“If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” Zig Ziglar
If politics shape Canberra and the yuppies and celebs call the shots in Sydney, food shapes almost everything in Melbourne, from social events and calendars to trends and policies.
Melbourne is a melting pot of food destinations, thanks to her rich ethnic diversity and ability to make food the central focus of almost every social occasion in what is the world’s most liveable city.
Melbournians will go to great lengths for food and will stand in the rain for more than an hour waiting to try the latest offering on the vibrant and constantly evolving food scene.
And we’ll try almost anything: on-trend kerbside food truck offerings, drive-through coffee, high-end degustation menus, pop-up market food and soft tacos by the bucket load.
The term ‘food snob’ can be used too loosely sometimes, but in Melbourne you will tend to be judged by where you buy your coffee or dumplings rather than what sort of car you drive or where you live. In saying that, the food scene here is also a great leveller and can be the glue that connects people from all walks of life.

WHILE COFFEE IS ONE OF MELBOURNE’S GREATEST
OBSESSIONS, FOOD IS ALSO A MAJOR DRIVER IN OUR FINE
CITY AND CAN BE USED AS AN INTERNAL COMPASS TO KNOW
WHICH SUBURB YOU’RE ENTERING OR WHICH FOODIE EVENT
YOU SHOULD HAVE ENTERED ON YOUR CALENDAR.

FEATURE STORY
A foodie’s road map to Melbourne
From the original migrant food destinations of Victoria Street, to world-famous Lygon Street and traditional Sydney Road, we now have invisible ‘foodie’ boundaries across this city of ours, transcending suburban lines and redefining our hamlets into the best breakfast and coffee spot to the best place for a wine and endless laneways jostling for the best-dinner-in-town trophy.
Interestingly, there is no one trend stealing the limelight among Melbourne’s eclectic mix of foodie heroes, who are constantly blurring the lines and pushing the boundaries for the next taste sensation or dining movement from abroad.
And everyone wants a piece of the action here: Jamie Oliver’s made his mark, Heston’s had a go and the newest darling of food TV, Rachel Khoo recently filmed her SBS series Kitchen Notebook Melbourne here, portraying both our history and latest trends.
Melbourne’s food history is as old as the city itself and, unlike other well-known food destinations around the world, includes rather than excludes.
You don’t have to be a celebrity or well healed to try the latest on-trend restaurant, you just have to be prepared to line up and wait your turn. Melbourne is a city that has mastered the ‘no booking’ policy in a country where the natives usually don’t tolerate queuing for anything.
And despite a handful of high end, once-in-a-lifetime dinners, you can get a smashing meal in Melbourne that won’t damage your back pocket.

MELBOURNE’S FOOD HISTORY IS AS OLD AS THE CITY ITSELF AND, UNLIKE OTHER WELL-KNOWN FOOD DESTINATIONS AROUND THE WORLD, INCLUDES RATHER THAN EXCLUDES.
FEATURE STORY
OMAG
The Melbourne food scene most certainly prides itself on accessible and inexpensive great-quality food.
Last summer’s night markets were a great example of this. Come rain, hail or shine (and you can get all of these in an afternoon in Melbourne) food lovers came in the thousands to try the scrumptious offerings of the twilight food market scene. Melbourne’s Birrarung Marr exploded with 10 days of 50 plus food stalls and trucks, reminiscent of a scene straight from the hawker market streets of Singapore, offering Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Burmese and Nepalese – the entire Asian map in a funky takeaway box!
Importantly, this hugely popular outdoor food festival perfectly complements the 150-year-old history of Asian food in Melbourne and proves there’s always room for one more dumpling.
And if it’s dumplings you’re after Springvale has long been a mecca for these tiny bundles of deliciousness. With more than 60 restaurants, Springvale punches above its weight for authentic Asian food - Yum Cha is not just for CBD’s Chinatown!
Across the Nepean Highway, foodies are being rewarded for choosing a slower, leafier lifestyle with exceptional cafes and restaurants popping up throughout the southeastern suburbs.
Mentone has well and truly placed itself on the foodie map with offerings of on-trend culinary delights from the likes of the Burger Lab – where you’ll be treated with ‘real’ American burger, according to the locals. And nearby The Corner Store has all the buzz of its city counterparts, serving up all-day fare with friendless and convenience to boot.
Fancy fare is also accessible in the suburbs with bay side eaters such as The Rocks in Mornington flying the flag for long lunches and fine dining.
Mornington has long been a magnet for food and wine lovers with oodles of cellar doors and cafés doing their thing.
A wine and food tour of the Mornington Peninsula region… put that in your diary for next time.
Moving away from the bay, Beaconsfield has also placed itself firmly on the foodie scene with the boys from O.My. This degustation-only restaurant, run by three brothers in their 20s, emphasises the ‘grow local’ philosophy and has just been named on the Age Good Food Guide Top 10 Hot and New list for 2015 – go you good things!
And once you’ve had your fill of scrumptious culinary fare you’ll be in need of a refreshing ale with friends. Search no further than the very hip Public Brewery in Croydon. This casual microbrewery, located in our northeastern hamlet, claims to have a new twist on an old concept… nice work.
So, there you have it: a snap shot of what makes up just a small part of the world-class and dynamic Melbourne food scene.
No doubt your weekend and eat-out calendar is now chock-a-block full with an array of fabulous eateries from Croydon to Mornington, Springvale to Beaconsfield and beyond - and we’ve barely made it past entrée!
Let’s get together and do it again sometime soon…

Top five renovations to add Value to your Property
WITH THE INCREASE IN ‘HOME RENOVATION’ SHOWS, MOST HOME OWNERS MAY THINK THAT RENOVATING IS EASY, QUICK AND CHEAP. HOWEVER, AS MOST REAL ESTATE AGENTS WILL TELL YOU, NOT EVERYONE HAS THE BEST IDEAS, PATIENCE OR MOST IMPORTANTLY, CAPABILITY TO PULL IT OFF.
Renovating your home can range from changing the entry tiles to building a plunge pool in the back yard. Whilst these may be of immense value to you while you live in the home, they may not be what a prospective buyer values in your suburb. To get the most bang for your renovating buck, consider these best home improvements.
1. Existing systems
Ensure major systems such as plumbing, heating, electrical are in working order before considering cosmetic improvements.
2. External replacement projects
Replacing the garage or front doors, windows, gutters, barge boards and fascias give you more added value than remodeling. They also increase curb appeal.
3. Extra bedrooms
When remodeling, adding a bedroom, study, or living area is the best bet. Data provider Core Logic RP Data reports 72.5 percent of the cost can be recouped at sale.
4. Extra bathroom
Core Logic RP Data reports a half bath may add up to 10.5 percent to a home’s value, whilst a full bath can add around 20 percent.
5. Kitchen improvements
As the definite heart of the modern home, ensuring a kitchen stands out is imperative. Those on a budget may consider replacing dated vinyl flooring, backsplash and cabinetry. New paint, tap ware, sink and appliances are easy ways to make the kitchen shine.
There are a myriad of home improvements that can add value to your home, from the addition of an alarm system all the way to the installation of solar panels and double glazed windows, but don’t go overboard with the project. The value of your home is partially determined by your neighbor’s homes, so it’s important not to make improvements that bring your home’s value significantly over the general value of others in around you. If unsure, call your trusted Real Estate advisor for an opinion based on the current market.
