Have questions? Send them to Dave at: ISU, Hort. Dept., Ames, IA 50011.

by Dr. Dave Minner

My new job is groundskeeper of an18-acre sports complex. We just com-pleted renovation with an Tl-zoneautomated irrigation system andbooster pump. On fields without auto-matic irrigation, we are using watercannons. What would be the best wayto get the fields irrigated outside ofhaving a system professionally designed?

-Bryan Ryan

!CertainlY advocate automaticirrigation systems for all sportsfields. Too many times I hear

the comment, "My yard grows justfine, and I only water it once all sum-mer - I don't need a fancy automaticirrigation system." I respond, "Can weschedule football practice in youryard?" This usually ends the conversa-tion.

Even in high-rainfall areas of theUnited States, an automated irriga-tion system provides many benefits.Let's face it, we will always have todeal with worn-out sections of fieldsthat need to be re-established. Seed, sod, and sprig establishment requirelight and frequent irrigation that canonly be applied by an automatic sys-tem.

We need grass, and we need it fast.Forcing establishment and growthduring the short time when the field isnot being used requires precise place-ment of the correct amount of water.Occasional rain may be fine for thehome lawn or field crop, but it justdoesn't cut it for sports turf.

Watering cannons are often used tohelp a facility get by until it can pur-chase an automatic irrigation system. For $3,000 to $6,000 you can purchasea single unit that can be moved fromfield to field to water establishedgrass. A buried service line or boosterpump will be needed to supply 70 to

130 psi to the machine. Flow ratesrange from 50 to 130 gallons perminute.

These units typically require onefull day to water a football field, so oneunit will usually be needed for everyseven fields. They are sufficient forwatering established grass, but theydon't work very well for the light andfrequent watering required to estab-lish grass from seed.

Watering cannons are better thanno watering system at all. At leastthey allow for some turf growth andground softening during dry condi-tions. However, your goal should be toinstall an automatic irrigation systemwith pop-up sprinklers and a con-troller.

What's the best way to getfields irrigated without havinga system professionallydesigned?

Proper design is a must with irri-gation systems. If you don't knowwhat you're doing, get some help.

On large, complicated jobs, youshould have a certified irrigation spe-cialist design your system. Questionsthat involve water source size, pumpsize, flow loss from elevation change, and similar issues usually require adesign specialist to put together anentire system.

On the other hand, I have complet-ed a number of smaller jobs by usingthe expertise of companies selling irri-gation equipment. Many of the rep-utable irrigation suppliers providesome design expertise. Their irriga-tion literature will have severalschematic drawings for specific irriga-tion layout of all types of sports fields.

As the field manager, you will cer-tainly want to customize the system tofit your needs. Here's how I customize

38 sporfsTURF· http://www.sportsturfonline.com

a football field layout:1) I don't place any heads in the

center of the field; that's where theyrut it out.

2) I zone a block system to matchtraffic patterns, i.e. special zones forthe field center and bench areas.

3) I prefer Hunter 1-42 fast rotorheads for syringe cycle on seedlingturf in wear areas.

4) I maintain a direct line of sightbetween the field and the controller.

The designer will need a few otherpieces of information, like pipe size attap on location, flow rate gpm, andwater pressure psi. From this infor-mation, the irrigation supplier/design-er can come up with the materials listand system layout.

Irrigation companies are very com-petitive. Those with a good reputationwill not only supply quality equip-ment, they will also help design smallprojects at minimal or no cost.

Even if you're going to install thesystem yourself, you'll need an irriga-tion plan and parts list. Let the irriga-tion supplier provide this service. Anddon't forget to appreciate good servicewhen the next job rolls around. ~
