Readability of text types has proven a longstanding challenge to type design-ers and newspaper designers through the changes in design and technology

over the last century. The challenge springs from the reader’s desire to easily parse long passages of text, and the publisher’s desire to compose, print and deliver hundreds of thousands of cop-ies before the content becomes stale. Though everything else from good writing to the skilled use of paper, ink and pressure have a great deal to do with the readability of newspaper text, there is a still the fundamental challenge to the designers of typefaces and of newspapers in how to best create, select and compose type for text.

Good design in newspapers relies on a solid foundation of readable text, caption and agate typefaces. But the reader’s speedy and thorough navigation of the smaller type depends on well-selected and well-used display faces to guide the reader down to this text. As very few good text faces exist for newspaper use, it is hardly a sur-prise that few properly coordinated display faces from compatible and contrasting type families exist either. The newspaper designer is often faced with display font choices that limit their text choices, and text font choices that limit their display face choices. In addition, many de-signers are faced with “design inertia”, or out-dated typographic choices in use at a paper that cannot be changed for one reason or another.

The Font Bureau started looking at this prob-lem when The Poynter Institute for Media Studies held conferences on the topic in 1990 and 1994 to bring together many outstanding newspaper designers and type designers to fi nd out how to address the specifi c issues of newspa-per typography. The Font Bureau already had a

good base of knowledge from its custom work on many prominent papers. Roger Black, David Berlow, Mike Parker and Tobias Frere-Jones have all worked for over a decade on these types of problems. Matthew Carter of Carter & Cone, a veteran designer of newspaper types, was also involved in the early planning and ongoing work on the problem, and Cyrus Highsmith joined the e≠ort in 1998.

Part of the problem on the technical side was solved in 1990 with the publication of the PostScript Type One font format. Another part was solved by increased speed and power of Adobe PostScript raster image processors, which allowed composition and output to get up to the speeds required by newspapers. Then in 1996, Font Bureau and the Poynter Institute jointly created a project that involved Font Bureau de-sign of a news text family, Poynter Oldstyle, with an agreement to share resources and revenues in the interest of producing an introductory family of faces specifi cally for news text. Many newspa-pers joined in the e≠ort to test this fi rst font, en-suring that Font Bureau’s design would be broad enough to cover the needs of many newspapers.

The Poynter Oldstyle Family was released in 1997 with a partial compliment of styles re-quired for our initial clients. The style set rap-idly expanded to cover the numerous styles you see in the pages of this publication. Frere-Jones designed an instant classic newspaper face in Poynter Oldstyle Text, but that was not going to be enough for the decidedly thirsty market, so he and Font Bureau started working immediately on a sans serif companion, Poynter Gothic. The addition of this gothic allowed newspaper de-signers the luxury of a fabulous pair of families which, in combination with any one of the

numerous display types generally available, al-lowed for great composition opportunities for newspapers. But there was considerably more work for the Font Bureau’s design sta≠ in co-ordinating and advising clients on display font choices.

Two things became apparent from these ef-forts leading up to 1999. One was that many cli-ents wanted to stick with Poynter for the head-lines and other display faces. The other thing that became apparent was that in multi-daily cities, newspapers were reluctant to use the same text typeface as their cross-town rivals, and so more variety and interchangeability was required from the fonts o≠ered by Font Bureau. Frere-Jones, Berlow, Carter and Highsmith worked out a scheme to expand the Readability series, which now includes three complete serif text families and a fourth in the works. Even more work was done to develop compatible dis-play faces. Font Bureau now o≠ers a full dozen families for display, including Poynter Oldstyle Display, Bureau Grotesque, Interstate, Benton Gothic, Old Modern, and more.

These newspaper Readability and Display fac-es, in combination with our custom services and other types, including Carter & Cone’s hugely popular Miller, have put Font Bureau in the mid-dle of the development of several hundred news-paper designs and redesigns over the last fi ve years. We plan to continue listening closely to our clients, and to continue keeping type de-signers involved in developing faces which aim to solve the complex design problems faced by newspapers. Newspaper and magazine art directors have been searching for original and more elegant alternatives to Corona and the old newspaper designs, but have

found that most obvious candidates – Garamond or Goudy Old Style – seem too spindly and bookish for their purposes. Choice of a model for the text face has been guided by growing popularity of Times Roman— although this design is not wholly satisfactory for a number of reasons.

Font Bureau believes that the appeal of Times comes from its grounding in the Dutch types of the seventeenth century, with their classical combination of economy and readability. Economy is helped by the diagonal emphasis in oldstyle design as it moves the widest part of curves to the corners of the character, relaxing the buildup of critical elements at the widest part of each character.

As readability depends above all on familiarity, Font Bureau’s Tobias Frere-Jones used the work of Hendrik van den Keere, the 16th-century originator of the large x-height Dutch romans, as a starting point. Van den Keere’s practical proportions prefigure the requirements of newspaper text, finished with the elegance and high style that we associate with his French contemporaries Garamond and Granjon. Van den Keere’s work survives only as a series of steel punches in the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, and in the off-spring of his designs, which include Times Roman.

Font Bureau has prepared four closely-spaced grades tuned to the variety of performance to be expected from a range of platemaking technologies and presses. Newspapers using transitional or hybrid output methods should really benefit from use of these fonts. A paper that

prints feature or advance pages directly to negatives might do so with one version of the font, while choosing a lighter version for pages that go through paste-up (which typically increases dot gain and weight of the type). Text can be free-ly moved from section to section without affecting copyfit, since all weights are designed on a single set of character widths. Properly used, these fonts guarantee a consistent quality of text reproduction from front to back. Papers using only one production method still benefi t from the grades, as they can choose the weight best matching their inking.

The four weights of roman are accompanied by a single weight of a matching serif bold and four weights of an original italic, centering on open and familiar letterforms to guarantee emphasis and readability when used for a word, caption or paragraph of text.

Since familiarity is the most important element of readability, the most logical starting point for a matching sans serif family for the Poynter series was

in the gothics developed by Morris Fuller Benton at the American Type Founders Company in the earliest part of the 20th century. Starting in 1902 with the boldface Franklin Gothic, Benton set the tone for the series that were to follow, including News Gothic, Monotone Gothic, Alternate Gothic, and others. These related families set

the standard for American sans serifs until Helvetica and European Modernism were imported in the 1950s, and are still popular for use in newspapers and magazines today.

In 1996, Tobias Frere-Jones became aware of the pres-ence of Benton’s drawings in the Smithsonian. Using the 5- and 6-point Boston Gothic drawings as a basis, Frere-Jones drew the Poynter Gothics. Keeping the large x-height and other concessions to less-than ideal printing conditions, additional improvements for the specifi c problems of ty-

pography on newsprint were made, including the simplifi -cation of more complex characters such as the lowercase g, and more open terminals on many characters, further increasing readability.

Poynter Gothic is the ideal companion for Poynter Oldstyle Text, Benton Modern, or Bureau Roman, for use in captions, information graphics, or as emphasis in text. Optional tabular fi gures also make it an ideal choice for tables and columns of fi gures.

To create the ideal display family to match Poynter Oldstyle Text, designer Frere-Jones decided to follow the most logical path and adapt the text styles for

use at larger sizes. This entailed increasing the contrast in stroke weight, decreasing the x-height, narrowing the overall proportions for a greater character count, thinning out serifs, and making details more subtle. The end result

is an elegant and refi ned oldstyle with subtle delicacy while maintaining the strong underlying structure and stylistic neutrality required of types in use at newspapers. Poynter Oldstyle Display is a departure from “stiffer” moderns, such as Century, and “softer” oldstyles, such as Goudy Oldstyle, Cheltenham, or Palatino which have been popular for use in headlines for the past fi fty years.

Originally available in three weights, a series of commis-sions have expanded the family to three widths, plus italics for the normal widths: twelve styles in all. The delicate na-ture of the hairlines makes the family best suited for use at 24 point and above. A full set of ligatures and an alternate, long-tailed Q, make the character set complete enough for even the most demanding requirements of composition.

Poynter Oldstyle’s growth in popularity among news-papers, prompted Font Bureau to turn its attention to developing additional series that would offer the

same technical advantages as the Poynter Oldstyle series – most importantly the closely-spaced grades – while giving aesthetic alternatives for art directors and publication de-signers who do not wish to use a classical oldstyle.

The design of Benton Modern was started in 1997 by Tobias Frere-Jones, who began by examining Century Expanded Roman, long a popular choice for newspaper text. Designed by the father-and-son team of Linn Boyd Benton

and Morris Fuller Benton, it was released by American Type Founders in 1900. Contemporary digital versions, while re-producing the shapes in their crudest essence, have ignored the Bentons’ careful adjustments for text sizes. This new design, Benton Modern, summarizes the late-nineteenth century forms of text faces in a single, durable rendition. It is not just a more careful revival of Century Expanded, but one that directly addresses the needs of newspaper text.

Frere-Jones deemed Century Expanded Italic to be too fussy and decorative to serve properly in a newspaper set-ting, so he instead chose Century Schoolbook Italic as his

model. This face was designed by Morris Fuller Benton after copious research into eyesight and readability, and was re-leased by ATF in 1921. The italic is available in four grades, matching the roman. Realizing that a single weight of bold would not be adequate to match four grades of roman, Christian Schwartz drew the bold in four grades, carefully matching serif weight and hairlines to each grade of roman.

Benton Modern’s narrow proportions make for excellent copyfi t, while its open counters promote readability. Since it is drawn with the same cap-height as Poynter Oldstyle Text, it is equally compatible with Poynter Gothic.

As more and more newspapers have switched presses to the 50" web, columns have narrowed and space has been at a premium. Font Bureau aimed to allevi-

ate this problem with the development of Bureau Roman, the narrowest text family in the readablity series.

Like Benton Modern, work on Bureau Roman started with the careful analysis of a typeface created by Linn Boyd Benton and Morris Fuller Benton and released by American Type Founders. In 1909, the Bentons decided to expand on the popular Century family by introducing Century Oldstyle, a typeface that closely matched Century Expanded in gen-

eral proportions, but was fi nished with heavily bracketed oldstyle serifs and softened weight transitions in the place of the sharp 19th century-modern aesthetic of Century Expanded. While not an oldstyle in the strictest sense, as the emphasis of weight on the strokes is vertical rather than diagonal, Century Oldstyle has the softness and approach-ability of one, and its popularity for newspaper text rivaled that of Century Expanded.

Bureau Roman was drawn by Font Bureau’s David Berlow, assisted by designer Cyrus Highsmith, based on the small-est text sizes of Century Oldstyle. Its proportions have been

narrowed even further from those found in the source mate-rial, fi tting as many characters as possible per line without sacrifi cing aesthetics or readability.

Originally commissioned for text at the Washington Post, Bureau Roman has been redrawn and refi ned in fi ve grades with matching italics and small caps. A single bold style has been prepared to work with all grades. Monospaced fi gures in all styles make the family well-suited for use in tables and charts. Like Benton Modern, it is drawn with the same cap-height as Poynter Oldstyle Text and is equally compatible with Poynter Gothic.

Display typography in newspapers has long been char-acterized by high-contrast serif faces, in the sharp nineteenth century tradition following Didot and

Bodoni. Font Bureau’s David Berlow has created Old Modern, a display family for use with Benton Modern and Bureau Roman that exemplifi es this style. Looking back to Roman

No. 596, a workhorse from the earliest days of ATF, Berlow drew a set of three weights in three widths. Roman No. 596 appeared to be the best choice for revival as it has a more distinctive personality and considerably more warmth than many of the more geometric display moderns of the period, whose coldness has only been exaggerated in digital inter-

pretations. Old Modern has a serious, authoritative tone without looking boring.

Stock quotes, sports scores, and other information set in very small text demand a combination of extreme readability and extremely effi cient use of

space. Using Poynter Gothic as a starting point, David Berlow developed Poynter Agate. Intended for use at sizes between 5 and 6.5 point, Berlow has turned the limitations of drawing a typeface for use at very small sizes and under diffi cult printing conditions into design advantages.

Since tables are usually set with little or no leading,

Poynter Agate’s short descenders and large x-height keep the lowercase characters recognizable even under less-than-ideal composition and printing conditions. Fine ad-justments have been made to the character shapes to keep counterforms from disappearing or losing shape as the ink soaks into the paper after printing.

Poynter Agate is available in four grades of the regular weight, all with monospaced fi gures for better setting of tables. Each grade comes in normal, condensed and com-

pressed widths with two matching bold weights (as there is not enough room on the compressed width for a bold compressed). The bold weights for the regular and con-densed widths are duplexed or spaced on the same width as the regular, making the character count constant be-tween the bold and regular weights. Standard and AP fraction sets are available for the entire family. Alternate versions with shorter descenders are also available, and italics for all styles will be released in the coming months.
