PARISH MISSION STATEMENT “Our Savior parish is a Catholic community, fueled by the Eucharist and infused with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, committed to faith-filled worship, to outreach and welcoming for our brothers and sisters in need, to striving for Christian unity, to pursuing respect for the dignity of all hu-man life, and to building the Kingdom of God on Cody Road and beyond.”

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 12, 2017

WHERE DO I STAND?

I have regularly been lambasted on Facebook for being radically liberal. But all my life I have been someone who has desired to think with the Church. Even in my senior year at Notre Dame, the professor who taught “Senior Seminar” said two things about my essays: he spent more time on them than anyone else’s, and he was concerned I was trying too much to think “properly” rather than “authentically.” I’m glad to embrace that critique and say “Yes, thank you” to it. This reminds me of a conversation I had with a young priest and an older priest over lunch, years ago: the older priest said, “I was always regarded as middle-of-the-road, theologically; I have-n’t changed, yet now, I’m regarded as a liberal—how did this happen?” The younger priest had no answer. I suspect I know what the answer should have been.

Make no mistake: I find the direction and analysis of Pope Francis much more compatible with my pastoral approach than I have that of Pope St John Paul II or Pope [Emeritus] Benedict XVI. At least within the context of the Church itself, it seems to me (please note that this is a subjective point of view) they placed greater emphasis on fidelity to rules than on a comprehensive view of pastoral conditions that are unique: conditions that demonstrate that “one size [of rule] doesn’t fit all.” Again: make no mistake—I deeply revere Pope St John Paul II, and I have great re-spect for the intellect and humility of Pope [Emeritus] Benedict XVI. I am not deni-grating them at all. Both also showed flexibility in interesting ways: either by em-bracing married Anglican priests or by ecumenical/inter-religious outreach or in attempts to reconcile the break-away Society of St Pius X. But they came more from philosophical and theological points of view rather than from a hands-on pastoral perspective, and this is what I admire and respect in Pope Francis.

With regard to divorce and re-marriage, as just one example, I submit that there is not a priest worth his salt and with any meaningful number of years under his belt who has not realized (usually in confession) that sometimes law and reality don’t mesh so neatly, and adjustments to legal prescriptions should be made in the name of true justice. In the Church’s canon law this is called epikeia (which can be roughly translated as “The exception proves the rule”). Cases like these should not need an appeal to Rome.

The Gospel for daily Mass last week had Jesus questioning the Pharisees: “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” This is the principle by which mercy must trump “justice” (that is, legalism). I am NOT, by the way, accusing the Pharisees of that (that was Matthew’s issue, primarily). I am saying that in the recent public criticisms of Pope Francis we can see the same kind of legalism in our Church today. I am cur-rently re-reading a history of Vatican II, and it is important to note that the same sorts of complaints made against Pope Francis today are those that were made by a minority of bishops (mostly from the Curia) during Vatican II, 50 years ago. Then, the “heretical” issues were collegiality of the bishops and their ordination instead of con-secration; ecumenism; religious liberty; engagement with the modern world; Chris-tian-Jewish relations: the claim was that what Vatican II proposed (and ultimately approved, as did Pope Paul VI) would mean changes in Church teaching. When pow-er, position, privilege, and prestige are threatened, God help us all…

Some men in the Vatican’s Curia are obsessed with their status. They so want to continue to live as (and be recognized as) “princes of the Church.” Many other Curial officials are genuinely eager to serve the Church to the best of their abili-ties. And many bishops are ready and willing to be true pastors and not simply bu-reaucrats. Thank God for them. They are part of what Pope Francis has in mind for the whole Church: the Body of Christ as humble servants and merciful witnesses to Him who loves us and gives Himself for us (Galatians 2:20).

#iGiveCatholic: Our Savior Parish is participating in this campaign that is promoted by the Archdiocese of Mobile. It is a way for us to meet two long range goals: one is to purchase new chairs to place in the

sanctuary for the deacons, and the other is to have a Wi-Fi con-nect in the church so that we may live stream the Mass for our sick or homebound parishioners. There are two ways to con-tribute to our goals. The recommended way is to contribute online through the web site www.iGiveCatholic.org but if you prefer you can fill out the necessary paperwork and turn it into the office. The instructions for both methods are on the table in the back of the church. You may donate early from Novem-ber 10th through November 26th but no later than November 28th. The minimum donation is $25 which is tax deductible. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Judy Pukac’ at 251-648-3024 or [email protected].
