The new courthouse of Ghent is situated in the Rabot district in the Opgeeïsten Avenue. This complex, also called Great Courthouse Ghent, was opened for the first time in 2007 to end the lack of space and fragmentation of the legal services. Most of the outside of the building is covered with glass and is therefore popularly called the glass house. The main building consists of three to-wers each of them five stories high. There are two ponds in the courtyard witch is located at the minus one level.
Before the courthouse was built there was a gas compa-ny located on those grounds. Afterwards the train sta-tion Ghent-Rabot was built, but in the seventies it got shut down and removed. In the South- West you can still see the three towers that were built from 1972 un-till 1974. Together they contain 573 appartments. They intend to destroy those buildings and replace them with 400 social housings. On the other side of the park a youth house was constructed simultaneously with the new Courthhouse.
