As we celebrate our 71st year, we are asking you to help continue to provide the finest services and facilities for our elderly.

We must meet the increasing demands of higher costs and the ever growing needs of residents who are older, frailer, and in need of much more financial assistance. The resident’s care needs

are more specialized, more intense, more complicated and they are more compromised. The question remains: How do we provide the funding for the majority of our residents?

Through the years, Seven Acres has been able to meet its financial needs through the remarkable support of the community. Residents and their families have borne their share of costs so long as their resources allowed. Federal and state health care funding have not kept pace with inflationary costs, and still Seven Acres remains deeply committed to providing compassionate, professional care, regardless of the resident’s ability to pay. Over 80% of our residents are so ill and indigent that they qualify for the state Medicaid program, which under funds Seven Acres by $33,000 a year for each Medicaid resident. This translates into a $8 million annual loss for the Home. It is only through the generous support of our friends and community partners that we are able to offset the significant cost of care that Medicaid does not cover.

Making sure we have a warm, protective environment for frail elderly today is like buying insurance that will benefit generations for years to come. As a non-profit agency, our community responsibility can only continue to be met through your philanthropic support.

Seven Acres is not just a facility, it truly is a campus of care and your Jewish Home. The 2014 Seven Acres Friends Campaign comes to a close on August 31, 2014. Please make your gift for the 2014 campaign in the enclosed donation envelope, or save a stamp and make your gift online at www.sevenacres.org. For more information call Seth Malin at 713-778-5781.

The Seven Acres Campus has played host to scores of visitors from the health care professions over the years. This fall a group of Nurse Practitioners from the Netherlands spent the better part of a day with the Seven Acres and Medallion senior staff to learn more about long term care for the elderly in Texas and the U.S. In addition two Canadian researchers visited and observed with the Seven Acres social workers late in 2013.

This January, a delegation of municipal government officials from the City of Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, China, near Shanghai spent an afternoon touring and meeting with Seven Acres staff to learn about eldercare services as they are practiced here. Led by the Honorable Guan, Aiguo, mayor of Kunshan, the delegation of high ranking government officers came to specifically focus on developing business opportunities in health care between Houston and the city of Kunshan, China. Their request was to visit the Texas Medical Center and a long-term care nursing facility. The meeting was arranged locally through the Greater Houston Partnership who had previously led a delegation from the U.S. to Kunshan in 2012 that promoted the health industry and the city of Houston.

Dignitaries from Kunshan China Visit Seven Acres Campus

In the Health Care system of the Netherlands, long term care facilities rely on registered nurses who have advanced training as nurse practitioners to provide much of the direct patient care. In an unusual foreign exchange program, a group of nurse practitioner (NP) students who are studying for a Master’s Degree in Advanced Nursing at Rotterdam University in the Netherlands spent some time on the Seven Acres campus observing American geriatric long term care.

The NP students spent a day touring and meeting with staff from Seven Acres and Seven Acres’ medical provider, Geriatric Associates of America (GAA). As part of their training, four of the students made their own presentations to the group, primarily directed to their American nurse practitioner counterparts.

Lillian Maas RN, MS is the International Coordinator/Faculty member for the Rotterdam University Master’s in Advanced Nursing Program who arranged the international exchange for the NP students. She is also a native Houstonian. “I am very proud of the big Texas welcome that Houstonians gave to our students,” she

Members of the Chinese delegation visited the Medallion and enjoyed discussing the game of Mah Jongg with several of the residents.

The “meet and greet” portion of the afternoon consisted of a welcome from Mr. Shen and then an introduction to the facility by the Seven Acres staff, including CEO Malcolm Slatko, CAO Pat Chandler, Administrator of Health Services Carolyn Bell, Director of Recreational and Volunteer Services Sue Cororve and Director of Community Relations Jane Shapiro. Much of the discussion was conducted in Mandarin with translator assistance. The Seven Acres administrators each explained what their respective departments do, how the facility is structured and how care is provided.

After a question and answer session, the delegation was able to tour both Seven Acres and The Medallion. They were extremely impressed with the whole campus as well as the programs and staffing. “Seven Acres is the best facility we have ever visited,” remarked Mayor Guan. “The service is well-organized and well-equipped, and the atmosphere is of exceptional quality. The various activities coordinated by the staff were impressive, particularly the Mah Jongg game. The staff and management obviously take great pride in their work and serve the elderly with their heart and soul.”

remarked upon her return to the Netherlands. “It is important that we all learn from each other. My students realized that we share similar problems and challenges. Learning and sharing from their American colleagues offers them another perspect ive on a similar problem. Sometimes you get stuck in doing the same thing and by looking into someone else’s kitchen,

you gain new recipes and techniques. Bottom line, we are more similar than different! We are firm believers of once you go global, you never go back! Our students are so different and more curious to learn from other cultures and countries. This international program’s goal is not just to make internationally-oriented nurses, but globally aware citizens. Thanks again for a wonderful experience!! And greetings from Holland!

L’Dor V’ Dor - Generation to Generation

Monday, March 3 was a special Rosh Chodesh – the beginning of the Hebrew month of Adar II, the month that falls after the leap year month of Adar I on the Hebrew calendar. As a special Tikkun Olam project, the third grade students from Beth Yeshurun Day School (BYDS) traveled to Seven Acres that day to lead the Rosh Chodesh prayer service for the residents directly following the regular Seven Acres morning minyan. The thirty-six students began by singing two songs, Mishenichnas Adar and Bou Yeladim, to express the mitzvah of being happy as Adar is considered a lucky and happy month. The musical portion of the morning was led by BYDS music teacher Dora Lee Grinberg and accompanied by Betty Gorme on the piano.

Following the songs, the students led a full Rosh Chodesh morning service. “The students did a beautiful job of leading the Hallel prayer,” remarked Sharon Knafo, BYDS Judaic Studies Director. “It was moving to see the residents joining the singing and the prayers, and feel the cross-generation connection between our future generation and the seniors in the room. The event reached its

Once a month during the school year, fifth grade students from the Shlenker School at Congregation Beth Israel travel to Seven Acres to spend one and one half hours interacting with the residents. On most visits the students and residents play board games, however, occasionally they participate in an art project or even sing for the residents. At the end of each visit, the fifth graders serve refreshments and talk with the residents sitting at their table.

“The Shlenker students are a regular part of our volunteer friendly visitor program,” remarked Sue Cororve, Director of Recreation and Volunteer Services at Seven Acres. “This program between Seven Acres and Shlenker has been ongoing for over twenty-five years. We still hear from young adults in the community who have lasting memories of visiting Seven Acres with their fifth grade class. Many have come back and volunteered as adults. We know that the residents really look forward to these visits and we hope that the young students go home with a greater appreciation of the elderly and a feeling of satisfaction that they made someone’s day a little brighter.”

One of the fifth graders, Max Rothfeder, wrote an essay about his experience volunteering at Seven Acres and submitted it to the Houston Texans organization, the Toro’s Kids Club. “I have volunteered at Seven Acres,” Max wrote in his essay. “Every time I walk in more residents keep coming in. They love being with kids, It really makes their day. We go in and sit down with any resident. I know that no matter what to be positive. Even if they are a little deaf we try to speak loud and clear. Every time we go we play a game. I played Sorry and a trivia game with two residents. They always want to join in. This time we went we did something special. We are preparing for Grandparents Day. We each wrote a poem about grandparents. I shared mine. As soon as I was done everyone clapped. It felt really good knowing that I put a smile on their faces. I can’t wait to go back.” Max, the Seven Acres residents can’t wait until you and your classmates come back again either!

climax when the residents were asked to bless the children with the Priestly Blessing, Birkat Kohanim. The students then stood next to each resident as the seniors rested the hands on the students’ heads, and the connection was made, both spiritually and socially. As the holiday of Purim is coming in the next week, we cherish the values we learn from our elders, and fulfill the commitment of giving honor to our elderly- V’Hadarta Pnei Zaken (Vayikra 19, 32).”

a symbol of distinction

Every Tuesday afternoon, a small group of residents gather at The Medallion to socialize while they work on a shared knitting project. The group was organized by family member Sue Herman as a way to spend time with her mom, Nettie Kraus, and also do something that involves the other residents. Ms. Herman facilitates the group with her friend and volunteer Harriet Schorr. “As a group we chose to knit squares that will be sent overseas to be sewn together into blankets and distributed to a children’s charity in Southern Africa,” Ms. Herman remarked when asked about the goal of the group. “It’s also a great way to do something as a group while we visit with each other.”

The charity, called Knit a Square, collects knitted 8”x 8” squares from volunteers s from all over the world who mail them to the organization offices in South Africa. Knit a Square volunteers sew the squares together into blankets to be distributed to needy African children, many of whom are AIDS orphans. The organization receives between 2500 and 5000 squares a week in the mail. The volunteers from The Medallion have just sent off their first mailing of 24 squares.

“The knitting group is open to all residents at The Medallion and all of our participants already know how to knit or crochet,” Ms. Herman continued. “While we come each week to work on a project for charity, we also come as a way to be together to sit and talk or listen to music while we work. It gives me an opportunity to be at The Medallion to do something nice for the residents while also visiting with my mother.”

Resident Doris Perlberg looks forward to meeting with the other “knitters” every week. “It is a lovely, congenial group. We knit and chat and feel that we are doing something useful. And we all enjoy ourselves.”

Isaac Barrocas, Annette Betz, Robin Silver, Jane Shapiro, Seth Malin, and Carol Burks represented The Medallion and Seven Acres in the fourth annual Houston Kosher Chili Cook-off.

Residents of The Medallion ate hamentashen, received mishloach manot, and attended parties as they spent a joyous few days celebrating the holiday of Purim. The Megillah was read on Purim

morning. The week before the holiday, Shlenker School fifth grade students, dressed in costume, brought mishloach manot baskets to residents at both facilities. At the annual Purim party residents elected the traditional royal couple. This year “Queen” Naomi Starr and “King” Sigmund Jucker were elected by their fellow residents and crowned during the party. During the week of the holiday caterer Jennie Tavor brought her delicious Hamentaschen for everyone at The Medallion to enjoy.

For the past two decades, volunteers from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Speakers Committee have celebrated Go Texan Day at Seven Acres, enabling the residents to join in the citywide rodeo spirit. Longtime Go Texan Day volunteers Marilyn Zwirek and Rodeo Clown Steve “Stripes” Toomey were on hand as well as award winning western cloggers Buncy Nemec and Bill Sharber who performed their unique form of western dance. Singer Donna B., the “Ebony Cowgirl”, performed country hits. Speakers Committee Chair Greg Rincon was also present to give a special “howdy” to his mom, resident Gloria Rincon.
