With the sun shining and the mercury peaking at around 30°C, Folklorama hit the fields of Assiniboine Park to help make Canad Day Picnic in the Park the coolest place to be.

The heat was nothing for Folklorama Ambassadors, who had donned their full cultural regalia to greet the many families taking in the park’s entertainment. The Folklorama Llama also made an appearance, rallying kids to jump and dance along to the afternoon’s music.

The Folklorama tent was packed with talent throughout the day, featuring Clyde Heerah’s Caribbean steel pan, a capoeira demonstration by Viva Brasil Canada Inc., and a stirring interactive performance by Ça Claque!. As well, a musical chair competition and limbo contest got visitors moving to help beat the heat.

Happy 145th, Canada!

FOLKLORAMA AMBASSADORS GIVING BACK TO WINNIPEG

Folklorama Ambassadors have been keeping busy this summer, stepping out of their traditional pavilion duties to help out with different communities, causes, and events around Winnipeg.

“Folklorama Ambassadors do so much work within their own communities in Winnipeg, so we wanted to offer them a different opportunity, one where they could give back to Winnipeg itself,” says Olga Pogrebinskaia, Festival Services Coordinator at Folklorama.

Ambassadors have made appearances at Siloam Mission, the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival (Kidsfest), Winnipeg Harvest, and Bike to Work Day, lending a helping

hand wherever they’re needed and offering much needed support to organizations that need it.

Even as the Folklorama festival gets nearer, our Ambassadors are still finding time to help out around the city. Watch for them at this year’s Winnipeg Fringe Festival!

FOLKLORAMA BRINGS NEW WAYS TO TOUR THE WORLD

Folklorama is adding even more ways for travellers to enjoy this year’s festival, by adding two new tours to the VIP World Tour line-up. New this year, the VIP Cycle Tours and VIP Independent Travellers Tours bring dynamic new options for those wanting to experience all that Folklorama has to offer – diverse culture, live entertainment and delicious food – in style!

“Folklorama brings in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and by adding two new specialty tours to the VIP World Tour program, we are able to offer even more exciting ways for those people to access the festival,” says Murray Greenfield, Director of Tourism at Folklorama. “The VIP Independent Travellers and VIP Cycle Tours are just two of the ways we have diversified this

year’s festival, allowing us to cater the Folklorama experience to an even wider audience.”

The new VIP Cycle Tours let travellers explore Folklorama’s many pavilions through self-powered transportation. These tours include visits to two pavilions that guests will travel

to and between on their own bicycles. Cycle tours also include a non-alcoholic beverage with a meal and a scheduled show at the first pavilion and a non-

alcoholic beverage with a dessert and a scheduled show at the second pavilion.

The VIP Independent Travellers Tours are for anyone wanting to join a group for a fun night out as a solo traveller. Tours include all the elements of

Folklorama’s regular VIP World Tours, including stops at three pavilions, but are geared towards those who are looking to fly solo. Travellers can experience the fun of Folklorama while meeting new people!

Returning this year are the VIP Party Tours, VIP Wheelchair Accessible Tours, and the ever-popular VIP Late Night Tours. All VIP World Tours offer new pavilion destinations each week, and include quick and easy access to the festival by bypassing lines at pavilion doors, reserved seating with table service, and transportation from an accessible location.

VIP World Tours can be booked by calling 204.982.6222 or toll-free at 1.800.665.0234. Reservations can also be booked online at www.folklorama.ca. Space is limited, so those interested are encouraged to book well in advance before seats sell out!

For two days in August, Winnipeggers will have the chance to take in two wonderful and critically-acclaimed Korean films. Haeundae (2009), South Korea’s first disaster film, and Take Off (2009), the story of the South Korea’s first national Olympic ski jump team, will be presented at J.B. Mitchell School on the afternoons of August 12 and 18, respectively, and all are welcome to attend.

The Consulate General of the Republic Korea in Toronto are sponsoring the screening of these films, which they invite the public to enjoy at no cost. Please note, however, that seating is limited and offered on a first-come first-served basis.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTGreetings!

It is hard to believe that summer is here and we are on the cusp of celebrating our 43rd annual Folklorama festival!

The energy is building in the city as we count down to two phenomenal weeks of delicious cultural dishes, fabulous entertainment, fascinating

cultural displays, and all-around high spirits. This is all preceded with a bang on Saturday, August 4 when all of our pavilions come together at The Forks in a stunning display of diversity at our Folklorama Kick-off, presented by Manitoba Lotteries.

While the festival is a joyous time, it truly would not be possible without the hard work and commitment of the dedicated Folklorama volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year to be able to share their culture through their pavilion. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of these incredible volunteers for enriching the festival with the beauty of their culture.

I would also like to thank my fellow board members and the Folklorama staff for their continued hard work and commitment to the organization. Folklorama is fortunate to have such a dedicated team!

See you at the festival!

Best wishes,
