face orbody, difficulty with vision or movement. Slow, noisy breathing (may sound like snoring), droolingor difficulty swallowing, tissue color flushed, then pale, pulse slow and strong, becoming weakand rapid, skin feels cool and clammy to the touch, ability to speak may be impaired, loweredconsciousness level.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Allow patient to assume position of most comfort.3. If patient is unconscious, place on the affected side in the recovery position (on the side with

legs bent, bottom arm under head).4. Continue monitoring airway, breathing and circulation until help arrives. Be extra vigilant to

keep airway open; patient may have difficulty breathing due to paralysis and lowered con-sciousness level.

SHOCKSigns & Symptoms: Pale or bluish tissue color, moist, clammy skin, shivering, rapid, weakpulse, shallow, labored or noisy breathing, anxiety, nausea and vomiting, thirst, mental confusionor restlessness. 1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Lay the patient down. Position according to injury. If head, neck, spine or leg fractures are not

present, lay the patient on their back and elevate the feet and legs 8˝ to 12˝. If a head, neck,spine or leg fractures are suspected, do not move the patient unless extreme danger is pres-ent.

3. If the patient has trouble breathing, place the person in an elevated position, using blankets orother objects to raise the head and back for easier breathing.

4. Help the patient maintain a normal body temperature. If cold, warm the patient by puttingblankets underneath as well as around the body. Do not overheat. If too warm, provideshade, loosen clothing.

5. Monitor airway, breathing and circulation at all times. Do not underestimate the deadly poten-tial of shock; it can be fatal.

BURNS1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Relieve pain and prevent contamination using the following methods:

First degree or second degree burns with closed blisters:A. Wrap with a cooling burn gel compress or flush with cool water until pain subsides.B. Apply loose, moist, sterile dressings & bandage.Third degree burns (full thickness burns) or burns with open blisters:A. Apply loose, dry, sterile dressing & bandage.B. Treat for shock.

HEAT STROKESymptoms: Hot, red skin; very small pupils; very high body temperature (up to 1050F). If patientwas previously sweating from heavy exercise, skin may be wet. Otherwise, skin is hot and dry.1. Call for help. Phone 911 or local EMS providers immediately.2. Give nothing by mouth.3. Move patient to cooler place.4. Cool the patient fast by whatever method is available, such as drenching with a garden hose,

fanning and using a cool bath or wrapping cold, wet sheets around the body.5. Treat for shock.

HEAT EXHAUSTIONSymptoms: Cool, pale and moist skin, heavy sweating, dilated pupils, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting. Body temperature will be near normal.1. Move person into a cooler place and call 911 or local EMS providers.2. Treat for shock.3. Loosen clothing, cool patient by fanning and applying cold packs, wet towels or sheets.4. If patient is conscious and can tolerate fluids, provide about 8 oz. of water every 15 minutes.

FAINTING1. Keep patient lying down with feet raised 8˝ to 12˝ until recovery is complete.2. Loosen any tight clothing and keep crowds away. Maintain open airway.3. Bathe face gently with cool water, but do not drench the patient’s face with water.4. Unless recovery is prompt, call 911 or local EMS providers.

HOLD IT! BEFORE YOU OFFER HELP...Contact with body fluids such as blood or vomit can put you at risk for HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B & C, and other bloodborne pathogens. To besafe, you must assume that all patients are infectious and use appropriate barriers such as gloves, CPR masks, eye shields and/or gowns asindicated. Avoid direct and indirect skin or mucous membrane contact with blood and body fluids and avoid punctures from needles, brokenglass and other sharp objects. When you remove protective barriers, do it carefully so that blood and body fluids do not contact your skin ormucous membranes, and wash hands immediately after removal for at least two minutes.
