At AGRANA we …

█ utilise close to 100% of the agricultural

commodities we process and rely on low-

emission technologies in order to protect

the environment;

█ consider the interests of all of our stake-

holders and the societies in which we operate;

█ and maintain long-term partnerships with

suppliers.

These three statements are intended to serve

management and personnel as practical and

easy-to-apply guidelines with which to make their

daily activities sustainable.

Striving for sustainability has always represented

an integral element of AGRANA’s business model

due to its commercial activities, adding value

to agrarian commodities in the Sugar, Starch

and Fruit segments, and as a result of the

associated proximity to agricultural production.

As part of its sustainable management philosophy,

AGRANA has formulated three principles which

summarise its understanding of sustainability and

refl ect its most important aspects.

09

SUSTAINABILITY

For AGRANA, sustainability means acting in a

resource-sensitive and socially responsible manner

in all areas of business.

FOO

D S

OLU

TIO

Sustainable business

practices are an important

issue for AGRANA, the

requirements of which are

ideally served by means

of organic products. All

AGRANA business segments

have certifi ed organic

products in their portfolios.

and is consistent with the underlying principles

of ecologically sound business practices.

AGRANA Fruit Austria and Germany are Euro-

pean market leaders in organic fruit prepara-

tions. Organic fruit yoghurts are among

the most popular organic product categories

in many countries and very often contain fruit

preparations from AGRANA. AGRANA sources

its raw materials almost exclusively from

its own fruit plantations or from farmers with

whom it maintains long-term, partnership-

based business relationships. In Poland and the

Ukraine, AGRANA operates its own processing

plants in which the freshly harvested organic

fruit is sorted, cleaned and deep-frozen as soon

as it is picked.

The organic product line of AUSTRIA JUICE

includes apple and elderberry fruit juice con-

centrates as well as the extraction of organic

fl avourings during the production of apple juice.

Organic beet sugar from AGRANA is available

under a number of country-specifi c brands such

as Wiener Zucker or Koronás Cukor, targeting

the retail and the food processing industries of

six countries. AGRANA off ers organic cane sugar –

also on the basis of Fair Trade – in several sales

markets.

In its Starch segment, AGRANA processes organi-

cally-grown potatoes and corn to make organic

starches and organic starch derivatives. The

AGRANA facilities in Aschach an der Donau and

Gmünd were among the fi rst industrial process-

ing plants in Europe to be certifi ed as organic

processors.

In the interests of ensuring an economic cycle

which is as complete as possible, the refi ning

of organic sugar and organic starches also

entails the manufacture of by-products such as

organic animal feed and fertilisers. This nearly

complete processing of agricultural commodities

allows quantities of waste products to be reduced

already meets over 50% of the facility’s own

from AGRANA are also used in the manufacture

of food packaging materials, for example.

Customer-specifi c product applications are

AGRANA’s strength.

AGRANA processes mainly corn, waxy corn,

wheat and potatoes from regional agriculture

and therefore makes a signifi cant contribution

to the supply of sustainable products. Close

cooperation with customers and the develop-

ment of tailor-made solutions allow AGRANA

to continuously expand in the Starch segment

in the area of specialties, particularly organic

starch products.

AGRANA’s customers in various sectors of the

food industry rely on top quality native and

modifi ed starches, dried and liquid saccha-
