SPORTSEXTRAVAGANZA
STUDENTS “Students with visual impairments learn best
from engaging their environment, moving
within it, and exploring their surroundings.
By participating in athletic events students
will develop and learn concepts that last
a lifetime.”
PARENTS
Encourages physical fitness among children with visual impairments from infants to 22 year olds.
“They definitely take away some skills from here that they use later on as far as competitiveness and learning how to do things. Their self esteem goes up quite a bit when they start playing normal games in their school. They remember these events and say I can do that.”
Sports Extravaganza strives to provide opportunities for students with visual impairments to participate in a variety of activities that encourage a more active lifestyle and lead to participation in lifelong leisure, recreation, and competitive sports.
Region 10 Education Service Center staff and the Lions Clubs International 2-X1 started the Sports Extravaganza in 1991 in response to the need for an increased emphasis on recreation and lifetime leisure skill development for blind and visually impaired children. Now nearly 300 blind and visually impaired students from 55 school districts in Texas, Colorado
New Mexico and Alabama are invited to Sports Extravaganza each October in Irving,
Texas.

GOALS Students with visual impairments encounter many barriers to participating in physical activities and athletic events.
Limited vision inhibits concept and motor development, resulting in poor movement and travel skills. A natural
consequence is an avoidance of physical fitness activities and inactive leisure choices. Also, there are very few
organized school or community sporting opportunities for these students.
Sports Extravaganza is aimed at lowering the barriers encountered by students with visual impairments so
they can benefit from physical fitness. Through this annual event, inactivity is replaced by dynamic
participation in a variety of activities that encourage students to live a more active
lifestyle and lead them to engage in lifelong leisure, recreation,
and competitive sports.
