Dear Friends:

We needed four nominees for the board this year, and our Nominations Committee found them.Martin “Tin” David, Bruce Froehlke, JoeNiebauer, and Bill Reis bring to the Friends animpressive range of expertise. Each was unani-mously endorsed at our annual dinner meeting inJanuary. They replace Tom Bernthal, Andrea Gar-gas, Bill Hoeksema, and Sally Kefer. The Friendshave benefited greatly from the involvement of

these outgoing board members in activities extending from technicalprojects to fundraising. Thanks to Dan Gustafson for chairing anothersuccessful nominations effort.

Meeting in February, the new board appointed Rick Kurz treasurer andRod Miller secretary. They replace Andrea Gargas and Hagen Hed-field, both of whom deserve our gratitude for their service. Hagen’stenure as the Friends’ treasurer goes back almost to the last century, and his advice on budget questions will continue to carry weight. Rickand Rod are already hard at work.

Readers of the newsletter will know about the Bock Forest restoration. The latest news on that project is available in Mike Anderson’s articlein this issue. Another project of significance has recently been pro-posed, one few people know about. This is a sedimentation pond thatwould be built along the creek corridor just north of the CenturyAvenue bridge near Branch Street. The aim is to prevent solid matterfrom flowing north into the marsh where it settles out, creating thedelta pattern as the creek bed turns east and heads toward Lake Men-dota. The city’s Water Resources Committee is examining this project, which is far from the drawing board at this point.

Water Resources will play a role in addressing another crucial problemfacing the Pheasant Branch marsh. As many people are aware, therecharge area for the large springs extends northeast from the conser-vancy in a teardrop shape that covers considerable land in the Town ofSpringfield. Some development by the town and city in the rechargearea is inevitable—and steps need to be taken to assure adequate infil-tration of groundwater where this development occurs. Without thisinfiltration, the springs will eventually dry up.

We will keep our eye on these matters and report on them in duecourse.

Sincerely yours,

Jim O’Brien, President

As you walk the Conservancy and seeSandhill Cranes, especially parents withchicks, please record your sightings onthe Crane Activity Zones map on ourwebsite www.pheasantbranch.org. Ifyou are confident in your observations, please document what you see, espe-cially relative size, and the date andtime, as well as any interactions withpeople or pets. The map is an aerialphoto of the Conservancy with distincthabitat zones shown to make it easierto describe the location of the birds.Use these zone codes to show whereyou saw the Cranes and chicks whentaking notes. “U” stands for uplandand “W” stands for wetland. If youhave trouble pulling the map off thewebsite, please contact Susan [email protected] and she willemail or mail you a colored hard copyof the map. (Be sure to include youraddress.)

Why are we doing this? The trails are awonderful resource for the community, appreciated by all. Many of us havehad great experiences enjoying nature, including opportunities to view wildlife

that we treasure. This brings with it anobligation to be sure we are responsiblehikers and wildlife watchers. We areconcerned about the impact on SandhillCrane chicks of increased activity, espe-cially pets off leash, in the east side ofthe Conservancy. Typically one or twopairs of Sandhill Cranes breed in themarsh, but use the open areas of theConservancy and Orchid Heights Parkto raise their young. Usually two eggsare laid and two chicks hatch, but onlyone chick survives to adulthood. Lastyear we recorded two Crane chicks, and watched them as they grew to fullsize over the course of the summer.

Two years ago there were two chicksseen in spring; but by the end ofAugust, there was only one.

Cranes have been around this year sinceearly March. On Saturday, March29th, there were two adult Cranes nearpoint “9U”. Two off-leash dogs chasedthe Cranes until the birds flew away. The owner did not try to restrain theirdogs. This kind of activity is particular-ly alarming because there is a leash lawin the Conservancy AND the dogs wereallowed to chase the Cranes. Someonewalking past the dog owner’s car record-ed the license plate number and turnedit into the police---remember there is avolunteer trail watch crew set up by thecity.

We do need your help in monitoringthe survival of the Cranes and otherhabitat in the conservancy. With care, and especially by keeping pets on leashand under control at all times, we canmake sure that the Conservancy is aplace where Cranes and other wildlifeare able to breed and raise their youngsuccessfully.

Butler has lived in Madison since 1971,when he came here to study law afterearning a degree in government (andhonors as a college debater) at Dart-mouth and a JD at Northwestern. Thesecond advanced degree fell by the way-side in favor of family and full-timework at Stafford Rosenbaum, the lawfirm where he is still affiliated. Butler’sroots now run deep. His communityservice includes two terms on the DaneCounty Board, where he was intro-duced to the Friends of PheasantBranch. The group was originally aprotest movement, spawned by a

proposal to bury new sewer linesthrough the heart of the conservancy.

“I was impressed,” Butler says. “Theorganization was both passionate andrational. The members had strong feel-ings about the importance of preserva-tion, but they also had good facts andreasonable arguments. No grandstand-ing, no pointless debates. Theyenhanced the quality of our decisions.”As a result Butler, now a Middleton res-ident, joined the Friends. “MargaretMead once wrote, I can’t quote herexactly, but her point was that greatthings can be accomplished by a few

While Butler was President of FOPB,he helped create the campaign thatresulted in the creation of the John C.Bock Community Forest. The effortraised more than three million dollars.“We had never done fundraising on thatscale before,” he says. “Some grants andmemberships, of course, but no majorgifts. But we got excellent support fromthe City of Middleton, the DNR, theCounty Board, the Madison

Community Foundation, and a flood ofgenerous donations from individuals. We also had extraordinary leadershipfrom Board members, starting withSally Kiefer. The purchase was her idea. This experience proved to me again thata small group of people, highly motivat-ed, can make important things happen.”

Today, the focus of Butler’s involvementwith Pheasant Branch is more casual: hehikes and bikes there. “There are lots ofreasons why Pheasant Branch is impor-tant to me,” he says. “It’s a majordrainage area that filters pollutants,

protecting the lakes and local aquifer. It’s an educational tool, especially forchildren, a living laboratory. And it’s aneconomic asset of incalculable impor-tance. Remember why Money Maga-zine called Middleton the best of com-munity of our size in the country?Above all, it was the quality of familylife. It was ‘parents and kids plying thebike trails of the conservancy.’ So thereare many reasons why I’m a member ofthe Friends of Pheasant Branch. Butyou know the most important? I justlove being there.”
