Fairmont State’s defense, much maligned during the 2014 season for allowing the most points (37.3) and yards per game (481.3) in the Mountain East Conference, came up huge Saturday afternoon in the second half of the Falcons’ thrilling 35-31 come-from-behind homecoming victory over vis-iting Urbana University Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

After allowing the Blue Knights to score four touchdowns on their first six possessions of the game, FSU’s defense sti!ened in the second half and permitted just one field goal on seven Urbana possessions in the final 30 minutes.

Falcon sophomore cornerback Jacob-Jean Charles also intercepted a Blue Knights’ pass and returned it 28 yards to set up a game-tying TD in the final half and Fairmont made a huge goal line stand in the waning minutes to secure the victory after Urbana achieved a first-and-goal at the Falcons’ eight-yard line.

Fairmont’s defense is young and has been hit with a rash of injuries this fall, but individuals keep stepping to the forefront for the Falcons and mak-ing plays.

Saturday true freshman mike linebacker Marcus Porter enjoyed another huge outing for the Fal-cons since moving to his new position from de-fensive end three weeks ago. Porter finished with a game-high 10 tackles before leaving the contest in the third quarter with an ankle injury. The last three weeks Porter has amassed 32 of his 41 total

FSU sophomore quarterback Cooper Hibbs record-ed his fourth 300-or-more yard passing game of the season in Saturday’s win over Urbana.

Hibbs, who missed one game this year due to in-jury, completed 23-of-37 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns in the 35-31 victory. He was inter-cepted once.

His four 300-or-more yard passing games this fall are second in the Mountain East Conference to Notre Dame College’s Ray Russ, who has five.

To date, Hibbs has completed 135-of-230 passes (58.7 percent) for 1,769 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. He’s been intercepted 10 times.

For his career Hibbs has completed 274-of-497 passes (55.1 percent) for 3,373 yards and 25 touch-downs. He has su!ered 20 career interceptions. He already ranks sixth in school history in career passing yards, career touchdown passes and ca-reer completions.

Fairmont and Urbana combined to set a Mountain East Conference single-game record Saturday but it wasn’t a good one.

The Falcons and Blue Knights combined to have 41 penalties for 410 yards in the contest and all, for the most part, were warranted. FSU was flagged 20 times for 195 yards, while Urbana was penal-ized 21 times for 215 yards. The combined 41 total penalties is one shy of the national record of 42 in a game which was set by N.C. Central (23) and St. Paul’s (19) on Sept. 13, 1986. Those two schools also hold the national record for combined pen-alty yardage in a game (453).

Ironically, Urbana also holds both the MEC single-game record for penalties (24) and penalty yards in a game (219). That was set last season in a Blue Knights’ victory over West Liberty.

Fairmont had 17 penalties for 160 yards in the first half of Saturday’s game with Urbana. In the sec-ond half the Falcons cleaned things up and suf-fered just three flags for 35 yards.

For the season Fairmont is averaging 9.5 penalties per game for 91.9 yards per outing. That ranks the Falcons 10th in the 11-team MEC. Urbana ranks 11th with an average of 11.8 penalties per contest for 117.1 yards per game.

When Tyler Thompson first strolled onto the foot-ball field back in August of 2010 at Fairmont State University not too many people took notice.

A diamond in the rough coming out of high school, Fabian Guerra has turned into a gem of a find for Fairmont State University’s football team.

When Guerra’s prep football career ended at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami in the fall of 2012 prep sports bloggers in the south Florida area tabbed him as a potential college pros-pect.

But no one paid attention to the blog-gers or Guerra. No one that is except Fairmont State.

And in a week four victory over West Virginia State he made a clutch 12-yard reception in heavy tra"c across the mid-dle to convert on a fourth-and-five play and later capped the same drive with a beautiful diving 15-yard touchdown catch in the front corner of the end zone to help FSU secure a 24-12 win.

Ask any current Fairmont State Univer-sity football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.

They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game.

Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Pa-triots won their first league champion-ship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all.

Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life.
