Mitigating New Risks: Top 10 for CybersecuritySysLogic

1. Be extra cautious of new COVID-19 phishing campaigns, cyber attacks and schemes. Remind employees about general best practices and continue to test. See https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/coronavirus-scams-what-ftc-doing

2. Avoid use of work devices for personal use. Don't allow family members to use your work devices.

3. Avoid use of personal USB flash drives and external hard drives with work devices.

4. Check that your computer is configured to automatically apply security updates, and that the latest updates have been applied. • Windows: ensure that Windows Update is enabled and that your system is up to date.• macOS: see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201541

5. Ensure antivirus/antimalware protection is installed, enabled, and up to date. • Windows: open Windows Security and make sure all checks are green.

6. When possible, use cloud services for securely storing and sharing documents, data and files. Productivity solutions like Microsoft Office 365 and Google G Suite make it fairly easy to do this without needing to email files co-workers or connect to a corporate VPN to access network file shares. Understand what your organization’s backup solution is for local files on your computer.

7. When connecting to your home network WiFi using Windows, prefer the network profile choice of Public instead of Private. This prevents your PC from being discoverable to other devices on the network and being used for printer and file sharing. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4043043/windows-10-make-network-public-private

8. Follow the FTC consumer guidance for Securing Your Wireless Network to further protect your home network.

9. A password management solution for your team or organization can make it easier to securely share sensitive credentials and ensure you use better quality passwords. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_password_managers.

10.One of the best protections against compromised accounts is the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA). If your organization has provided this as an option we strongly recommend taking advantage of it.
