Food For Thought: January Empowering Women through Literacy In this issue of Food for Thought: Monthly Theme Millennium Development Goals Discussion Ques<ons Voices: In Her Own Words Women’s literacy improves livelihoods, leads to be>er child and maternal health, and favors girls’ access to educa?on. In short, newly literate women have a posi?ve ripple effect on all development indicators.”‐‐Irina Bokova, Director‐General of the UN Educa;onal, Scien;fic and Cultural Organiza;on (UNESCO) Literate women are more likely to send their children, especially their girls, to school. By acquiring literacy, women become more economically self‐reliant and more ac?vely engaged in their country’s social, poli?cal and cultural life.”‐‐United Na;ons Secretary‐General Ban Ki‐moon Monthly Theme: Literacy In war‐torn regions short of food and clean water, educa<on hardly seems a priority. AJer all, what good is literacy to women whose lives are at stake? At the start of the interna<onal charity movement aJer World War I, aid organiza<ons sought to meet basic needs, such as providing food, water, and clothing to those on the edge of life. But as soon as those aid organiza<ons pulled out of the region, the people con<nued to starve. Now we know educa?on, par?cularly literacy, provides a sustainable means of figh?ng poverty. Rather than offering a temporary fix, providing literacy to impoverished popula4ons helps people to help themselves. What is Literacy? The UN Educa<onal, Scien<fic and Cultural Organiza<on defines literacy as the "ability to iden<fy, understand, interpret, create, communicate, compute and use printed and wriYen materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a con<nuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and poten<al, and to par<cipate fully in their community and wider society."
