communities, and society.
Dow Sustainability Innovations 1
Ever since our founding in 1896, The Dow Chemical Company has
used the power of chemistry to improve human progress.
In no area is this more evident than our work on sustainability. What started with
our pioneering work to turn steam into electricity for our facilities, led to our strong
commitment to not only improve our own carbon footprint, but also to use Dow
technology to address critical global challenges facing governments around the world:
climate change, energy, food, water, transportation and infrastructure. Every day
we strive to support the economy and create social value while contributing to the
conservation of our planet.
Today, as we continue our own journey to use resources more efficiently, Dow offers
a wide range of solutions to help households, businesses and governments on their
path towards sustainability. Dow is one of the largest manufacturers worldwide of
products that save energy in homes and offices, including advanced insulation and
roof technologies. We are also using sustainable chemistry and strategic partnerships
to accelerate the availability of breakthrough alternative energy solutions. These
include our revolutionary solar shingle and the partnerships we have created to
develop advanced batteries for electric cars, plastics made from sugar cane and
carbon capture technology, to name a few.
As a sustainability leader, Dow shares the government’s vision for improving
efficiency, reducing waste, increasing use of clean energy sources, and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to new policies, evolving technology and
greater public awareness, products that are cost-effective and better for the planet
are securing their position in the marketplace. Dow’s technology innovation and
experience in greatly reducing our own footprint allows us to deliver solutions that
last longer, use less energy, require less maintenance, save money and are good for
business. In short, more sustainable.

Dow is an industry leader in building solutions, offering housewrap, air sealant, adhesive
products, roofing and complete insulation systems that are second to none. Our products help
building owners meet mandatory energy codes and voluntary rating systems that encourage
the design and construction of high-performance buildings. With a comprehensive portfolio of
sustainable products, Dow can help you meet the government’s 2020 greenhouse gas emission
reductions and 2030 net-zero-energy requirements — while also lowering energy costs.
Energy Efficient Walls, A Lower Carbon Footprint
The THERMAXTM Wall System from Dow, designed for new construction,
results in a tighter, more efficient wall assembly in commercial buildings.
THERMAXTM also enables a moisture barrier wall with fewer materials and
easier installation. With THERMAXTM, you can reduce energy consumption
and greenhouse gas emissions in offices and buildings.
Inventing the Iconic Insulation
Since its creation by a Dow chemist more than 60 years ago, STYROFOAMTM Brand Extruded
Polystyrene Insulation has been used in homes and buildings around the world, reducing
more than 250 million metric tons of CO2. Dow has proven that the zero ozone depleting
STYROFOAMTM Brand Insulation is a critical component in reducing energy loss in residential,
commercial and industrial buildings.
Buildings in the U.S. are responsible for nearly half of all energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions*
— making them a large part of our energy challenge and also a key to overcoming it. We must make gains
in building energy efficiency if we are to markedly reduce America’s energy consumption and effectively
combat climate change.
Energy Efficiency and Green Buildings
With the help of the THERMAXTM Wall System, this commercial building in Birmingham, Michigan earned LEED credits and is projected to deliver 30-40% energy savings in the first year over the original design.
Dow Sustainability Innovations 3
Major Sources of Energy Loss
Up to 50% of the energy used in most homes goes toward heating and cooling.* Even in homes that are well insulated with fiberglass insulation, air leakage occurs through gaps, cracks and holes. By properly sealing and insulating your home, you can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs. With Dow GREAT STUFFTM, you can easily seal air leaks to conserve energy, enhance comfort and reduce noise.
Preventing Air Leakage with Insulating Foam
Air leakage is one of the biggest causes of energy loss. With rising
heating and cooling costs, it can also be a big drain on a facility’s
budget. Dow Building Solutions offers three easy-to-use sealant
products that help meet increased energy efficiency building
standards. GREAT STUFFTM products are polyurethane-based
and offer superior performance advantages over latex products.
These simple, cost-effective products save valuable energy by blocking drafts and
enhancing indoor comfort:
• GREAT STUFF PROTM Gaps & Cracks Insulating Foam Sealant is a minimal-
expanding gap/crack filler and fireblock penetration sealant easily identified
by its bright orange color.
• GREAT STUFF PROTM Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant is exclusively
formulated to stop drafts by air sealing the gap between the window or door
and its rough opening.
• GREAT STUFF PROTM Wall & Floor Adhesive is a premium-grade, heavy-duty
adhesive for interior and exterior use.
Dow can help you meet government green building standards while lowering your agency’s energy costs.

Dow Sustainability Innovations 5
Dow’s green roof membranes deliver maximum performance, design flexibility and installation efficiency.
A Smart Solution for Sustainable RefrigerationTraditional refrigeration systems, like those seen in supermarkets, are a significant source
of ozone-depleting refrigerants than can potentially be leaked into the environment.
Dow manufactures heat transfer fluids like DOWFROSTTM that can be used in innovative
secondary-loop refrigeration systems to limit the use of refrigerant gas. This reduces the
potential for refrigerant leaks and contributes to lowered annual maintenance costs —
typically 50% lower than traditional systems.
A member of EPA’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, Dow is helping retail
stores, kitchens, cafeterias and other facilities ensure cooling equipment is working safely
while being more energy efficient.
Making Walmart More Energy Efficient with DOWFROSTTM
Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has turned to Dow’s innovative products to make its refrigeration systems more sustainable.
First installed at their 206,000-square-foot Supercenter in Aurora, Colorado, Walmart’s secondary loop refrigeration system using DOWFROSTTM is protecting food quality while reducing refrigerant emissions and delivering energy savings.
It’s Cool to be Green in Philadelphia
In 2010, Dow partnered with the City of Philadelphia on a contest to demonstrate that with the right technologies, even historic homes can be models of energy efficiency.
The black asphalt roof on a row home absorbs 95% of the sun’s heat.* Cool roofs, like those made with Dow’s acrylic technology, reflect the sun’s heat and help prevent it from transferring
into the home. During summer months, cool roofs can be 50 to 80 degrees cooler than typical black asphalt rooftops.* Better yet, cool roofs can be easily installed over existing roofing materials and deliver energy savings of approximately 20%.
On June 19, 2010, Dow and the Energy Coordinating Agency of Philadelphia named the 1200 block of Wolf Street the “Coolest Block in Philly.” The winning homes received a complete energy efficiency makeover, including energy-saving products like Dow’s insulation and air sealing and the installation of a cool roof based on Dow technology.

Dow is supplying enough DOWTHERM™ A globally to generate more than 700 megawatts of electricity from the sun, making Dow the leading supplier of heat transfer fluids in the world for parabolic trough-based solar systems.
Harnessing the power of the sun, the wind and other renewable sources into a reliable power supply and
sustainable business model is a rapidly growing industry. To make clean energy a greater part of our nation’s
supply, the White House, Congress and federal agencies are leading by example, using the government’s
purchasing power to increase adoption of technologies and help bring down their costs.
Dow is also working hard to make these goals a reality. Not only are we developing new clean
energy solutions — such as working with partners to create more environmentally friendly
chemicals and alternative fuels — we are powering today’s renewable energy technologies.
With the right government support and investments from industry leaders like Dow, clean
and renewable energy can transform our economy, planet and way of life.
Delivering Affordable Solar Energy with a Revolutionary Design
Until now, the challenges of solar energy have included aesthetics and ease of use. Dow
is close to changing all that with its revolutionary DOW™ POWERHOUSE™ Solar Shingle.
The DOW™ POWERHOUSE™ Solar Shingle delivers true building-integrated aesthetics
by integrating low-cost thin-film photovoltaic (PV) cells into an asphalt shingle roof.
The innovative product design simplifies installation and related costs because the solar
shingles are installed by a regular roofing contractor.
The solar industry’s next-generation technology was made possible thanks to our partnership
with the U.S. Department of Energy. We paired a $20 million grant from DOE with a $100
million investment of our own to develop the technology. The DOW™ POWERHOUSE™ Solar
Shingle was named one of Time Magazine’s 50 Best Inventions of 2009.
Enabling Large-Scale Concentrating Solar Power
Dow’s chemistry makes large-scale solar “farms” more efficient. DOWTHERM™ A is a
specialized heat transfer fluid that collects heat energy from the sun in Concentrating Solar
Power (CSP) arrays and transports it to a power generating station. Here, water is converted
into steam, driving turbines to make electricity. With DOWTHERM™ A, more electricity is
generated which means more power and economic growth without the need for fossil
fuels. As of November 2010, Dow has filled 14 large CSP plants in the United States and Spain.
These plants will provide power for the equivalent of approximately 415,000 homes, saving
1.6 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.

Innovations for Better Wind Blade Technology As the wind energy industry continues to grow worldwide, improvements
in the design, process and technology of wind turbines must follow. Better-
performing wind blades means harnessing wind power more profitably,
leading to more widespread use of this valuable renewable resource.
By reducing the risk of damage and need for maintenance through
innovative chemistry, Dow AIRSTONETM Systems make wind blades better.
Keeping Wind Energy’s Motor Running
The most visible components of a wind turbine — the huge blades that turn
in the wind — only show part of what it takes to tap this sustainable energy
source. The gearbox and generator to which the blade are attached are key
power generating elements, but gears and bearings can be permanently
damaged after only a few minutes of improper lubrication. Dow UCONTM
GL-320 Lubricant is an innovative product to help keep gears and moving
parts well lubricated, creating better friction control and extending equipment life. UCONTM
GL-320 helps reduce the amount of energy consumed, providing a more efficient wind turbine
and reliable clean energy solution.
With government support and investments from industry leaders like Dow, clean and renewable energy can transform our economy, planet and way of life.
Dow UCONTM GL-320 Lubricant was developed for use in wind turbines, but it delivers excellent performance results in many types of gearboxes.
Powering the Future with Advanced Batteries
Dow was founded 113 years ago on electrochemistry. Today, Dow is applying that expertise through the formation of Dow Kokam, a joint venture created to manufacture state-of-the-art, lithium ion batteries. The technology will help the U.S. move to fully electric vehicles, which will slash U.S. oil use, improve energy security and help combat climate change.
Dow Kokam has assembled an impressive combination of value, experience, knowledge and technology that adds up to reliable consistent battery systems — making Dow Kokam a clear partner of choice for automakers and suppliers. Dow Kokam’s battery technology is the primary power source for equipment in transportation, aerospace, defense, medical and high-end industrial products and is currently being used in electric vehicles around the world. But that’s just the start.
In June 2010, with the help of a grant from DOE, Dow Kokam broke ground on a plant in Michigan that will produce advanced batteries for the next generation of electric vehicles, energy storage and defense applications. When complete, the facility will have the capacity to manufacture 1.2 billion watt hours of large-format affordable lithium-ion batteries — enough to power 60,000 fully electric or hybrid electric vehicles annually.

corrosion and deterioration, helping to ensure the safety and integrity of the structure.
This cost-effective solution can even be installed on deteriorating infrastructure,
postponing costly rebuilds and doubling or even tripling the service-life of the deck.
Insulating Roads from the Cold
Freezing conditions are a longstanding and serious threat to roadways
in colder climates. To combat this recurring engineering challenge, Dow
STYROFOAMTM Brand HIGHLOAD Insulation reduces heat loss so ice
and thaw damage is avoided on cold-climate roadways. This innovative
technology can also be applied to airport pavements, railroads, utility lines
and transmission towers for increased energy efficiency and safety.
Dow POLY-CARB is helping the Missouri DOT protect 250 plus miles of roadway with a pavement marking system based on its Asset Preservation approach. The project guarantees visibility of pavement markings in metropolitan Kansas City and St. Louis during day, night and wet conditions without repairs or additional expenditure for the next four years.

Cost-Effective Solutions for Arsenic Removal
In the U.S. and around the world, the presence of arsenic and other heavy metals in
drinking water is a significant challenge. Removing arsenic from potable drinking water
is an ongoing issue for many communities. ADSORBSIATM Adsorbent Media was developed
specifically to meet this challenge, providing a cost-effective option for reducing arsenic
levels in drinking water.
Filtering Out Particulate Matter and Bacteria
DOWTM Ultrafiltration (UF) helps remove particulate matter from water and other aqueous
solutions through its pressure-driven membrane separation process. Using innovative
chemistry, DOWTM UF offers superior removal of particulate matter and bacteria, and most
viruses and colloids. Ultrafiltration is designed for flexibility, making it a perfect match
for municipal water and water reuse systems of all sizes. DOWTM UF Modules are engineered
for design scalability, resulting in customized systems that produce a highly energy efficient
footprint.
Communities throughout the world depend on Dow to provide a continuous supply of quality drinking water with increased efficiency at a lower cost.
DOWTM Ultrafiltration modules are built with double-walled hollow fibers and a very small pore diameter. This long lasting technology removes particulate matter, bacteria and viruses for a wide range of water needs.
Sustainable Water Solutions, Coast to Coast
Dow Water and Process Solutions’ water technology is helping municipalities across the country protect their communities from the hazards of contaminated water by improving water quality and reducing the need to tap freshwater resources. Here are two such examples:
Black Canyon City, Arizona: The Emerald Well, a potable water source, was found to contain arsenic at levels exceeding U.S. EPA regulations for maximum allowable contaminant levels. Following the 2006 installation of an arsenic removal system containing ADSORBIATM, the Emerald Well showed non-detectable arsenic levels, bringing the well into compliance with EPA standards. The Emerald Well now generates more than 3.5 million gallons of potable water for half of Black Canyon City’s 1700 residents. ADSORBIATM has helped the system to exceed the projected service lifetime by 25%.
Palm Beach County, Florida: To increase output of the Boynton Beach West treatment plant, which provides a steady water supply to 67,000 residents, the facility added pressure vessels and replaced its older FILMTECTM Membrane Elements with newer, more efficient ones. One year later, with the newer membranes installed, the facility’s water capacity increased by 10% and significantly reduced energy costs.
