THE Y:FOR A BETTER US

Every fall, our Speer and Bardmoor Preschool early learning academies welcome a new class of toddlers into our family with a profound sense of optimism. Here at the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, we know the next decade and beyond may hold challenges for some of these children. Guardians may enter and exit their lives. Their parents might juggle multiple jobs. They may even experience periods of hunger for food, or even basic emotional support.

Our optimism lies in the basic knowledge that from this point forward, these children are no longer alone. From the time they enter our Y as a preschooler – developing into school-aged children and teens – our youth will be nurtured by safe, secure environments and encouraged by highly-qualified and engaged staff. They will have consistent access to healthy snacks and physical activity. They will build confidence through sports, swimming, play, and adventure. They will form lasting friendships, forging a steady value system of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. They will develop the grounded security – and the deep understanding – that race or gender or socioeconomic background does not govern a child’s future.

You have entrusted our Y with the faith and support to change lives. You have listened to our stories. You have connected to our mission. And for 97 years, you have helped to advance our organization to new heights. As the city’s largest out-of-school time childcare provider, our Y successfully delivered major youth initiatives to more than 3,200 children in 2016. We refined our school-age, evidence-based childcare curriculum; expanded our national award-winning dance program; and kicked off our new YMCA Junior Rowdies soccer league. Most significantly, we embarked on a new strategic initiative to explore a partnership with Pinellas County Schools, poised at delivering academic and social enrichment, and expanding our impact within our service area.

As a leading philanthropic organization in the Greater St. Petersburg community, we don’t do it alone. We are grateful to dynamic staff, committed volunteers, and valued donors and partners that help to make our community stronger and healthier for all. Thank you for helping to build a better us.

SUSAN AND MARKUS MITTERMAYRDONOR SPOTLIGHT: CONNECTING TO THE CAUSE In 2003, Susan Mittermayr was introduced to the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg’s Board of Directors; she saw an organization uniquely positioned to serve the needs of her community.

“I appreciated that the Y not only worked to advance its own cause, but it embraced and uplifted other organizations involved in complementary work,” she recalls. That collaborative spirit inspired both Susan and her husband Markus to get involved.

No stranger to philanthropic and civic support, Susan and Markus have been involved with organizations ranging from the Alpha House and St. Jude’s Cathedral to the Rotary Club. Susan spent the following decade involved in various YMCA Board committees, proudly evolving to the organization’s first female Board Chair in 2013. Pivotal to that leadership commitment was the organization’s expansion into early childhood education.

“The educational and social deficiencies that youth are exposed to have proven to be highly detrimental, affecting the full trajectory of their lives including future earning potential,” Susan said. “Knowing the Y could harness its school-age expertise to affect youth at a critical time in their early life, providing formalized educational opportunities that were measurable, further entrenched my belief in the mission.”

The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is actively improving lives. But we can’t do it without your help. A commitment to support the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign ensures that we are able to continue offering meaningful programs like the Y Diabetes Prevention Program, Y Dance Academy, LIVESTRONG® at the Y, and affordable childcare that affect thousands of youth, adults, and seniors annually.

Every dollar makes a difference. Your gift will ensure that the Y continues to make our community a better place to live, grow, and thrive.

Make your tax-deductible contribution to your YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg today by going to www.stpeteymca.org/give/make-a-gift/

For any questions, contact Michelle Curtis, Director of Development at [email protected]

Susan’s volunteer leadership stemmed from board governance to personal giving, with her and Markus’ capital giving generosity recognized at the Speer YMCA Preschool Academy.

“Our gift wasn’t about our names being on a wall. It was about an opportunity to make a difference. That community center resonated with what matters to us: A place for families to spend time together. What matters is family engagement.”

It is this idea that is key to supporting a nonprofit, according to Susan: discover what you’re passionate about and connect with organizations – like the Y – that deliver on that mission. Her husband, Markus, did just that when he connected with the wellness programming at the YMCA. In 2010, Markus was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and since his full recovery, he has committed to incorporating exercise at the Y into his daily life. For him, the mental benefits from movement ushered in healing just as rapidly as the physical ones. “The Y was his outlet,” Susan said.

Here at our Y, there is a place for everyone to connect with a program they are passionate about. Lasting personal and social change in the Greater St. Petersburg area starts with commitments from donors like the Mittermayrs: “Our giving serves as a daily reminder for youth that they are worth everything, and that we are here for them.”

BE WATER SMARTFROM THE START

“I realized at the age of 31 that it might be possible for me to learn how to swim. At first I was afraid of putting my head under the water. I see how the instructors at the Y are determined, encouraging, supportive, and consistent in everything that they do. I feel very fortunate, and feel very comfortable now being in the pool.”

Stephen Thomas Executive Director, Rays Baseball Foundation

According to the Florida Department of Health, Florida loses more children under age five to drowning than any other state. This issue has been found particularly critical among minority communities. African American children ages 5-14 are three times more likely to drown than their Caucasian peers. This imbalance is partly due to the lack of swimming access for these children.

LEARNED TO BE SAFER AND MORE CONFIDENT AROUND WATER

At the Y, we are committed to providing swim lessons and water safety instruction for youth of all ages. With the generous support of the Tampa Bay Rays Foundation, Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County, Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, and the United Way of the Suncoast, more than 11,300 Tampa Bay area youth have learned to be safer and more confident around water.

MICHELLE DUDLEYVOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: DELIVERING OUR CAUSE Over 30 years ago, when Michelle Dudley started volunteering for the YMCA’s Youth In Government program, she thought she knew what she was getting into. Once a student of the program, Michelle had experienced first-hand the value of civic and government immersion. What she didn’t know, and would later learn, was the sense of empowerment the program would have on the lives of a widely diverse group of students. “I became just so impressed. Each and every participant was impacted – not just the intellectual,” Michelle said.

Youth In Government (YIG) is a civics and model government program designed to empower 6th through 12th grade students to be engaged citizens and servant leaders. An accomplished educator, currently with Northeast High School, Michelle proudly shared the story of one YIG participant. “I’m convinced that one day this young man will sit in the Supreme Court. The performance he gave while attending State Assembly in Tallahassee was remarkable. The self-satisfaction he received knowing what he was now capable of doing; he wasn’t becoming merely a better citizen, he was becoming a better person.”YIG challenges students to take a stand, and to sift through the noise of peer and media pressure to pinpoint their own beliefs and value system. “This program teaches youth how to communicate face-to-face. It feels odd to say, but this has become a lost art these days,” Michelle said.

YIG graduates also demonstrate enhanced self- esteem, a stronger sense of personal direction, and fortified resilience to face challenges in life.

“When we induct youth into the program, the creed states ‘spirit, mind, and body’,” Michelle said.

“Youth In Government embraces all of this, and as a volunteer, that’s really important to me.”

“An optimist is a person who sees a green light everywhere, while a pessimist sees only the red stoplight... the truly wise person is colorblind.” Dr. Albert Schweitzer

This quote describes Mrs. Dudley because she does nothing for recognition – everything is truly from the heart. She’s a magnificent person.

The Y is committed to providing enriching programs that promote overall wellness of community members, regardless of socioeconomic barriers. Over the past two decades, numerous studies have affirmed the benefits of the arts on the cognitive, academic, social, and personal development of children and youth. To this end, the Y offers dance classes to children ages 2-18 through its award-winning YMCA Dance Academy.

YMCA PERFORMING ARTS

The YMCA Dance Academy (YDA) is a national American Ballet Theater certified school that comprises 65 classes per week including diverse dance styles from ballet, hip-hop, and jazz, encouraging students to pursue various genres. Under the direction of Kelly Homman, this nationally award-winning dance program is dedicated to developing talent at both a recreational and competitive level.

The Y implements a specially designed curriculum that enables students to develop advanced dance techniques as they progress through each class level.

In 2016, the Y further expanded the YDA through the Tiny Dancer program offered at the Speer YMCA and Bardmoor YMCA Preschool academies, enabling the Y to engage 60 children ages 2-5 from the South St. Petersburg and Bardmoor communities.

Annually, YDA serves more than 300 students through the Jim & Heather Gills YMCA and Bardmoor and Speer YMCA Preschool academies – 45% of which receive scholarship assistance from the Y to participate in the Academy.

2016 TELLY VIDEO AWARD“FOR A BETTER US”

In 2016, the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg was the proud recipient of a Telly Award for its “For a Better Us” video.

This award-winning video highlighted the journey of a young boy who realizes his ultimate potential through his experience with the Y.

Our local video quickly evolved from a local spot to a national commercial, with Y-USA utilizing it for mission awareness across the nation.

Our Y would like to thank FLORIDA BLUE for their contribution of a sports pad to our Speer YMCA Preschool Academy and the cycle room to our Bardmoor Y. These platforms provide our community with healthy foundations for years to come.
