    Food Grade Printer Operation

    Introduction

Please take note of the following facts regarding VIDEOJET

    WaterBased

    Food Grade Inks:

    WaterBased Ink types 169210, 169220, 169230, 169240,

    169250, 169260, 169270, and 169280 require a special

    cleaning and maintenance procedure.

Ink types 169000, 169301, and 169400 do not require a specialcleaning procedure.

    VIDEOJET

inks meet specific FDA listed regulations.

Local regulations determine the acceptability of using VIDEOJET

Food Grade Fluids on specific food items. Consult theseregulations for acceptability requirements.

    VSI Certification requires that VIDEOJET

    inks are used only

    with VIDEOJET

makeup and cleaning solutions; use of any

    other solution voids certification.

Printer(s) must be ordered new as Food Grade type. Printer(s)

cannot be converted from another ink and still be considered

    usable for food grade applications.

    Consult VIDEOJET

World Wide Technical Support for specific

applications instructions or information at 8008433610.

The enduser is responsible for the ultimate determination ofapplications compliance with regulatory agency guidelines.

    Recommend Food Grade Ink Procedures

    Introduction

This section describes the recommended procedures to thoroughly cleanWaterBased Food Grade Printers at startup, or at selected intervals. It also

lists the general concerns for using Food Grade Inks.

NOTE: This does not apply to ink type 169000, 169301, and 169400.

    Notice for Food Grade Applications

TheInkSource fluids shipped to you from our Estes Food Grade Facility are

manufactured in a manner to ensure food grade quality.

The Food Grade Printer and Food Grade Fluid operate as a system and aresuitable for use in specific food applications. Ink formulation for most foodusage is application-specific.

    VIDEOJET

recommends the following general concerns be considered when

    using Food Grade Inks:

General Concern: Preclude Contaminants from enteringthe System

    The fluids manufactured by VIDEOJET

are of the highest quality. Our Fluid

Production Facility ensures the fluids are free of contaminants that could harm

the integrity of the Food Grade Printer installation. As a result, thecontaminants that must be precluded from entering the system are those

present in the installation environment. Typically, these are airborne

contaminants either in the pressurized air used to power the printer, or in the

    air surrounding the printhead.

    Pressurized Air Supply

    VIDEOJET

offers an Air Filtration System designed to remove harmfulcontaminants from the air supply. Typically, each printer will be installed with

its own filtration system. This allows the system to be installed as close to the

printer as possible and provides for easier maintenance.

This system is equipped with a Back Pressure Indicator that senses when thefilter elements require replacing. Replace both the Pre-filter and the Final

Coalescing Filter as required by the indicator, or every two months, whichever

occurs first. When replacing the filters, rinse the filter bowls with CleaningSolution (P/N 169010). Dry the bowls before installation.

    Positive Air Flow to Printhead.

To restrict contaminants from entering the printhead during printer operation,

a positive air flow must be maintained at the printhead. VIDEOJET

offers adevice for measuring the air flow through the printhead, and

    recommends you

check the positive air flow at the printhead each day or whenever the

printhead is moved. Air flow should be checked with the printhead and

umbilical cord in position. If the air flow rate is not between 1 and 2 scfh, theflow rate should be adjusted.

General Concern: Preclude Environmental Changes thataffect the pH of the Fluid

The Makeup Fluid (P/N 169215) is specially designed to maintain both the

viscosity and the pH balance of the ink system. In order for the system to

perform properly, the operator must follow these recommendations:

    Fluid Low Condition

The operator should respond to Fluid Low Conditions promptly. When a Fluid

Low Warning is shown on the display, the operator should immediately

replace the old fluid bottle with a fresh bottle. When the fluid level is low in abottle, air is bubbled through the fluid. This will cause the pH level in the

    fluid to change. VIDEOJET

recommends you check the Fluid Level Sensing

System whenever you change fluid bottles.

To check the Fluid Level Sensing System, place the Fluid Dip Tube about one

inch into the fluid bottle. Air bubbles should be seen coming from one of the

tubes at approximately one to two bubbles per second. Then, insert the diptube completely; no bubbles should be seen when the dip tube is completely

    inserted.

    Manual Set Point Adjustment

    Most printers produced by VIDEOJET

have a onesecond bias built into theSet Point. When the system software sets the Set Point after an Ink StreamCalibration, the set point is one second higher than the current ink time. This

condition is proper for much ink, but can cause pH balance instabilities in the

1692xx series of inks. The operator should manually adjust the Set Point tothe current ink time after each Ink Stream Calibration.

    Limit Idling Time

When the printer is not in production mode, the printer should be turned off.

Do not allow the printer to sit idle for extended periods of time. This practice

will require less makeup fluid, prohibit air from bubbling through the fluid

bottles, and will further reduce the potential for environmental contaminantsto enter the system.

    VIDEOJET

recommends the WaterBased Food Grade Printer is thoroughly

cleaned every 14 calendar days. Where the environment contains very highlevels of contaminants or when the recommendations in the above concerns

are not complied with, cleaning may be required more often. The purpose of

this cleaning is to remove any contaminants that may have entered the system.VIDEOJET

has developed a cleaning process to be used with the 1692xx

series of inks. Following this process will help remove contaminants from thesystem.

The pH of the ink and the makeup fluid must be measured each time the

system is cleaned. If the pH of the ink is below 9.3, the ink must be discarded. If the pH of the makeup fluid is below 10.2, the makeup fluid must be

    discarded.
