MISSION: To put Christian principles into practice through

programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Robert Kirk Chair

Corporate Board of Directors

DEAR FRIENDS,

It gives us great pleasure to present the 2016 Cannon Memorial YMCA annual report. This is our story, but it’s also yours. As our members, volunteers, supporters and advocates, you are part of the Cannon Y family and are to thank for many of the successes discussed in the coming pages.

In 2016 we raised a record $240,917 and awarded over $330,000 in scholarships to members in need. The Share the Harvest Community Farm had a very successful first harvest, providing over 7,700 pounds of fresh produce to families and individuals in need in Cabarrus County. The Empty Stocking Fund helped over 150 families experience Christmas together, and programs for Active Older Adults, youth and teens grew – allowing us to better serve our community at every level. With a strong leadership team and engaged, committed volunteers, we are ready to take on new opportunities in 2017 and spread the mission of the YMCA.

The Y is so much more than a gym. It’s a cause that brings people together in amazing ways and offers transformational opportunities for individuals and families to grow, learn and thrive. We are blessed to have you join us as we reflect on 2016 and look to

our promising future together.

The Y is the nation’s leading

nonprofit committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and

social responsibility.

At the Cannon Memorial YMCA, we believe everyone should have the

opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

TRANSFORMING LIVES

6 | OUR STORY, AND YOURS.

Bobby Pickrel (known to many as Larry, or Bobby Larry) has

been a member of the Kannapolis YMCA for most of his 77 years. After three years in the Army and almost 20 years working in

Chattanooga, Tennessee, he returned to his hometown of Kannapolis to take care of his ailing mother. Despite being in excellent shape during his time in the Army, Bobby had put on a significant amount of weight and his own health was declining. He suffered a stroke and had to undergo extensive speech therapy to regain full control of his speech. Bobby also had to have a ligation procedure done on veins in his legs in order to relieve pain from walking and standing.

At 354 pounds, Bobby’s doctor urged him to lose weight. So he turned to his faithful YMCA. By working out three times a

week and keeping a closer eye on his diet, he began steadily reaching his goals. He notes that his first 54 pounds were the hardest to lose, until he reached the “last 5” milestone to accomplish his goal of 100 total pounds lost. It is now two years later and Bobby has lost over 100 pounds, showing no signs of stopping any time soon. He credits a lot of his motivation to YMCA staff, including Ron Davis, CEO of the Cannon Y. Ron would run into Bobby in the Fitness Center at the Kannapolis Y and ask, “Bobby, have you gotten that 100 pounds off yet?” or “How about those last 5 pounds?” This type of encouraging, family atmosphere is what Bobby loves about the Y.

As a teenager, Alyce was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which is an endocrine system disorder that often leads to weight gain and difficulty losing weight. She struggled to balance her life with the additional side effects of PCOS, including depression and anxiety, until her doctor ultimately recommended that she stop working in order to focus on her health.

Now the mother of four children, Alyce and her family had been program members of the West Cabarrus YMCA for several years.

She signed her sons up for soccer at the Y because she

enjoyed the safe, welcoming environment of Y Youth Sports. With only her husband working, and in need of some motivation to get healthy again, her friends at the Membership Desk suggested she apply for an Open Doors scholarship.

Since receiving financial support, Alyce and her family have participated in many programs at the Y. She works out every day, and has lost over 75 pounds since joining. She made lasting friends in Zumba and the CREATION Health class, and is appreciative of the supportive, kind women she has met here.

“One of the awesome things CREATION taught me was how important being kind and supportive is. We’re all fighting some sort of battle that those around us aren’t aware of,

so it’s essential to be there for each other.”

Alyce’s children love to participate in Tae Kwon Do, ballet, and the Y Playhouse activities. At times, their excitement about the Y has driven her further towards her goals. She recalls a time when she lost some motivation. “I wouldn’t want to come and work out, but my kids loved it so much that they would beg me. That’s what kept me coming back until I learned to love it, too.” At first, Alyce didn’t feel comfortable in group exercise classes – but now you’ll see her encouraging members to join her in Zumba and yoga, and offering to help others in any way she can.

FAITH FAMILY COMMUNITY

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

The Y is for everyone. Our programs, services and initiatives enable kids to realize their potential, prepare teens for college, offer ways for families to have fun together,

empower people to be healthier in spirit, mind and body; prepare people for employment, welcome and embrace newcomers and help foster a nationwide service ethic.

And that's just the beginning.
