Shirts For NicaraguaThe Javelina beach volleyball team conducted a t-shirt exchange prior to one of the indoor volleyball matcheslast week. Fans who brought in a t-shirt could trade for a Javelina volleyball shirt. The shirts collected willbe send to Nicaragua for distribution. The Javelina volleyball team played the Nicaragua national teamduring a tour last summer.

ANOTHER OF THOSE great weekends for the Javelinas. They’re rolling around on a regular basis. And they are the kindyou never get tired of.

The volleyball team swept road games against West TexasA&M and Texas-Permian Basin and the football team downedWestern New Mexico.

Congratulations to the volleyball team for reaching 23 victoriesthis season. This is the most ever for a Javelina squad, and thereare still two matches left this weekend in the Steinke Center.

The football team record improved to 7-3 with a game left. The Javelinas have won five in a row, and the three setbacks on theslate were by a total of five points.

OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE will hold its 10th annualChili cook-Off Saturday in conjunction with the Aggies’ finalregular-season football game.

The Javelinas will be visiting Goodwell, Okla., for the contest. There is no entry fee for the chili cooking contest but participants

must provide three gallons of chili for judging and taste testing.According to the rules for the contest, participants may be

asked to sample their own chili prior to judging and serving to thepublic.

The winners of the contest will be announced at halftime of thegame.

THIS WILL BE another dream weekend for local sports fans.Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see the Steinke Center alive

with the bouncing of basketballs and volleyballs.Friday’s schedule will see the women’s basketball team opening

its schedule with East Central at 1 p.m., the record-settingvolleyball team hosting Midwestern State at 5 p.m. and the men’sbasketball team playing its first game at 7 p.m. against Black Hills(S.D.) State.

On Saturday, the volleyball team will host Cameron at 1 p.m.and the men’s basketball team will take on South Dakota School ofMines at 7 p.m.

The women’s basketball team will be back in action Sunday at2 p.m. against the University of Tampa (Fla.).

If you are a real, real sports fan, you can also catch a women’sgame between East Central and Tampa at 5 p.m. Saturday.

THIS WEEKEND’S GAME with Panhandle State may be thelast between the Javelinas and Aggies.

Panhandle is scheduled to come to Kingsville next season forthe finale but the Aggie officials have announced the school willleave the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II at the end ofthis season.

This will leave a gap on the final date in 2017 unless a non-conference opponent can be found. This is difficult because mostschools have conference matchups on that weekend.

THANKS TO 968 Javelina fans, the football team was selectedas the October Team of the Month in NCAA Division II.

They voted in a poll conducted by Herosports.com.All 171 football teams in Division II were used in the

calculation from the preseason to the current rank and from the endof September to the current rank.

The website factored in each team’s record, big wins and a fewintangibles to come up with the five teams.

Nominated along with the Javelinas were Edinboro (Pa.),Fairmont (W. Va.) State, West Alabama and Southern Arkansas.

Even so,the Javelinas, who boast a four-game win streak, their longest since2010, could still earn a postseason bid to the Texarkana or Heart ofTexas bowls.

“It’s a far cry from three straight two-win seasons forKingsville, one of the long-time ‘blue bloods’ of D2Football.

“The Javelinas’ defense leads the LSC with 306.6 yards pergame allowed, while sophomore defensive lineman Brandon Jonesis tied for eighth in the nation with 10 sacks. Senior quarterbackMyles Carr leads the LSC with 23 touchdowns and a 66.7completion rate and is second in the league in passing efficiency(165.9).”
