Engaging Washington-area audiences since 1977, the Folger Consort is early music ensemble-in-residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Founding Artistic Directors Robert Eisenstein and Christopher Kendall create programs that offer opportunities to discover and enjoy music from the medieval, Renaissance, and baroque periods. Whether presenting concerts in the ensemble’s intimate home, the Folger’s Elizabethan-styled theater, or in the splendid reaches of Washington National Cathedral, the Folger Consort continues its tradition of bringing internationally noted guest artists to Washington, DC to join in its “early music chamber society.”

Beyond its concert series, the Folger Consort strives to deepen audiences’ understanding and appreciation of early music through seminars, discussions, recordings, radio broadcasts, and unique collaborations with other programs of the Folger Shakespeare Library. music from 13th - and 15th- Century Spain

this evocative Spanish music was composed when most western Europeans had little knowledge of the world outside of their own communities. A sense of the unknown over the horizon permeates history’s first song cycle — the Seven Songs of Love by the 13th-century Gallician Martim Codax. The mesmerizing, interlocking poems are sung by a woman on the shore at Vigo, waiting for her lover to return from the sea. The burgeoning curiosity and spirit of adventure of the era present themselves in a mass by the 15th-century Spaniard Juan Cornago, based on a popular song about a map of the world. These are performed along with spirited Spanish dance music of both periods. With vocalists, fiddles, winds, lutes, and psalteries.

Christmas in new spain

By the 16th and 17th centuries, maps and charts with considerable detail would show Spain’s empire in the New World, becoming known as New Spain. The encounter between Spanish, Inca, and Aztec cultures produced music unique to New Spain, with indigenous American as well as African elements. Some of the most engaging and unusual Christmas music of the time comes from the cathedrals and lay religious fraternities of Mexico and Peru. Folger Consort presents exuberant music by Latin American and Spanish composers for the Christmas season and lively rhythms of early baroque dances. With vocal ensemble, guitar, harp, violin, viol, and bassoon.

At Washington National Cathedral

Based in part on an account of a shipwreck in Bermuda, Shakespeare’s The Tempest has inspired wonderful music. Prospero’s island is “full of noises” and rich with occasion for atmospheric music and beautiful poetry for singing. The earliest recorded settings of the songs, dating from the 17th century, may have been used in early productions. After the Restoration, the play was produced in revised versions, including one that inspired Matthew Locke’s 1674 incidental music for orchestra and voices. In 2000 Folger Consort premiered a beguiling piece for soprano, baritone, and Renaissance instruments by American composer James Primosch. The entire program leads us on a musical exploration and celebration of this great play. With soprano, baritone, and TempesTa Di mare, Philadelphia Baroque orchestra.

E ighteenth-century Europe was fascinated with things Chinese. Artists like the French painter François Boucher incorporated a new chinoiserie style in their works, and many French harpsichords were fashioned in elaborate and beautiful painted chinoiserie designs. In the middle of the century, Jean-Philippe Rameau created exotic scenes in his operas, and Asian sounds and instruments began to be incorporated into French music. Both France and China had opulent and sophisticated courts that supported great musicians, creating a rich repertoire. Folger Consort explores the allure of China for the French musical imagination in the works of Rameau, Marais, and others. With soprano, violinist, harpsichordist, and traverse flute.

Folger Consort enters into an eastern tributary to the main stream of Renaissance music — the rarely heard, extraordinary musical art of what was then Europe’s largest kingdom. Although Italian and German musicians had a significant presence under the Jagiellonian kings, native Polish musicians were active, and mazurka rhythms and other features of Polish folk music are clearly present in the works of their music. Here the Folger Consort traverses the songs and sacred music of Polish composers like Mikołaj Zieleński and Wacław z Szamotuł, a true Renaissance man whose early biographer lamented, “if the gods had let him live longer, the Poles would have no need to envy the Italians their Palestrina.” With bagpipe, viols, cornetto, lute, organ, and trombone accompanying vocal ensemble The WesTern Wind.
