President’s Message

“Gifts of the Season”

APICS Members and Friends:

There is nothing like a foot of snow in the yard and driveway to remind us that we are in the midst of the holiday season! For those who had one or more “Snow Days”, I hope you put them to good use spending time with family and keeping warm and safe. Some of you may have used the time to study for your CPIM Part I exam! Or maybe not.

The APICS Foothills Chapter has received a special early gift from Santa this year. We have been notified that we have again been awarded the “Platinum” achievement award for 2017-2018 by the APICS National office! This award is based on our submission of the Chapter’s activities and educational programs for the Chapter year. This continues a tradition of excellence for our chapter over many years. I am very grateful to our board for supporting a team effort to achieve this award. We are working hard to continue this tradition this year.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, our second annual remote Professional Development Meeting was held in Boone in early November. With students from Appalachian State University and Lees-McRae College, it was a pre-Thanksgiving extravaganza! We had a total of 98 in attendance which shattered last year’s record. Todd Perry of Procter & Gamble energized the group with some great career tips and challenged the students with a

lot of questions that were awarded with some fine P&G products! There will be some fine-smelling laundry and dorm/apartment rooms in Boone and Banner Elk! Todd also related some recent supply chain management innovations that are having a significant impact at P&G. It was a great evening at the Dan’l Boone Inn! I’d like to thank Samantha Fuentes, assistant to Dr. Dinesh Dave, for making the arrangements for this wonderful event.

If that weren’t enough, we’ve also wrapped up the CPIM Part I certification study course with fifteen supply chain professionals completing the journey. We wish them well as they take on the exam! I’d also like to thank Dave Lehman from the Piedmont-Triad Chapter and Recognized APICS Master Instructor who stepped in to help us provide this great educational opportunity. We are very grateful for his assistance.

More educational opportunities are coming up in the new year with offerings of a CPIM Part II preparation class and a CSCP certification class, both starting in January. See the attached flyers to learn details.

We kick off 2019 with a joint meeting January 17th

with our friends at the Institute of Management Accountants Catawba Valley Chapter at the Lake Hickory Country Club. Dr. Steve Leon has arranged an interesting program on tariffs featuring Laura Brewer from Lowe’s Home Improvement on this timely topic.

The gifts just keep on coming from your Foothills Chapter! Meanwhile, I wish all our members a

very Merry Christmas and the happiest of Holidays. Make a resolution to attend more PDM’s in the New Year! Give a gift to yourself!

Membership News

Greetings APICs supporters. We are coming to the end of the calendar year and we have had a great membership following in 2018 that we look to continue into the New Year. We are starting December with 156 members. We had one new professional member and six new student members join in November. Pahnou Vue joined the chapter as a professional member from Corning. Please join me in welcoming Pahnou to the chapter and we look forward to seeing you at a future PDM.We have no anniversary celebrations for this month.

ASCM – What’s it All About? In October at the 2018 APICS Conference in Chicago, APICS announced the launch of ASCM, Association for Supply Chain Management. The new organization is more than a re-branding of APICS, but an organization focused on “end-to-end supply chain management” and “a global operating environment”, according to ASCM CEO, Abe Eshkenazi.  Digital technology, Augmented Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Blockchain, Virtual Reality and more are at the fore front of today’s supply chain.  ASCM is working with leading organizations around the world to offer a truly end-to-end supply chain education and certification experience for both the individual and corporations. ASCM’s new broader

offerings will include supply chain transformation, innovation and leadership development in addition to the existing APICS CPIM, CSCP and CLTD certifications. So, what does all this mean? on January 22, 2019, all APICS memberships will automatically transition to ASCM memberships. Communications have been sent to all members letting them know about the transition, so check your in-box!  And be on the lookout for continued updates as the transition takes place.  You will be receiving a member kit with a new member card and information about ASCM early next year.  No action is needed on your part.  All original join dates and expiration dates will remain the same, as will all current member benefits. Membership Transition Webinars will be held on December 11 at 9:00 a.m. CT and 3:00 p.m. CT with recorded versions made available shortly thereafter. APICS is here to stay and here to grow with over 60 years of world class educational content and certifications.  APICS chapters will continue to exist and thrive, serving as one of the primary cornerstones of ACSM.  Foothills will remain committed to serving the surrounding local area with high quality speakers and relevant topics.  We will continue to offer APICS certification classes to expand your supply chain knowledge and provide a wealth of networking opportunities as we always have.

Record Crowd at November PDM

A record crowd of 98 supply chain management professionals, students and faculty from Appalachian and nearby Lees-McRae College enjoyed dinner, networking and an excellent presentation by Todd Perry from Procter & Gamble. Following are some photos of those in
