OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN A TECHNICAL, CREATIVE OR BUSINESS ROLE MEGAN WESSELS Nevada High School FOR Costumes IN BYE BYE BIRDIE ARTIST STATEMENT " A lot of work and organization went into creating the many costumes for our musical, Bye Bye Birdie . My main goal when selecting and designing costumes was to create items that help tell the story. Before selecting any costumes, I completed research about the decade the show was set in, and the different fashions that existed. I spent time altering numerous costumes. It was difficult to be able to locate costumes, especially cast members with several costume changes. The decision was made to create poodle skirts for the teenage girls. The skirts for the featured dance were black with different colored dogs. The goal for the girls was to be recognizably similar, but to also have their own personal style. This was possible by varying the color of dogs on the skirts and other additional pieces, such as scarves and head pieces. Making this process as efficient as possible took a lot of hard work. Each member was given a box with their name on it that contained all costume items at the beginning of show week or earlier. Costumes that need to be hung up are labeled with the name and character’s name. This is done to ensure that character styles are preserved. For cast members with costume changes, all of their costumes are evaluated. It is important that their costumes have the same personal style throughout the show. Costumes play a huge role in character development and cast members use their costumes to enhance their characters. "
