Dear Glenwood Families,
Happy November to all of you! October has always been one of my favorite months but it is even more so now that we have our One School, One Book initiative in October. Reading should be joyful. Learning should be joyful. And, having the opportunity to get caught up in a mystery with a smart little hamster named Humphrey has made this such a JOYFUL OCTOBER for all of us! Thank you to all of you for your commitment to reading and enjoying Mysteries According to Humphrey together. We love looking at the pictures that many have posted on the GSCA Facebook page. Please plan on coming to spend a night celebrating Humphrey’s
adventures with us on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:30. It is our culminatingcelebration as part of One School, One Book and we want to pack Glenwood with all of our student and adult readers.
At our Glenwood Gathering on November 2nd, some of our StudentAmbassadors helped me to review our Glenwood Expectations with all of our students. We have several student clubs that provide opportunities for our fourth and fifth grade students to act as leaders. In this month’s newsletter, you will find a list of all of our Student Ambassador Clubs and the members in each so that you know what it is that our ambassadors are doing.
We talk often here about our goal of providing authentic learning opportunities for our students, and about how to do that in ways that prepare them for life. Independence and ownership are attributes that we want to foster, and the Student Ambassador Program is another avenue that we take to help students get there. Ultimately, Glenwood Elementary belongs to the students. It is their school. So the more opportunities they have to take ownership of it and make it a great place to be, the better.
On a different note, just a reminder that a couple of years ago we made the decision in Vestal to transition to three reports per year at the elementary level instead of four. Your child’s first report card of the year will be coming home with students on
Friday, November 30th. We have a half day and a full day set aside for Parent TeacherConferences in December. Those dates are on the calendar at the back of this newsletter. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about the report cards and how they will be distributed this year.
My wish for all of you this November is a happy and healthy Thanksgiving….filled with delicious food, pleasant memories, and opportunities to show the people you love how much you appreciate them.

STEAM Lab Fun - Grades 3-5STEAM Lab Fun - Grades 3-5 Glenwood’s third, fourth and fifth graders have been busy
during their time in the STEAM Lab this year!
MINDSET: Classes watched short videos and did activities to prove that ... - Our brains grow the most when they are challenged - mistakes are proof that
our brain is growing! - It’s important to believe in ourselves and know that no one is born with a
“math brain”. We grow our brains through hard work! TEAMWORK: Each class played games to help learn how to be a great teammate - they learned that listening to each other, communicating what you want to do, and planning together are all important to making their their sTEAM time the best it could be!
BREAKOUT BOXES: Classes practiced teamwork, struggling through challenges what it means to have a growth mindset to solve all the clues and open the locks together. Every group opened the box in under 30 minutes!!
MEASUREMENT: This month, all 3rd-5th grade classes have worked with measurement. Last week we used our STEAM time to explore some multiplicative relationships and use triple beam balances to measure objects. “If one blocks weighs _ grams, how much would 10 blocks weigh?”
