Homeland Lyrics: Tatsuyuki Takano Music: Teiichi Okano Back in the mountains I knew as a child Fish filled the rivers and rabbits ran wild Memories, I carry these wherever I may roam I hear it calling me, my homeland Mother and Father, how I miss you now How are my friends I lost touch with somehow? When the rain falls or the wind blows I feel so alone I hear it calling me, my homeland I've got this dream and it keeps me away When it comes true I'm going back there someday Crystal waters, mighty mountains blue as emerald stone I hear it calling me, my homeland

Marek Szpakiewicz

Polish-born cellist Marek Szpakiewicz has been described by Yo-Yo Ma as an artist whose “energy, motivation, earnestness and generosity of spirit are evident through his work.” Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Corigliano stated, “(Szpakiewicz’s) performance of my ‘Fancy on a Bach Air’ is absolutely gorgeous.” Szpakiewicz gained rapid recognition in the United States when he won the 16th Mu Phi

Epsilon International Competition in 2003. His work, as a soloist with various orchestras in Europe and in the United States, has drawn praise from critics, who have described him as “a gifted player,” “with expansive vision and immense authority,” and “no technical limitation.” Polish and American radio stations have broadcasted his live performances, including the one-hour special program dedicated solely to his music on KUSC-Los Angeles, the largest non-profit classical music station in the country. British Strad Magazine comments on Szpakiewicz’s live recording of Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo as “remarkably accurate realisation of the score.” He began cello lessons at the age of six in Lublin, Poland. In his early years, he studied with Ryszard Losakiewicz and Stanislaw Firlej. He later studied with Stephen Kates at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. Szpakiewicz completed his doctorate degree under the tutelage of late Eleonore Schoenfeld at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. He also studied with such distinguished cellists as Daniil Shafran, Lynn Harrell, and Siegfried Palm. He currently teaches at Azusa Pacific University. Szpakiewicz has also contributed his talent to film orchestration as a collaborator with Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Among the scores he has worked on, the music for the critically acclaimed movie “Finding Neverland,” received the 77th Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2005. He has been also featured as a soloist in such films as “Hachi” starring Richard Gere and “Leonie” directed by Hisako Matsui. In March 2008, Szpakiewicz earned permanent residency from the U.S. government as an “Extraordinary Ability Artist.” The title means

that he has “sustained national or international acclaim and the achievements have been recognized” in his field, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. J iayi Shi

She works extensively with the internationally renowned violinist Midori, and made her New York recital debut with Midori in March 2004. Shi has given recitals in such notable venues as Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco and St. Luke’s Hall in London, England. In addition to numerous chamber performances, Shi often plays solo piano

recitals in North America and in her native China; upcoming performances will take her to several countries in Europe. She has often collaborated with world famous musicians, including Martin Chalifour and Ryu Goto. Born in Shanghai, Jiayi Shi began playing the piano at age 4. Early on, she was accepted to the Prepatory Division of Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied there until graduating from the Music Middle School affiliated with Shanghai Conservatory when she was granted a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin. Having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Piano at the University of Texas, Shi continued her education the Eastman School of Music in New York. She graduated from Eastman with both a Master’s degree and the Performance Certificate in Piano. She also received advanced degrees in Piano Accompanying and is currently finishing up her Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from Manhattan School of Music in New York. About 2011 Japan Relief Fund

On March 11, 2011, the Japan America Society of Southern California created the 2011 Japan Relief Fund, a disaster relief and recovery fund to aid victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami waves. With the funds that have been generously donated so far, Japan America Society has committed $750,000 to three nonprofit organizations in Japan—Japanese Red Cross Society, Save the Children Japan, and Seikeijuku Tohoku Earthquake Fund—all on the front lines of relief and recovery work in northeastern Japan. All of your generous tax-deductible contributions go to organizations that directly help victims recover from the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami waves that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. In addition to providing support to the above-mentioned three organizations, funds will also be used to help in the longer-term recovery and reconstruction. If you would like to donate to the 2011 Japan Relief Fund, please make your check payable to "2011 Japan Relief Fund." Please include your phone number in case we need to reach you, and your email address for the purpose of sending a Donation Receipt. The Japan America Society of Southern California is a 501(c)(3) educational and charitable organization, Federal Tax ID #95–2021853. Accordingly, donations to the 2011 Japan Relief Fund should qualify for charitable contribution tax deduction. Thank you very much for your great support.
