Seal-O-Matic’s current fleet of some 21 Cat machines is broad and includes large and small pavers and compactors, a cold planer, along with motor graders, backhoes and skid steers. “We own some machines, lease a couple and rent when we need to,” Jaben said.

This helps with cash flow during the off-season,” Jaben added.

While controlling maintenance costs is important, Jaben finds additional value in the scope of services Foley offers. “Foley runs annual, on-site safety and operator training which also figures into the cost-savings equation. Well-trained, safety-conscious employees are more productive and, of course, our most valuable assets.” Jaben concluded.

With an office a short distance from the Argosy Casino in Riverside, MO, one might think Mike Jaben of Seal-O-Matic Paving Company would be a regular. “Not me. I gamble every day running this business.”

Seal-O-Matic is a paving contractor that got its start in 1974 when Jerry Jaben and a partner purchased what was then, a single crew paving operation. Hard work and a focus on the fundamentals of watching productivity and costs has grown Seal-O-Matic into a major contractor in Kansas City and the surrounding areas in northeast Kansas.

The structure and growth of the business reads like many family-owned companies with other family members becoming active in the operation. Today, Mike Jaben, Jerry’s son, is the second generation and current president. Mike’s son, Miles, has entered the business continuing the family lineage.

The WorkSeal-O-Matic specializes in new parking

lot construction but completes contracts for street development, as well as maintenance and repair work. Jaben runs two paving crews full-time, one milling crew and one doing soil augmentation work. “In the last 10-years, we’ve seen more activity in fly ash soil amending for roadways and building pads,” Jaben said. “We’re also very active in cold milling for a number of contractors.”

by way of hard bid with a small percentage coming from negotiated contracts. “We operate in an extremely competitive bid environment with a simple win/loss outcome. You either price the job right or you don’t,” Jaben continued.

The K Series Small Wheel Loaders introduced last year offer significant fuel savings over previous models. The Tier IV Final models 924K, 930K and 938K can offer fuel savings of up to $500 monthly compared to some competitive machines.

Ranger Feeders’ experience has been considerably better. Purchased in ’13, Ranger’s

924K has 2,144 hours of total run time and a total lifetime fuel consumption of 2,709 gallons. The images below of the operator display show 1.3 gallons per hour (GPH) lifetime average fuel consumption. This cut Rangers’ fuel bill in half compared to their previous Cat® 924G.

Ranger Feeders is a custom contract feed operation just east of Dighton, Kansas, with a 12,000 head capacity. Ranger runs this loader in their feed barn with a 4 ½ yard bucket that heaps to 5 yards. It is set up for a 4-minute auto shut down, one of a number of Caterpillar fuel savings features.

Foley recently completed a Certified Power Train (CPT) rebuild on this ’06 D6R. The tractor is owned by Pfeifer Dozer & Well Service.

The machine was purchased used in 2008 with 1,600 hours and delivered to Foley for the rebuild with 9,700 hours. It is one of 12 dozers used in Pfeifer’s well site preparation service. Pfeifer’s Cat fleet also includes four backhoe loaders and two wheel loaders.

All major components on the D6R were in their original condition and the tractor, along with a majority of the other dozers in the fleet, has been under a Foley Maintenance Plan and the watchful eye of Craig Roy, Foley Product Support rep.

“I think Craig was the first to see the machine when we bought it,” said Leon Pfeifer, a second-generation operator of the family business. “I’ve been working with Craig for 24 years so I’ve got a lot of trust in his judgment and recommendations. Caterpillar’s response to Tier IV emission control standards includes a number of technologies and systems designed to meet the increasingly stringent requirements. One of those is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

What is DEF and how does it work?Diesel exhaust fluid is a precisely

mixed solution of 32.5% high purity, chemical grade urea and 67.5% de-ionized water.

Diesel engines can be run with a lean burn, air-to-fuel ratio to ensure the full combustion of soot and to prevent the exhaust of unburnt fuel. The excess of oxygen leads to the generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), EPA-recognized and regulated pollutants.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is used to reduce the amount of NOx released into the atmosphere by injecting DEF into the exhaust pipeline. The two components of DEF, ammonia and urea, chemically convert the pollutants to harmless water and nitrogen.

How much DEF will I need?On Cat products equipped with

a SCR system, DEF consumption is approximately 2-3% of fuel consumption depending on the product and application. The DEF tank has a 1:1 fill rate with the fuel tank. If fuel is added, DEF needs to be added. The DEF fill cap is an industry standard blue and easily identifiable on the product.

Are there storage requirements?DEF should be stored in a cool, dry,

well-ventilated area. The ideal storage temperature for DEF is between 15ºF and 77ºF (-9ºC and 25ºC). It should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time as the urea will decompose. Refer to ISO 22241-3 for further information regarding DEF handling, transportation and storage.

Is DEF corrosive? Yes. DEF is corrosive to many different

materials, proper dispensing equipment and practices must be utilized. Failure to use DEF specific tooling and fittings will result in corrosion and contamination of the DEF supply. As few as one incorrect fitting could contaminate the DEF supply and may

lead to emission system faults and engine shutdown.

DEF spills should be cleaned immediately, and machine or engine surfaces should be wiped clean and rinsed with water. As always, refer to the MSDS for specific safety and handling guidelines.

Are there recommendations for dispensing?

Yes. Automatic dispensing units provide safe guards for DEF dispensing. Every Cat DEF tank is equipped with a magnet in the fill port. The automatic dispensing DEF nozzle has lever protection, if the magnet is not detected, DEF will not be dispensed. This prevents the DEF tank from being overfilled and DEF from being dispensed into the fuel tank, hydraulic oil tank, windshield washer tank, etc.

Is contamination a concern? Yes. DEF cleanliness is extremely

important as contaminants can degrade the life of DEF and SCR system components. Several points to consider are:

• Clean the fill area prior to refilling • Avoid transfer containers when

possible • If transfer containers are used, keep

the container clean and dedicated for DEF

Poor handling practices will contaminate the DEF supply and potentially lead to fault codes and emission system failures.

Connecting Machines with Attachments for Maximum Productivity

First, select a machine that allows easy exit and entry of the machine and offers good visibility from the operator’s seat to the attachment. Its coupler configuration should allow an operator unobstructed access to the seat and a clear view to the attachment.

Second, determine the type of coupler the machine will need. The universal coupler interface and low profile side plates of mechanical quick couplers allow the most tools to match properly while keeping dirt and debris out. Two high-leverage handles serve to engage or disengage the tools.

Hydraulic quick couplers have a rocker switch in the cab that controls two hydraulic cylinders, allowing the operator to change tools while in the cab. Hydraulic cylinders control the vertical wedge pins that lock the tool in place.

High-Flow and Standard-Flow Hydraulics Hydraulic power not only provides power

to the wheels, but it also operates the loader to enable lifting and tilting and runs the auxiliary circuit, which drives attachments.

The criteria for “high-flow” or “standard-flow” may differ from one manufacturer to another. High-flow machines designated “XPS” (33 gallons/minute at 4,050 psi) are capable of maintaining maximum pressure regardless of attachment speed or working conditions, at low or high idle. The typical flow for a standard-flow machine is 22 gallons per minute.

Types of Attachments Attachments fall into two groups:

fabricated and hydromechanical. Buckets and forks, which do not have moving parts controlled by the operator, are “fabricated” tools. Hydromechanical attachments include multi-purpose buckets, mulchers, hammers, augers, grapples, rakes and other attachments that are powered by the machine’s auxiliary hydraulics.

Fabricated attachments are the most universal and a machine from one manufacturer can attach the buckets or forks made by another manufacturer with very little trouble, as they do not require additional hydraulics to operate.

Hydromechanical attachments have more specific requirements. Therefore, most equipment manufacturers recommend that machines use the hydromechanical attachments from the same manufacturer. Why? Hydraulic hose hook-ups and fittings

are of the same strength and brand, ensuring a proper match and tight fit to reduce leaks and loss of pressure.

Attachments to Match Equipment manufacturers may offer a tool

in a variety of configurations. Augers are a good example; direct drive or planetary drive augers are available for standard hydraulic flow machines. These configurations are designed to maximize the capabilities of the hydraulic circuit and are intended for medium-duty applications. A high-flow planetary-driven auger on a high-flow hydraulic machine would be appropriate for extreme-duty applications. The high-flow configuration is designed for maximum torque and the hydraulic hoses and seals are built to withstand the additional pressure and maintain a leak-free connection.

Multiple Machines Choosing attachments that can be

operated by multiple machines may enhance flexibility and productivity on the jobsite. Two machines with similar hydraulic flow and horsepower, such as a large skid steer loader and a small wheel loader, can usually run most of the same hydromechanical attachments. Generally, a machine with high-flow hydraulics can operate attachments designed for standard-flow machines, but the reverse pairing is not recommended. A standard-flow machine’s hydraulic system will be unable to supply the flow needed to properly operate the tool.

Fuel Polishing?More than 80 years ago, Caterpillar®

was advising customers on this topic. Here is an excerpt from the 1931 operator’s manual for the Diesel Seventy.

Diesel fuel is less refined than gasoline. As a result, it contains more organic material and can actually give rise to the growth of algae.

Most back-up electric power generators, (EPG), run on diesel fuel stored in tanks under the generator. Because EPG units spend a large amount of time not running, the fuel can go bad. Bad fuel means no backup power.

A comprehensive EPG maintenance program includes a number of critical services, one of which is fuel polishing. This process thoroughly filters the fuel through a succession

of microscopic filter screens or media to remove these contaminants and assure customers that back-up power will be there when they need it.

Standby Power Should Be Ready PowerNature does not always offer fair warning as

to when it will disrupt primary power supplies. And even when there is warning, last minute testing of backup equipment is not sufficient preparation. If testing reveals the need for a part, it may be too late for timely repairs.

Often times we find out that a tornado is just one of the many reasons why standby power may be needed. And it is not just Mother Nature that is responsible – it could simply be a failure at a substation. Considering the impact the loss of primary power can have on your operation, it is clear you should conduct regular testing of standby power.

The preferred testing procedure for a standby power system is to put the system under load by removing the normal source of power. You can do this by turning off the service entrance circuit breaker and operating for a short time on the standby generator.

This checks the operation of the Power Switchgear, Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), Uninterruptible Power Supply (if installed), as well as the generator set.

Are there other EMSolutions services?

Yes, Foley offers four distinct programs broken into levels. Level 1 is called

ACCESS and provides basic data and operating alerts. INFORM is Level 2 and includes fluid sampling, fleet health and performance reports. Level 3, ADVISE, builds on Level 2 by adding additional maintenance assistance and performance reporting, analysis and recommendations. What is EMSolutions?

The simple explanation is a program that connects

the machine and its operating data to Foley and the customer. “Operating data” includes anything from productivity of the machine to hydraulic fluid pressure or fault codes. EMSolutions provides products, services and tools to assist equipment owners in optimizing equipment performance, utilization and cost control, regardless of their individual repair and maintenance strategies.

Explain the value of this information.

There are two clear benefits: improve productivity and reduce operating

expense. By monitoring machine alerts, oil and coolant samples and performing regular machine inspections, we can help to optimize the machine’s use. On the cost side, we can catch small problems before they become larger, costly repairs.

How does the machine

communicate and who is monitoring it?

The equipment communicates

via satellite or cellular depending upon the device. By device, I'm referring to

the Product Link communication hardware. VisionLink is the software that presents the data to customers and to Foley to help determine performance and machine health. The machine health can be captured with the electronic information from the equipment along with, machine inspections and oil sample history.

Foley’s Equipment Solutions Group monitors the machine data of connected machines. Depending on the level of EMSolutions service the customer has, this information can then be interpreted and forwarded to the customer with a recommendation from Foley’s Condition Monitoring Consultants.

This is a unique solution for a unique project in which there are significant demands on cost containment and finished

surface tolerance. A bump at 70 mph in your car may not be a big deal. It’s an entirely different matter when an aircraft lands at 150 knots.

LOCATION: Forbes Field – Topeka, KS

CONTRACTOR: Bettis Asphalt – Topeka, KS

PROJECT SCOPE: Mill and resurface runway shared by commercial and military aircraft, approximately 68,000 feet total run for two lifts, not including the mill runs.

ISSUES: Stringent rideability tolerances on surface smoothness Eliminate traditional low spot leveling Tight material budget

FOLEY SOLUTION: 2 Trimble SPS 930 Robotic Total Stations placed 1,000 feet apart to guide the mill and paver.

The SPS 930s provide precise location and elevation of mill and paver, guided to a site design created through Trimble Business Center.

Full 3D guidance on first pass. Subsequent passes made with 3-D controlling one side and 2-D sonic joint matching previous pass.

OUTCOME: The project is ongoing. QC evaluation of surface is underway.
