FOCUS ON THE LEARNERS ASSIGNMENT 2
1. Learners background
The learner I observed s called Antonio Succi! he s an Italan IT techncan
"ho retred a cou#le o$ years ago. %e co&es $ro& 'lan and he graduated n
In$or&atcs at the Politecnico di Milano "here he (rst learnt Englsh. )urng hs
l$e he has "orked $or several nternatonal coanes &ostly settled n the *+
and n the *,A. %e s no" collaboratng "th a voluntary assocaton "hch hel#
uneloyed #eo#le to (nd a ne" "orkng #lace. Ths assocaton &ay ask h&
to go back to England and $or ths reason he s "llng to enhance hs Englsh
attendng ths course. %e loves dyna&c classes "hch deal "th real l$e to#cs
and #roble&s.
2. Learners strengths
The long #erods o$ hs l$e s#ent n Englsh s#eakng countres has gven h&
-uency n s#eakng and a ute $or&al a##roach to "rtng! ths #robably
because at "ork he "as reured to "rte constant re#orts o$ hs "eekly
actvtes. Even $ the structure o$ hs lngustc #roducton s not al"ays correct
on a gra&&atcal level he can clearly be understood also "hen he s
e/#ressng dcult conce#ts.
. Error analyss grd
,ee the grd n attached to ths docu&ent.
. ,tate&ent o$ choce o$ lesson to#c and ratonale.
I have chosen to dedcate &y lesson to an n3de#th revson o$ de(nte artcles
because the student tends to overuse the de(nte artcle even "hen t s not
needed. Ths at an u##er nter&edate level! &ay lead to a crucal lack o$
accuracy. In ths case a teacher &ust avod the #ossblty o$ $ossl4aton o$
ths error.
5. Choce and ust(caton $or teachng &aterals.
a6 A&ong the varous controlled practicetasks that course books devote to the
use o$ de(nte and nde(nte artcles I $ound an nterestng (ll the ga# actvty
concernng (ndng a ob and the age o$ retre&ent. I thnk ths task can be very
&otvatng $or Antono $or several reasons a&ong "hch the $act that he
collaborates n an assocaton "hch has e/actly the a& o$ hel#ng uneloyed
n lookng $or a ne" ob. Another ortant $actor "hch &akes &e thnk that
the te/t can st&ulate the nterest o$ &y student s that he s currently
e/#erencng the (rst years a$ter the retre&ent. Concernng the level! the
e/ercse s #art o$ the collecton o$ e/ercses $or the 7CE e/a& #re#araton

course book I there$ore thnk the level can be sutable $or Antono1.
b6 Thnkng o$ a sutable free practice activityI could ask h& to talk about his
working life among dierent international companies around the globe and let
him describe the structures, the branches and the dierent oces around the
world.
Ths task gves Antono #ractce o$ $ree language #roducton through a
conversaton on a "ell3kno"n to#c. The vocabulary he s e/#ected to use s
soðng he already kno"s and &asters "ell.
7or ths reason! he can be concentrated on the accuracy o$ hs #roducton
"hch "ll de(ntely nclude a $reuent use o$ artcles! &anly because he "ll
be dscussng about s#ec(c oces and s#ec(c grou# o$ #eo#le.
An alternatve to a s#eakng actvty can be to write a tet on the same topic
and imagine to write an article for an !nglish newspaper describing thestructure, the branches and the dierent oces around the world with the aim
to promote the solidity and the reliability of the company he worked in for
many year before retiring.
Ths second o#ton can also hel# hs #ersonal &ontorng! gvng h& the
#ossblty to correct hs o"n &stakes "hle re3readng the te/t.
