WE WELCOME YOU TO

W e are delighted that you are here. Saint David’s is a Christian community that believes in the power of God to transform lives and change the world. We are open

and welcoming to all – race, age, gender, and sexual orientation are NOT barriers to inclusion. We are committed to building up the justice-filled world Jesus taught his disciples to hope and live for. We believe that the Holy Spirit calls us to care for one another, to pray, study, worship, and celebrate. Please, be sure to fill out a guest card located at the usher’s stand (where you were given a bulletin). We invite you to a time of hospitality after worship when we can enjoy getting acquainted!

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP Children bring richness to the community gathered for worship. They bring new ways of seeing familiar rituals and often show an understanding of the mystery of the sacraments lost to many adults. Children also bring sound, questions, loud toys, and distraction. We realize that their presence is essential to the growth and vitality of the church. Please see our brochure on Children in Worship, located in the lobby tract rack.

Nursery Care for infants is available at the 10:15 am service. Please see an usher for more information.

THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

HOLY EUCHARIST

THE WORD OF GOD

HYMN 591 (10:15 am) O God of earth and altar

THE ACCLAMATION Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever.

COLLECT FOR PURITY

A lmighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we

may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY

God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

L ord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring

forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

The people are seated for the readings

THE LESSON Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16

L et mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as

though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled;

Page 4: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." So we can say with confidence,

"The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?"

Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Je-sus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Following the reading… Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 112 (8:00 am service only)

I Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord and have great delight in his commandments! II Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

I Wealth and riches will be in their house, and their righteousness will last for ever. II Light shines in the darkness for the upright; the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.

I It is good for them to be generous in lending and to manage their affairs with justice. II For they will never be shaken; the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.

I They will not be afraid of any evil rumors; their heart is right; they put their trust in the Lord. II Their heart is established and will not shrink, until they see their desire upon their enemies.

Page 5: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

I They have given freely to the poor, and their righteousness stands fast for ever; they will hold up their head with honor. II The wicked will see it and be angry; they will gnash their teeth and pine away; the desires of the wicked will perish.

GRADUAL HYMN 477 (10:15 am) All praise to thee (Verses 1, 2 & 3)

The People remain standing…

The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 14:1, 7-14

O n one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely.

When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the low-est place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, `Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be hum-bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in re-turn, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Following the Gospel…

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON

NICENE CREED For more information on this version of the creed, see announcements at the back of this bulletin and a booklet in the lobby tract rack.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,

seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 7: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE BCP 329 The celebrant concludes the prayers.

CONFESSION OF SIN and ABSOLUTION

Almighty and merciful God, we have wandered and strayed from your ways

like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our

own hearts, we have offended against your holy laws, we have left undone those things

which we ought to have done; and we have done those things

which we ought not to have done. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare those who confess their faults, restore those who are penitent, according to your promises declared

in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a disciplined, righteous, and godly life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

MUSICAL MEDITATION ON “Come, O thou Traveler unknown”

Lyrics to hymn found below...

Come, O thou Traveler unknown, whom still I hold, but cannot see! My company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee;

With thee all night I mean to stay, and wrestle till the break of day.

I need not tell thee who I am, my misery and sin declare; Thyself hast called me by my name, look on thy hands, and read it there;

But who, I ask thee, who art thou? Tell me thy name, and tell me now.

In vain thou strugglest to get free, I never will unloose my hold! Art Thou the man that died for me? The secret of Thy love unfold; Wrestling, I will not let thee go, till I thy name, thy nature know.

Wilt thou not yet to me reveal thy new, unutterable Name? Tell me, I still beseech thee, tell; to know it now resolved I am;

Wrestling, I will not let thee go, till I thy Name, thy nature know.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy.

You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life.

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing (say):

Page 9: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

(Spoken at 8:00) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

(Sung at 10:15)

The Celebrant continues

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people.

Page 10: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Page 11: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Blessed David and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

DISMISSAL

Page 13: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

We are so glad that you are here this day. You are invited to a time of hospitality today

following worship in the Memorial Room.

Life is a Cabaret! “Songs We Love To Sing” On Friday, September 9th at 7:00 pm, St. David’s will present their Second Annual Cabaret benefitting the Choral Scholar Program at St. David’s. This year’s performance will again feature Gus Mercante-Bartels, counter-tenor; Genevieve Van-Catledge, soprano; and Steven Weatherman, piano.

In addition, our special guests this year will be Nich Orlando and Cassie Rumbough (our choral scholars from last year AND this next year!) and Leslie Shapiro, who has sung at St. David’s for special services, such as the Service of Remembrance on the Eve of All Saints Day and the Advent Taize Services held a couple years ago. This will be a lovely and fun-filled evening of song followed by a gracious reception with wine and bubbly. $35 in advance; $40 at the door. —Mark your calendars for this lovely evening of fun for adults in the community!

Parish Announcements The Announcements listed below are everything you’ll need to know about the

life and times of St. David’s for the near future. They answer the questions WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, and WHY.

Please refer to them each week and feel free to take the bulletin home with you for your own personal reference. We purposefully print enough

for this very reason.

Page 14: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Summer Offering and Pledges Please, remember your offering for the work of the church in this place. Regular and consistent cash flow helps our treasurer breathe normally. To keep St. David’s open ONE DAY, costs $1,027.00. This includes insurance, lawn maintenance, salaries, electricity, copier & paper, phone service, water, and inspections & licensing...everything EXCEPT capital improvements. Please, remember the work of your church during the summer.

Day School 2016-2017 Spaces There are still spaces available for 4 year olds, five days per week, full day (7:30 am—5:45 pm!) OR half day (9:00 am—Noon).

Who Doesn’t Love Target? Who Doesn’t Love St. David’s Day School? Combine the two of these and earn a $50 Target gift card! How? Simply refer a family to our Day School! There are openings in both our three year old classes (especially two day and a few five day) and in our five day four year old classes (either half day or full day)! If the family you refer successfully enrolls, our Day School Director, Janet Leishman, will send you a $50 Target Gift Card! ( A successful enrollment is a child who pays both the application fee and the deposit).

Need more information? Call Janet at 302-475-3747 or send her an email ([email protected]) or stop in the school office, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm!

As always, thank you for your continuing support of our ministry.

Summer Hospitality Thanks All the spaces have been filled for Summer Hospitality Hosts! Thanks be to God for all those who participate in this ministry to newcomers in our midst. A special thanks to Nancy Walsh who helped round-up volunteers this summer.

Pokemon GO comes to St. David’s! We are a Poké-Stop for the wildly popular game as a site for people to visit. We welcome ALL in the name of Christ! If you see someone in the parking lot staring into their smart phone , say hello and welcome them to Saint Davids!

Page 15: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Welcome to the New Sidewalk! Only finishing touches and a little bit of lawn patching are yet to come to complete this project (You should’ve seen the large equipment required to remove old concrete! Yikes!). Everything should be even better that before in short order. We are also looking forward to the improved pitch of the end of the sidewalk which will disallow standing water, which in winter becomes ice. Hooray!

We give thanks for St. David’s members who are keeping up with their pledge during these summer months when so many building maintenance projects need to be completed. It’s difficult to keep the Treasurer happy when there is so much money going out and not much coming in!

Page 16: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those ... themselves will be ... one God for ever and ever. Amen. ... bled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

Concerning the Nicene Creed and auxiliary Worship Materials The version of the Nicene Creed in this worship service is from the International Consultation on English Texts — a group of Christian scholars from many denominational traditions — who have rendered various texts in spirit of ecumenism. This version has been approved by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church for use in parish liturgies. For more information on the meaning and rationale for translation and formatting, please see the booklet “We Believe” that is in the tract rack in the lobby.

Additionally, in this season following Pentecost (called early Ordinary Time), we will be using Acclamations, Prayers, Confessions, Eucharistic Prayers, and Post-Communion Prayers from Enriching Our Worship. These supplemental liturgical materials prepared by The Standing Liturgical Commission 1997 were approved In 1997 by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church.

“Enriching Our Worship is not intended to supplant the Book of Common Prayer, but rather to provide additional resources to assist worshiping communities wishing to expand the language, images and metaphors used in worship… ...expanding our vocabulary of prayer and the ways in which we name the Holy One bear witness to the fact that the mystery of God transcends all categories of knowing, including those of masculine and feminine.”
