Even the pros once lacked confidence and wore hats that were too big. Forgot to run after hitting the ball off the tee,
for example. Upstanding citizen, solid person: these are things kids become with a bit of help along the way. The Twins and
the Twins Community Fund support the growth of our young people through the values learned from baseball and softball,
so that they might become champions at whatever they pursue.
Established as a nonprofit organization in 1991, the mission of the Twins Community Fund is to enrich local and regional
communities by providing resources for the healthy development of children and families through an association with
baseball, softball and the Minnesota Twins.

Since moving to the Twin Cities in 1961, the Minnesota Twins Baseball Club has worked hard to
build a tradition of winning baseball, affordable family entertainment and community service.
The past five-plus decades have produced vivid memories of championship seasons, Hall of Fame
players and special times at the ballpark for multiple generations across the Upper Midwest.
The bond between team and community has never been stronger as Target Field redefines the
game day experience and expands the team’s overall impact on Twins Territory.
While the Twins fully understand the importance of wins and losses, the franchise remains equally
committed to being an active member of our community. To that end, despite a challenging year
on the field in 2012, the Twins community presence was never stronger. With that spirit in mind,
we proudly share the team’s 2013 Community Report with hopes that it provides insight into
the club’s ongoing dedication to making Twins Territory a better place to live. THANK YOU
for your support. We look forward to seeing you at the ballpark and in our community.
Win Twins!!!

The Minnesota Twins are committed to being responsible and supportive members of the communities
in which we live and do business. One of the ways the club demonstrates its commitment to the
community is through volunteer work performed by our employees.
Twins full-time employees dedicated more than 2,300 hours to volunteerism in 2012. Our staff spent
those hours in a myriad of ways working with hundreds of different organizations – these pages
show just a few examples of how our employees got involved in Twins Territory over the past year.

Each December, Twins front office employees dedicate
a week to giving back. Activities in 2012 included
serving dinner to residents at People Serving People,
hosting a holiday party at CommonBond communities,
visiting with patients at Children’s Hospital and
refurbishing a transitional veterans’ home with
Rebuilding Together.
50 Twins and Toro employees volunteered
to spend a day renovating two youth fields at
Bryant Square Park in Minneapolis. This effort
was led by the Twins grounds crew and the
Toro Sports Turf managers.

Giving back to the community has been at the foundation of the Twins organization since the
team’s arrival in Minnesota in 1961. Players and alumni take that commitment to heart, supporting
a wide variety of causes across Twins Territory. Wearing a Twins uniform means more than being
a ballplayer — it also means joining a tradition of giving that dates back more than 50 years.
The Minnesota Twins created Twins Hope Week in
2011. Twins Hope Week is an effort by the entire Twins
organization to reach out to Twins Territory and make
a difference in people's lives. During each day of Hope
Week, different Twins players lead groups of teammates,
former Twins, front-office staff and fans in participating
in various volunteer activities.

Twin. Since 1993, the Twins Community Fund, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and
the St. Paul Department of Parks and Recreation have partnered to provide Twin Cities youth the
opportunity to play baseball and softball.
Today, every player on a Minneapolis and St. Paul park team is a member of RBI, the national competitive

The Carl R. Pohlad Award recognizes outstanding community involvement and on-field performance of one current Twins player or coach each season.
2012 Winner: Denard Span
Denard Span covered a lot of ground in the Twins’ outfield and is one of the best leadoff hitters in the game. He works to be as versatile and helpful in the community as he is on the field.
While with the Twins, Denard supported and served as spokesman for the Twins’ Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities program, a Major League Baseball youth baseball and softball program that the Twins Community Fund administers at Minneapolis and St. Paul parks.
Denard helped to raise funds for the RBI program by hosting a bowling tournament that benefited Friends of St. Paul Baseball and the Twins Community Fund.
Denard also supported the Jeremiah Program, a local charity that benefits single mothers. The proud son of a single mother, Denard visited with youth of single mothers associated with the charity.
Span established a community ticket program called Span’s Fans that provides Twins game tickets to economically disadvantaged youth from the Upper Midwest. Since 2011, more than 1,000 youth and their families have attended a Twins game for free because of Denard’s generous contributions.
In addition to the charitable work mentioned above, Span spent countless hours signing autographs at TwinsFest, helping to raise more than $280,000 annually for the Twins Community Fund, which benefits youth baseball and softball. He also took time to participate in youth baseball clinics, the Twins’ Winter Caravan and other nonprofit fundraisers throughout the season.

This award recognizes a leader in supporting Minnesota youth baseball and/or softball by contributing to the advocacy and promotion of the game and its participants. The award is named after long time Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan in honor of his passion and dedication to the promotion of baseball and softball.
2012 Winner: Jim Berbee
Jim Berbee grew up and worked on a dairy farm in Deer River, MN. Although the farm life kept his schedule busy, he sometimes snuck away to play fast-pitch softball and baseball.
Now, at age 70, Berbee has spent many years in service through youth sports. In 1973, he began by serving on the boards of directors of various charities while coaching his children’s baseball teams. While coaching his children’s teams, he saw the need for more fundamental instruction. His passion was to teach younger generations the skills that would help on the field and in life, so he created clinics to teach the fundamentals.
In 1983, Berbee began coaching the Minnetonka High School fast pitch summer team. At that time, there was only one level of play for youth fast pitch, 18 and under. He helped start all the summer softball programs in the metro area and later coached the younger, 15 and under, team.
Currently, Berbee coaches the Minnesota Mudhens, a college summer team, and has coached four Minnesota teams to National Championships and seven Western Canadian Championships. This year, Berbee will be in his 40th year as a coach and mentor. He is a nationally noted clinician and works with athletes of all ages from the Upper Midwest and Canada.
Berbee has also founded the charity, the Tonka Recreation Association, to help young athletes find college scholarships. The Tonka Recreation Association also provides job opportunities for college athletes in the summer and at winter clinics. Currently, 11 of Berbee’s former athletes are college head coaches and more than 50 are high school and college assistant coaches.
Berbee and his wife Sharon have been married over 45 years and have three adult children, Heidi, Matthew and Christopher.

In 2010, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded Target Field LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Silver Certification for New Construction, making it the second Major League ballpark in the United States to achieve that
status. Less than two years after earning LEED Silver Certification for New Construction, the Minnesota Twins became the
first professional sports franchise to also attain LEED Silver Certification for Operation and Maintenance of their facility.

Recycling and Converting Waste to Energy Through aggressive recycling and waste-to-energy programs, the Twins kept more than 2,559 tons of waste
out of local landfills in 2011 and 2012.
• 1,333 tons of trash have been sent to the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center
• 956 tons of waste have been recycled from Target Field
• 260 tons of organic materials have been composted and diverted from landfills
In 2013, the Twins will seek help from fans in increasing the amount of recycled organic materials,
further reducing the amount of waste produced at Target Field.
Through a custom-designed Rain Water Recycle System provided by
Minneapolis-based Pentair, the Minnesota Twins have captured, purified and
reused more than 1,846,322 gallons of rainwater, drastically reducing the use of
municipal water at Target Field in 2011 and 2012. The majority of the recycled
rainwater was used to wash down the seating bowl attached to the main concourse.
If the infield at Target Field was a six-foot deep swimming pool, we could fill it
four times with the water saved just in 2012.

The Minnesota Twins and concession partner Delaware North
Companies Sportservice donated more than six tons of food to local
charities during the 2012 season. Through a partnership with Rock
and Wrap It Up! Inc., representatives from Joseph's Storehouse in
Brooklyn Park boxed up all prepared but untouched meals at Target Field,
donating the unused food to local charities. In 2011, the Twins donated
more than 7,500 pounds of food through this program. Throughout the
two-year partnership, the Twins have donated:
• more than 55,000 hot dogs and brats
• more than 8,000 hamburgers
• more than 3,500 chicken breasts
To date, not only have these efforts helped feed hungry people at local
charities, they have also kept TEN TONS of waste out of local landfills.
The Twins will continue this program in 2013.

In 2011, the Twins reduced their use of electricity by 12.1
percent, despite adding a new video board in right field
and additional radiant heating units in the concourses.
Target Field is 23 percent more energy efficient than other
buildings in its ENERGY STAR category. In 2013, the Twins
will continue to seek ways to responsibly use energy while
reducing overall consumption.

The Minnesota Twins earned several
LEED points—including an exemplary
performance and innovation point—
for its comprehensive Green Cleaning
program. In 2011, the Twins reduced
the usage of chemical cleaning
compounds by 66 percent over 2010,
using a total of 73 percent of cleaning
compounds that met the USGBC's
LEED standards. By reducing the
amount of chemicals needed to clean
Target Field, the Twins' cleaning
efforts had a diminished negative
impact on the environment and
the health of building occupants.

Engaging with Twins Baseball:
Students from area schools
welcomed the players on the field
to start the 2013 season. For most
of them it was their first trip to
Target Field.
The Twins Emerging Markets department works with community
leaders, organizations and minority-owned businesses to build
relationships and identify business opportunities through the
game of baseball. The focus is on inclusion and celebrating
diversity—the one thing we all have in common.
Celebrate Diversity: The Twins provide
opportunities for communities to showcase
their culture. At TwinsFest, Native American
performers told stories about their ancestors
through dance.
Supporting Youth: The Twins’ Wives Organization works with
the emerging markets department to provide backpacks filled
with supplies to help students, such as those at Cesar Chavez
School in Minneapolis.
