For All the Saints

Through our baptism,

we are all called to be saints (literally, “holy ones”).

Those who have gone before us

serve as heroes, role models, and intercessors.

We pray to them, we pray with them.

We hope to be united with them in the next life.

Saint Francis, Saint Cecilia, Saint Patrick,

Saint Joseph, Saint Columba,

Saint Peter, the Blessed Virgin Mary . . .

what a “cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1)

surrounds us!

This year, as NCYC sings music of the saints,

we look to them

as we continue our own journey to holiness.

May NCYC’s singing remind us all that we are

“fellow citizens with the saints

and members of the household of God”.

(Ephesians 2:19)

Hymn to St. Cecilia Arr. Richard Proulx (1937-2010) Medieval chant Office hymn for St. Cecilia, November 22

Take up the trumpets and harps to celebrate the triumph of the martyr.

O troops of angels and virgins, proclaim with happy voice: O happy and blessed Cecilia!

That noble woman, longing for the victory, enduring bodily suffering by the power of grace, hands over her bodily members to raging swords.

Kindly look upon us who languish, as you stand before the Judge whom we often sadden,

and bring our purified souls to heaven.

Gaudent in Cœlis Tomás Luis de Victoria (1549-1611) Magnificat of Second Vespers of Martyrs

The souls of the saints rejoice in heaven,

they who have followed in the footsteps of Christ; and because they shed their blood for love of Christ,

thus they exult with him without end.

"In the end, life offers only one tragedy: not to have been a saint." — attributed to Charles Péguy (1873-1914)
