"Now hear this!" We,

the Class of 1961,

proudly dedicate our

senior annual to our

principal, Mr. Zimmer-

man. His sense of hu-

mor, his ability to com-

mand respect, and his

awareness of the indi-

vidual reflect the quali-

ties of an administrator

and friend. We could

not ask for more.

Review of the Season

Coach Grayson molded a group of returning sen-

ior lettermen with some big, hard hitting juniors into

a team that demonstrated a strong team-effort all

year. The season was capped with a win over Jeffer-

son in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game, giving

the Cranford Grtdmen an admirable 5-2-2 mark.

The Cougars, more often than not the underdogs,

followed two scoreless ties with Linden and Millburn

by walloping Clark, 39 to 13. This game was high-

lighted by a 92-yard run by co-captain Gary Gipson,

the fleet-footed halfback. One of several very close

games was lost to ever-powerful Rahway, 7 to 6. The

Cranfordites then countered with a one-sided victory

over Hillside, 28-7. Robert and Richard Kupcho

sparked the team offensively, by scoring two touch-

downs each. A 19 to 6 victory over Roselle Park fol-

lowed the Hillside fray. Richard Kupcho again

played an aggressive game by crossing the goal line

twice. The previously unbeaten Roselle team was up-

set by Coach Grayson's boys in a thrilling 20 to 13

game. A spectacular end zone catch by end, Jack

Fedorko, preserved the win for the Cougars. Scotch

Plains dashed Cranford's chances of State and Wat-

chung Conference championships with their last

minute breakaway touchdown pass to outdo the Blue

and Gold, 20 to 13. In the season's final game, the

Cougars beat Jefferson, 14 to 13.

Led by Co-Captains, Bob "All-County" Gamble

and Gary Gipson, the Cranford team established a

commendable record. The defense unit, headed by

Rick Conley, Neil Daly, Henry Dreyer, Mike Stevens,

Bob Gamble, and Roy Bair, proved to be one of the

best in the county.

Review of the SeasonClose defeats crushed the Harriers' hopes of a winning season.

After shutting out Linden, the team lost two close meets to Irvingtonand Rahway. In the latter meet, Ron Ritter and Bill Knox, running thebest times on the team for the year, chased the Indians' second manuntil they finally passed him on the last lap. The team then took threein a row before the losing streak started. Coach Poquette loses fivegraduating seniors this year.

SOCCER

Review of the Season

This season, Cranford's soccer team posted an over-all

record of 2-10-1, an improvement over the past several

years. The opening game with Linden provided the most

excitement of the season. Behind three points at half-time,

the local Booters tied the score and defended the tie until

the last few seconds. A disputed penalty kick cost the team

a victory. Two games later, Cranford tied Edison, and then

lost four straight until it defeated Clark and Hillside. These

two victories made possible a second place finish in the

Watchung Conference with a 2-1-0 record.

Review of the Season

Followers of Cranford High's Basketball team didn'tsee the Cougars crush the county, but they weretreated to some close, exciting contests and a good12-9 regular season record. Cranford got off to agood start, faltered during the holidays, and cameback strongly to become the fourth seeded team inthe Union County Tournament.

Steve Gatyas was the leading scorer, connectingfor 29 and 27 points in two contests against Linden.Senior Bob Robinson, a transfer from Seton Hall, wasa Cougar mainstay throughout the year. Juniors BobEngel, John Litwinetz, Jim King, and Neil "Doc" Cas-taldo and sophomore hoopster Ron Ritter also did anoutstanding job for Coach Martin.

In their first contest, the Cougars scoring 27 pointsin the final period, nipped Roselle Park. The winningmargin was provided by Robinson on a driving lay-up. The Cranford five folded in the last period to loseto Hillside, but they won their next three contests.

In the St. Peter's Tournament over the Christmasvacation, the cagers edged St. Peter's by three points

and then lost to South Side, Essex County Champions,

by one point.

In the second half of the season, the Cagers posted

victories over Hillside and Summit, each an upset win.

Gatyas, Engel, and Litwinetz scored against Hillside,

as Cranford gained a ten point half-time lead and

went on to win by five. Coach Martin's five beat Sum-

mit, champions in their own conference, by seven, al-

though the game was close until the last minute,

when the Cougars scored nine points to Summit's two.

The Cranford quintet, seeded fourth in the Union

County Tournament, reached the semi-final round by

beating Clark and Plainfield. The Hoopsters faced

an undefeated Roselle five in the semi-finals. Behind

by 13 points at half-time, the Blue and Gold put on a

thrilling second half drive to lead Roselle by one

point with 1:30 remaining on the clock. However,

the Rams came through in the clutch and defeated the

fighting Cougars by three points—a thrilling finish to

a successful season.

Review of the Season

Cranford High's varsity wrestling team, on the up grade the last few years, turnedin its most successful season this year. Coach Farrell's Matmen had a 9-3 record, betteringby one win last year's log.

Winning their first seven matches, the Cougars established themselves as a matpower in the county. Jefferson was the first victim, escaping a shutout only becauseCranford had to forfeit a bout. Six more Cougar routs followed, with Hillside, too, avoiding being blanked by winning only one bout.

The grapplers lost their first match to Clark. In this meet, two matmen, Dave Wurthand Wayne Bender, met their first loss. Lee Nordstrom, having won six of his firstseven, was injured. The loss of Nordstrom for the remainder of the year cost theCougars dearly in subsequent matches. Mike Pender also was injured near the end ofthe season. Both these injuries cost Cranford the Westfield and Union matches.

Stars of the team were undefeated Dick Prior and Gary Gipson. Prior, the StateChampion in the 123 pound class, won twelve regular season matches, ten by pins.Gipson wrestled one draw, and had seven pins among his eleven wins.

The other mat regulars and their records were: Pete Pender, second in the state inthe 130 pound class, 10-1-1; Wayne Bender, 9-2-1; Dave Wurth, 9-2-1; Bob Clare, 9-1-2;Bob Olson, 5-3-3; Ralph Zobel, fourth in the state in the 98 pound class, 8-4; andLarry Davis, 4-8.

The Cougars recaptured the District VI Sectional Championship with Grapplers RalphZobel, Dick Prior, Pete Pender, Bob Clare, Gary Gipson and Dave Wurth emerging asDistrict Champs in their own weight class.

CLOSING

We close these pages on the record of our

i?cent past. As we walk through this door for the

last time, we realize that our experiences here at

Cranford High were numerous, nostalgic, and re-

warding. This was our past; so may it be with the

future.
