“To Know Jesus And To Make Him Known”

Earlier this year, the Aldersgate Church Council and others participated in a survey to gauge the readiness of the people of Aldersgate for mission. From that survey, a wide array of insights were discovered. As Wyvonne Johnson, Church Council Chairperson, studied the list of insights, she recognized a pattern. Three distinct practices arose out of the list of suggestions.

Reaching New People Fresh Thinking Working as Teams

At every turn and with every decision, these three practices will be brought into the discussion. How will this decision enable us to better reach new people? Have we exercised fresh thinking? What does team look like to lead this?

While the Church Council recognizes the important role they have in accom-plishing our mission, there is no doubt that our mission is shared. All of us are to be deepening our relationships with Jesus and making Him known to others. Therefore, I want to ask you and your Sunday School class, small group, mission team, etc. to also have these three priorities before you reg-ularly. As we share in that focus, perhaps, we’ll find better answers togeth-er.

How are you reaching new people? How have you exercised fresh thinking to accomplish God’s mission? For our next project, who do I need to invite onto the team?

Those are good questions to ask. Perhaps, they will guide our way to even greater faithfulness!

Peace,

Focusing on Moving Our Mission!

Welcome New Members!

A warm welcome to the newest members of our Aldersgate family, Sara

Reeder, Mildred Newman, and Frances Johnson. They come to us by trans-

fer from another local United Methodist Church.

Turkey has been in the news often in the past few months due to the refugee crisis, the Istanbul terror attack, and most recent-ly the failed military coup. Turkey is not a place most of us would voluntarily live, but our new missionary partners have chosen to serve there because only 5000 of the 75 million peo-ple living in Turkey profess faith in Christ. Their focus is pri-marily on the Kurds of southeastern Turkey, but they also min-ister to the Turks and more than 200,000 Syrian refugees in their city.

They have a heart to see the Gospel spread throughout Turkey resulting in leaders being raised up and equipped to reach their own people. They are working to plant house churches in an area where 90% have never heard the Gospel. On August 14 you will have an opportunity to get to know this missionary couple as they share in the chapel during the Sunday School hour. Everyone is invited.

Kick-Off Sunday—August 14

We will have one combined 10:30 Wor-ship Service in our Christian Activity Cen-ter on Sunday, August 14. Our service will feature special music that will include Bluegrass, Contemporary, and Jazz music by our Worship Team, Choir and Don Boatright and an inspiring message from Dr. Brian Miller. We will have Food

Trucks in our parking lot for lunch and games for families of all ages after our service. We will also have our Chapel service of Holy Communion at 8:15 that morning, where Rev. Michael Cobb will deliver a thought-provoking message.

Aldersgate Polos For Sale July 31, August 7 and August 14—Before the Sunday School hour and after the worship hour, you can order an Aldersgate polo shirt for three Sundays. The front desk will also have an envelope for orders. The staff and choir already have shirts, which they will be modeling during Camp Meeting Month. Order your $25 shirt by Aug. 15 for delivery after Labor Day. (Add $2 for 2X, $3 for 3X and $4 for 4X) The red, royal, blue-berry and gold shirts with the Aldersgate logo embroidered in white will help identify us as Aldersgate members and help us to make Jesus known. Order forms will be included in the July 31 bulletin. Turn your order into the office or those collecting orders on those three Sunday mornings.

The Cost of Poverty Experience Tuesday, August 2, 6:00—8:15 p.m.

Aldersgate Christian Activity Center

Communities of Transformation invites you to join them at “The Cost of Poverty Experience”. This is an event that offers participants a glimpse into the lives of low-income individuals and families living in our community. It is a look into the ob-stacles that are faced, the decisions that are made, and the con-sequences that impact these families every day. The CareSource Foundation has partnered with Think Tank to de-velop COPE, which was co-designed with low-income individ-uals who have shared their story so that participants could gain greater understanding. Many organizations and communities across the nation use COPE to work more effectively with low-income families to understand and address the issues of poverty more comprehensively. Register at www.eventbrite.com/e/cope-faith-edition-participant-tickets-26420962811. If you have questions, contact Janet Wooten at 334-540-2673.

Door Greeters Needed! Our Worship Committee is in need of additional Sunday morn-ing Welcome Team “Door Greeters.” Please contact either Rev. Steve Badskey or Doug Loughridge if you are interested in serving in this important ministry. Training is short, and your time as a greeter will be as little as one or two 20 minute periods every other month. We’ll have Greeter Training at 11:35 on Sunday, July 31 in Room 26. We encourage your support of our church’s hospitality efforts. GREETERS make a difference EVERY Sunday!

Name Tag Month at Aldersgate We’re asking that all members wear their name tags during the month of August. Our greeters will have temporary name tags available at the entrances to our church in case you forget or have lost your name tag. New permanent name tags can be created for you by calling Linda in the church office at 272-6152. We hope that everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to get to know each other better.

Covenant Bible Study Mamie Sellers is having a luncheon Wednesday, August 3 at 11:30 a.m. in her home at 3343 Drexel Road for present and pro-spective members of the Covenant Bible Study. The Covenant Bible Study group does not meet during the summer but begins meeting again Wednesday, September 7. This is the Bible Study group that was started by Edith Snyder many years ago. Edith’s desire is for this study group to continue meeting and studying God’s Word together. If you would like to have lunch with Ma-mie on August 3, please RSVP to Barbara Boland by Friday, July 29 at 272-0330 or [email protected].

Estate Planning Session There will be an “Estate Planning” discussion on Sunday, August 21 during the Sunday school hour in the church Chapel. This session is sponsored by the Permanent Endowment Fund (PEF) Committee; it will be conducted by committee members who are professionals in the areas of wealth management, probate law, and estate taxes. Members and friends of Aldersgate are encour-aged to attend this informational gathering. We are asking at-tendees to sign-up for this discussion to ensure an adequate num-ber of hand-outs for our participants. This can be done by: sign-ing up in your Sunday school class, calling the church office, going to the Aldersgate website, or contacting a member of the PEF Committee. For additional information, phone Doug Loughridge at 272-8277.

Door Greeter Meeting: There will be a brief meeting of our active door greeters on July 31. This session will be held after our 10:30 church services in Room 26 of our church. It should last no more than 15 to 20 minutes, and all greeters who didn’t attend the session on July 17 should plan to attend this meeting. If you have questions, please contact either Rev. Free Chocolate! Buy 2 chocolate minis (.25 each) and get one FREE at the Aldersgate Fair Trade Store. It's delicious and your purchase supports hard working cacao farmers in co-ops such as the Fortaleza del Valle in Ecuador. This co-operative has over 630 farmers as members. The average size of each farm is 2.5 - 12.5 acres, and the farms are diversi-fied to include fruit and timber trees. Instead of being exploited by middlemen, the co-op enjoys the benefits of Fair Trade, which allows them to earn a respectable living so they can invest in their business and provide better lives for their families. Learn more about Fair Trade at www.equalexchange.coop.

Calling all Potential Saints!

There will be a Senior Saints Luncheon at Mamie Sellers’ Home, 3343 Drexel Road, on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Potential Saints are welcome! Call Mamie at 279-9313 to make a reservation.

Men’s Tuesday Bible Study & Breakfast The Men’s Tuesday Bible Study and Breakfast will resume on Tuesday, August 9, at 6:30 a.m. in room 22. The Rev. Derek Frost will be our teacher/leader for August. It is always a pleasure to have Derek come and bring God’s Word to us. Breakfast starts at 6:30, with Derek starting close to 7. We wrap up at 7:30, just in time for those that work to make it in by 8:00.

Thank you to all of our youth and adult volunteers who helped to make Won-derful Wednesday a success! We have had a fabulous summer taking our "road trip" and hanging out at Grace's Garage. A big thank you to our Children's Ministry Intern Eliza Richardson for her dedication to this program. Grace's Garage will return on Sundays in the fall beginning August 21 as we kickoff a new season of 3D Kids Worship during our 10:30 worship hour.

August 5th-6th will be our annual lock in!! It will begin at 7:00 pm Fr iday night and pick up will be at 7:00 am Saturday morning. Bring $20 for our activities. Make sure you eat dinner before you come as we will just be having snacks. As most of you know we will not have a designated time or place for sleeping so we ask that you do not bring sleeping bags and overnight items. We will do our best to stay up all night. We will be leaving the church for our Friday evening activities and as it draws closer, I will let you know what those things are. We will be staying in Montgomery though.

Aldersgate Food Pantry

AUGUST & SEPTEMBER

NON-FOOD ITEMS

Hygiene Products:

Soap, Toothbrush/Paste, Deodorant

Paper Products: Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Tissue

Cleaning Products: Laundry Detergent (small),

Household Cleaners

Believe it or not – SNAP (Food Stamps) does not help pay for toilet paper. Most of us consider this a necessity! But toilet paper is not a food item!! SNAP only pays for food or seeds to grow food. For August and September, the Food Pantry is asking you to donate the above NON food items. This will help our clients stretch their incomes a little further for the food needed for their table. Toiletries and cleaning products can always be pur-chased at the Dollar Tree at great savings! Paper products can be purchased in bulk at many stores. Therefore, you can make your money go further at the same time as helping our clients!!

River Region Readers Join the book club at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 14, in room 119 as we discuss Love Does by Bob Goff. All are welcome! Come even if you haven’t finished the book. We will be discussing Unchartered Waters by Sara DuBose at 6:00 p.m., Sep-tember 11.

Acolyte Recognition We will have a special recognition for all of our Acolytes during our upcoming August

28, 10:30 worship service in the Sanctuary. Immediately after our service we will have an Acolyte training session at 11:40 in the Sanctuary for all of our children and youth. All of our Acolyte and Carol Choir children are invited to join us for our Laser Tag Kick-Off party 10:30—1:30 the day before our recognition on Saturday, August 27.

H E L P! We need a few good talkers. If you like to chat with friends and have a few hours to devote to Aldersgate per week or as a substi-tute, we have a low-stress job for you with pleasant surroundings! We need volunteers to staff the front desk and forward calls or visitors to the appropriate people. The times are flexible, usually 4 hours per shift. We’re asking for 4 hours, but will certainly take more if you have the time available. Training will be provided. If you are willing to provide this needed service, please contact Bill Haigler at 356-4236.
