President’s Report

Greetings all. Your Folk Fed gnomes have been very busy. We are looking forward to seeing “the Chris Kempster project” - a reprint of the Henry Lawson songbook with additional material - come to fruition. The group of volunteers work-ing on this are doing an amazing job. The book will be reprinted shortly and launched at Port Fairy next year. You will read lots about this fine project in coming issues.

Coming issues will also tell you more about the touring circuit we are committed to establishing in NSW for all folk perform-ers. This is a new initiative but based on an old idea and a desire to make more opportu-nitiesfor folk musicians to play in regional areas. More details to come.

We look forward to seeing lots of you at “Folk at the Plaza” on 3rd November at Lane Cove Plaza between 10am and 1pm. We have a great host of performers who have been generous enough to offer their talents for nought but the joy of playing for people in the interest of spreading the good wordabout folk music. Come and be part of it all.

Christina Mimmocchi

Folk Federation Committee 2008BRUCE CAMERON

I am a musician, radio broadcaster, folk club organiser,

festival presenter, event manager, trainer and a recovering public servant.

I live in Bathurst and perform in several folk-flavoured bands ranging from - Australian collected music, western swing and

Asturian dance tunes to jug band music and the occasional Shaker hymn, all with vary-ing degrees of success.

I also present a folk music program called ‘Come All Ye’ on community radio 2MCE-FM. At various times I have held executive committee positions with the Austra-lian Folk Trust, Folk Alliance Australia, Bathurst Arts Council, Bathurst Folk Club and several community groups in Bathurst.

The Folk Federation has an important role to play in promoting and supporting the folk arts and it’s good fun to be part of this team.

Festivals, Workshops, Schools An Early Taste Of The National 08!!!!

Crikey, there’s a lot of talent in the folk world - and much of that talent has applied for next year’s National Folk Festival. Artistic Director Dave O’Neill has been inundated; here are just a few of the bookings to date, to whet your appetite…. The Dancehall Racketeers The Baylor Brothers on their own are a knockout; joined with the rest of the talent in the Dancehall Racketeers they make the room rock with energy with their irresistible mix of rockabilly, country, cajun, and swing, through to rock, R&B and the blues. Multi-award winners, the Racketeers are Australia’s premier western swing band, A Smoggie and a Geordie.

Vin Garbutt, Middlesbrough’s favourite son and internationally acclaimed, Vin is one of the most popular and individualistic singer/musician/ songwriters to come out of England’s industrial north- east. His songs proclaim his humanity and perception – he’s the gadfly of injustice and untruth and the very soul of generosity and compassion. He’s also possessed of a frighteningly quick sense of humour and has been known to induce convulsions of mirth in even the most staid of audiences. He’s also one of the best whistle players on the circuit.

Bob Fox is a superb singer/guitarist and interpreter of both traditional and contemporary folk songs and one of the finest cultural ambassadors to emerge from the working class of North- East England’s mining communities. He has a fine sense of justice and his choice of repertoire explores the peaks and troughs of the human condition – as well as some very funny and very beautiful material. He has a voice that is sheer bliss to listen to.

and from Canada…Genticorum - Alexandre De Grabois-Garand, Yann Falquet, and Pascal Gemme, firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, epitomise everything that is wonderful and exciting about Quebecoise music; the energetic and original traditional ‘power trio’ plus the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures. Weaving wooden flute, fiddle, acoustic guitar, jaw harp, bass and foot percussion with strong vocal harmonies, they offer a blend of traditional songs and tunes as well as original compositions. Their distinctive sound, sense of humour and stage presence make them a supreme crowd pleaser.

Illawarra Folk FestivalTickets for the 2008 Festival are now

available for only $65 – only 1000 in the Stage 1 release. From 1st December to 15th January, more tickets will be released, at $80. After that, full price is $95. Secure online payment can be made at www.illawarrafolkclub.org.au – they can also be bought from the Bulli Heritage Hotel and Bulli Post Office.

Volunteer applications close on 10th November: Bob 0412 32 0413, 4296 6115, [email protected] or www.illawarrafolkclub.org.au/volunteero8.htm

The Duhks The most vital acoustic music being made today acknowledges its predecessors and lives in the here and now. For four years now, The Duhks, the band of five skilled, high-energy, tattooed twenty-somethings from Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been riveting audiences and winning staunch fans across North America and around the world with just that kind of music.

The Duhks are: Tanya Elizabeth, Jordan McConnell, Leonard Podolak, Scott Senior and Sarah Dugas Caledonia calls…and if you come across a four-metre high Scot accompanied by an equally enormous shaggy dog don’t be alarmed, it’s just Big Rory and his faithful (albeit poorly trained) dog Ochie. Seeing is believing…or not…However, if your lunch is threatened by a pair of enormous seagulls (they do grow ‘em big in Scotland) you would be well advised to run away and hide – “mineminemine” takes on a whole new dynamic….

The National Folk Festival 2008 runs from 20 – 24 March and on-line tickets sales will be available from 1st December at www.folkfestival.asn.au .

Bob Fox and Vin Garbutt

Correction: October issuePlease note ommittance of two per-formers in Yarri of Wiradjuri at Kan-garoo Valley, Christine Wheeler and Robin Connaughton. Sonia Bennett was not involved. Sorry folks.Editor

Singing the Land[From Regional Arts NSW] Singing the Land: The Power of Performance in Aboriginal Life is Jill Stubington’s important study of the culture of music and dance in Aboriginal life, and a tribute to the pioneer musicologists with whom she worked, especially the eminent Alice Moyle, and to those musicians and elders who taught her the multiple meanings behind the traditions of ceremony and the pleasures of making music. In its engaging 320 pages it outlines the history of diverse musical practices of different regions, and provides translations, listening guides to currently available CDs, and 40 pages of notation. Jill Stubington’s aim in this is to provide a way for young Aboriginals to recapture their traditional music and a way for white listeners to find a way to listen. Brendan’s IdeasA profile of Brisbane folkie Brendan Williams in Folk Rag (Sept. 2007) has a list of ‘future projects I would like to see happen’. They include: accommodation for touring musicians so they could do a full week of workshops;after Australian instrument makers use the wood from one tree to make a group of instruments, touring a band with these, doing songs promoting the merits of value adding. He says, ‘one tree can be made into $100,000 worth of musical instruments, and the tax on it is the same as turning thousands of trees into wood chips.’ an Australian Show which includes traditional bush dances and contemporary folk songs tour Queensland towns.

Gosford DanceThe November dance is Guest Callers Night. Have you ever fancied calling a dance? Sydney Coves, our band for 10th November, is graciously encouraging anyone wishing to have a go to call a dance on the night. If you would like to be part of the programme, please tell Robyn, 4344 6484, stating which dance or dances you would like to call. Opportunities for beginners to call with live music and dancers are very few and far between so do take advantage of it. You will need to know the dance thoroughly and you might like to consider preparing a prompt card, containing just the major calls. So don’t be shy - you have time to practice and a very friendly group of dancers to help you. Dancers, please consider the special ‘Two for One’ offer. ‘This has been specifically introduced to encourage people who haven’t attended the dance in yonks to return to the fold and, of course, to encourage those who have never experienced our bush dance, to do so at a very low cost. Two people will be admitted to the dance for the standard single ticket price of $15 on request, if one of them has not been to the dance in the last three years. We will ask for their name and email address, so that we have a record of their attendance and can send them reminders of future dances.’ (Forward planning: the December dance will be a Contra with Pastrami on Ryebuck and Julie Bishop.) Award winning singer, guitarist, songwriter and historian Dan McKinnon hails from the Canadian Maritimes, an area rich in the musical and cultural traditions of the North Atlantic. His warm baritone voice, superb guitar arrangements and original compositions have won this native Nova Scotian widespread praise. Dan’s most recent recording “Fields of Dreams and Glory”, recorded and produced at The Millstream in Toronto by Paul Mills has recently been nominated for two MIANS awards - Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia: Male Artist Recording of the Year and Folk/Roots Recording of the Year.

Margaret Walters has been giving this album a listen. She writes:

Dan McKinnon is a native of Nova Scotia, and in the tradition of many North American songwriters, he’s a storyteller, a philosopher with a fine ringing baritone voice that immediately recalls Stan Rogers and James Keelaghan. Dan grew up with music and a firm grounding in traditional song always makes for a fine songwriter.

Dan poignant historical songs tell of 41,000 war brides leaving war-torn Europe for the relative abundance of Canada, following their soldier husbands (“Kith and Kin”); of Merchant Marines in WW2 whose contribution was not recognised by the Canadian government until 55 years after the war (“Many Miles to Go”); and the tale of a Nova Scotian bride-to-be lost at sea for 3 months 1868/69 (“Angeline”).

Many of his songs use the imagery of the road to gain insights into human relationships, his thoughtful reflections about ordinary lives and life’s journeys, giving the songs universal appeal.

“Aesops Fables” (learning insights on the human condition from stories from his grandfather); “The Same Pillow” (a couple celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary); “The Lovers of Our Time” (faithfulness/building solid foundations); “Wandering Days” (life’s journey – getting of wisdom)

“The Road Less Travelled” (tackling new roads); “Fields of Dreams and Glory” (associations of fields seen from a train: children’s playgrounds, lovers’ strolling parks, soldiers’ drilling grounds).

There are two songs by Archie Fisher (Scotland): “Every Man’s Heart” (the four phases of a woman’s life - maiden, lover, mother, companion), and “Border River” (you the river, me the road).

There is one traditional song “Rose of Allendale” (faithfulness and the traveller)

There’s a couple of humorous songs on the album: “This Side of the Sod” surviving turning 50; and “The Ballad of the Simple Sailor” by Jim Stewart – a hilarious look at a country lad’s venture on board ship. I understand Dan sings a lot of sea songs and shanties which will endear him to Sydney audiences.

The tour starts on the 2nd November at the Maldon Folk Festival, then several dates in New South Wales, ACT and Victoria: Nov 8th, Thursday - The Yass Repertory Theatre, Yass, NSW; Nov 9th, Friday - House Concert, Ryde, NSW;Nov 10th, Saturday - House Concert, Yatteyattah, NSW; Nov 11th, Sunday - Katinya Environment Centre, Moruya, NSW; Nov 14th, Wednesday - Uniting Church Hall, Eden, NSWNov 15th, Thursday - Briagolong Hotel, Briagolong, VIC;Nov 16th, Friday - The Ruffy Produce Store, Ruffy, VIC;Nov 17th, Saturday - Don’t Tell Tom, Brunswick, VIC (guest: Bruce Watson)Nov 22nd, Thursday - Bendigo Folk Club, Bendigo, VIC;Nov 23rd, Friday - The Merry Muse, Turner, ACT;Nov 24th, Saturday - House Concert, Lawson, NSW;Nov 25th, Sunday - Cornucopia Café, Gladesville, NSW; Nov 29th, Thursday - Yuin Folk Club, Valley Edge Coffee Shop, Cobargo, NSW;Nov 30th, Friday - Diggers Club, Wollongong, NSWDec 1st, Saturday - House Concert, Nowra, NSW.

Sonia Bennett Singer, songwriter, artist and bush regenerator. She points out that it is easier and less costly to look after healthy, protected bushland that to fix it after it has been damaged or destroyed.

She has a glorious voice, rich and powerful, with a wonderful falsetto that gives her an enormous range. She is also a fine songwriter composing tunes to other people’s words as well as her own.

cd reviewsSharon Shannon’s new release ‘RENEGADE’ is her first studio album since 2003. She is joined by Michael McGoldrick on flute and whistles, Dezi Donnelly on fiddle and Sharon’s longtime guitarist Jim Murray, and has a guest list that includes Justin Adams, John Reynolds, 2Play,Roachie, saxman Richie Buckley and Donald Shaw. RENEGADE, a heady mix of traditional Irish with hip-hop beats, reggae, jazz and world music inflections, features new original material by the quartet and will be featured in their September-October tour of Australia and New Zealand. Fellow musician and touring performer Gibb Todd gave it the thumbs-up.

The definition of ”renegade” as given in Chambers Encyclopaedic Dictionary; “A person who deserts religious/political group etc. to which they belong, to join enemy/rival group.” Laying that definition onto the musical world from which this band comes, they have not so much joined “a enemy/rival group” as to have re-defined the tradition to which they belong, in a glorious, riotous celebration of their roots, and created a musical vision all of their own. Listening to this CD it’s hard for me to believe that it’s a studio recording, their enjoyment of the shared experience of playing together is almost palpable. It feels and sounds like an almighty session, and they are no strangers to almighty sessions!

I’ve known this band as members of other ensembles over the past 10 yrs or so, and have always been a huge fan of each of them, but this combo. just takes the cake. I heard and experienced them last year on their first Australian tour together,

Fresh Salt - CD of music from Indigenous AustraliaReview of compilation CD

This enhanced compilation CD is only available as a bonus with two purchases from Secret Street. It includes Joe Geia, Kyle Slabb, Huey Benjamin, Pigram Brothers, Glenn Skuthorpe, Wild Water and others, 13 tracks in all. From a traditional island to reggae to contemporary sounds there’s ample variety here and the superb music is excellently produced. This CD says so much about the quality and individuality of our home-grown music making that I am surprised the CD is not marketed as an indepen-dent product, as I think it would do well as such. Check out their website.

at the Brisbane Irish Centre. After listening to many great bands over the past 45 yrs (even considering my advancing senility) I can’t remember feeling so lifted and exhilarated by a live musical experience, as much as this one did, and I have to say the Renegade CD endorses everything I remember. Finally, I was knocked out by the debut vocal excursions of Michael McGoldrick and Jim Murray, but then I ask myself, why am I surprised with anything they do? Makes me wonder what is next - just how much better it can get than this! Don’t miss them, if you do you’ll be sorry.Gibb Todd Windaroo August 2007.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending a weekend on a houseboat with friends. Not that it was the first time. I can recommend it to anyone if you need a relaxing weekend. It gave me the opportunity though to listen to some of the new CDs at Folk Trax. I am really impressed with the new CD from Tiffany Eckhardt. The title alone, in this case, matched my “perfect” weekend on the house boat, ‘perfect day’. This is Tiffany’s sixth CD and her best yet. It will appear shortly on the Folk Trax website. Here are a few more new ones you can expect to see at Folk Trax. Frank Povah ‘got the mornin’ blues’, after 50 years of blues this is his first CD.

Another artist who has been threatening to record a CD for about 25 years and finally did it with two releases is South Australia’s own ‘One Man Band’ - Dan Burt. He released two multifarious music-hall CDs called ‘A Little Bit of Cucumber’ and ‘The Hole In The Elephant’s Bottom’. These two CDs include some of the best music-hall, variety and popular music, mainly from around a century ago. Watch out for them. Also new is a compilation CD with hard-hitting songs for a social change and a new Australia.

Yes just in time for the Election Blues. It’s called ‘Stand up & Shout’ and released by Rouseabout.

Finally the Ishbel MacAskill CD ‘Essentially Ishbel’ also will appear at Folk Trax. TA CD mainly in Scottish Gaelic. This is a beautifully crafted CD, well worth having a listen to. Then of course there are the new releases from Planet.

Each month we see a variety of new CDs from new and established artists and labels
