Al-Co Products has been manufacturingMarbelustra products in Latty since

1968 and specializes in customprojects. Marbelustra, a cast polymer orcultured marble product, gives you the lookof marble and granite at a fraction of thecost. Al-Co Products has expanded to offerMosaic Marble cultured marble patterns, anew line called Tyvarian cultured marbleproducts and for the kitchen is the Travinaengineered stone. Even after years of use, these products can look like new again withonly a little bufng, adding to their value.

How has the company changedover the years?

We started with several lines of bathroomcountertops and have since moved intoevery area of the home. We decided early onthat our focus would be on unique, custom, and quality products. We produce a largeselection of designs in sink bowls, showerbases/surrounds, replace surrounds, kitchen projects, and windowsills. In

2001, we invested in an auto caster, which

is a computerized system that can be programmed with almost endless color andveining recipes. This helped to improveour quality and consistency, lower resinusage and save time allowing us to be morecompetitive. We do offer an economy line

with standard sizes for clients, but customis our forte. We now supply cabinet shopsand contractors across Ohio, Indiana andMichigan. We built a second building in1991 as our business expanded, then a third

building in 2004 to make more room for theauto caster and other lines of production. We have a showroom which showcases ourfull line of products.

How has the company handledtough times?

During the recession in 2008, we wereforced to lay off some employees, but wedid everything we could to adjust hours andcut other expenses before nally makingthe decision to lay people off. People justweren’t building houses or remodeling, so

production slowed way down. We trulyvalue our employees; they are like familyto us. We live by the golden rule; to treatothers the way we want to be treated.Once business started picking back up in

2012, we started hiring andhave seen a steady streamof business over the lastfew years. We feel a major

part of our success has been because of how we treat

people (employees andcustomers alike); we don’tmicro-manage, we hire good

people who work together tosolve problems quickly and

permanently and who putcustomers rst. That’s howwe’ve not just survived toughtimes, but have thrived for 47years.

    What are your plans

    for the future?

We are always working on researchand development so we can add newlines, change and diversify to staycompetitive. Our employees are a hugeasset in this area. Most of our employeeshave many years of experience with us andwe’re always open to try ideas they have toimprove production or test out new productideas. We also plan to expand our sales

force to continue to grow our dealer base

as well as educate dealers about productsand provide excellent customer service. Tohelp our sales force and dealers marketour products, we are working to improvecommunication through social media, likeFacebook and YouTube, our website, tradeshows and more.

      Alex Products’ Paulding location em-

ployees approximately 170 employees andmanufactures car seat frames for many cars, like the Camry, Avalon, Malibu as well assome trucks and SUVs. They do mostlyrear seat frames, but they also create partsfor arm rests, consoles, and other parts asthey win contracts with other manufacturingbusinesses. The Paulding plant manufac-tures about 7,000 seat frames a day that areshipped to customers around the US, Cana-da, and Mexico to nish building the seatsbefore being installed in vehicles.

How has your business grown overthe years?

Alex Products started in RidgevilleCorners, Ohio, in 1987. In 2000, A-StampIndustries was founded. A-Stamp is com-monly referred to as the Bryan facility, and houses most of the stamping pressesfor manufacturing. In 2002, we expandedto the Paulding location and Autocoat was

founded in Bryan, Ohio and is housed withA-Stamp in the Bryan facility. Today, thecompany has over 700 employees across itsthree locations and is looking to hire 250to 300 more employees over the next threeyears due to winning new contracts.

What do you attribute the compa-ny’s success to?

Even though the company is experiencingsuccess today, that hasn’t always been thecase. Being a supplier of automotive parts,

the company was hit hard by the recessionfrom 2008 into 2011. We dropped to below200 employees company-wide and thePaulding location was just barely surviving. We knew we needed to make some chang-es to start winning back contracts, so in

2012 we invested in exible manufacturingequipment which helped us lower our inputsand become more competitive. These newrobotic machines can be programmed tocreate endless different parts and pieces, which has helped the company save timeand money. We began winning contractsand have continued to invest in exiblemanufacturing equipment as we’ve grown.A large part of our success is attributed toemployee longevity and valuable experi-ence as we’ve shifted our manufacturing

processes. We’ve sought employee inputand recommendations to problem solve andimprove processes. We also provide a clean, quiet work environment for employees andwe try to maintain a family-like environ-ment, which we know is important forcomfort and therefore longevity.

Not only have our employees and man-agement worked together and providedinvaluable input to better our processes,

but we also take great pride in our prod-ucts and quality assurance. Alex Productshas received 19 straight supplier awardsfrom Johnson Controls, our main customer. There are strict requirements that have to

be met to receive such an award and theycontinue to demand more. To receive theaward, Alex Products has to have less than20 out of 1 million parts fail. We haveimproved manufacturing so much that wehave had less than 5 out of 1 millions partsfail, which is an enormous feat and one we

are very proud of. We’ve set the bar highand take pride in continuing to achieve the

    highest standards.

What is your vision for futuresuccess?

One of Alex Products biggest challengesfor the future is work force development. There’s a dire need for industrial electri-cians and people with technical problemsolving abilities. We have set up training

programs and offer education opportunitiesso that our employees can advance withinthe company. Our success will depend onour ability to acquire the right kind of talentand help them grow while on the job. Wewant our employees to know that they arevalued and we want to see them succeed,

because our success as a whole depends on

    the success of each individual.

New American Reel Company openedfor business in 2007, when co-owner DaveParisot purchased the business after seeingan ad in an Indiana newspaper. MarkGreenwood, co-owner, and Parisot movedthe company to its current location in 2008.They’re in business to provide wire reelrepair services for reels, bobbins and spoolsused in the manufacturing or shipping ofwire products. Over the years their capa-

bilities have expanded, and now includewelding, machining, and the design and fab-rication of new wire reels or drums, alongwith a range of other products.

    What products do you offer?

Outside of the steel and wooden reel busi-ness, we’re a job shop; made to order prod-ucts. We have a broad range of capabilitiesin metal, wood and plastic fabricating aswell as industrial painting. We’ve done signprojects, restaurant furniture, gates, fences,

and specialized attachments for farm andindustrial machinery. Some of our morevisible work includes the Herb MonroePark sign, Puckerbrush Pizza wrought ironfencing, sign and patio furniture, The AgoraCoffee House sign and Sarah Mowery DDSsign. Our signs are designed and fabricatedin house and most are built with at least a 75year life span.

As for the industrial painting services, wework with other manufacturing shops thatjust don’t want to mess with the strict EPA

and OSHA regulations, so they ship the

products to us and we provide them with professional painting and less headache.

We’re also proud of our plastic manufac-turing. For instance, we had a client, in thefood manufacturing industry, that came tous with a problem. They needed specic

parts created for specialized machines, sowe worked with them on the design andnow supply them with parts that are shippedthroughout the US to various bacon manu-facturing producers.

What is your vision for the future?

We’re always looking for that milliondollar contract, but we also welcome oppor-tunities to enhance local businesses. We’reinterested in working with area contractorson special projects like the custom awningwe did for Financial Partners Federal CreditUnion in Woodburn, Indiana. We currentlywork with Chris Banks, owner of CreativeLandscapes in Antwerp and hope to growcontractor relationships.

What’s your favorite aspect of thecompany?

There are a couple. One is giving back tothe community. We take the Boy Scout ap-

proach, so community service and involve-ment are just part of our program. Anotheris the diversity in our work. Our employeeslove to problem solve and love the challeng-es that are brought to us week after week.We are so thankful for our team. Their posi-tive attitudes and dedication are one of thereasons we are successful and were able tohandle the lumps we took during the recession.

ing the public with all your nancial needssince 1898. They have full service ofces inAntwerp and Payne and a Loan ProductionOfce in Harlan.

What do customers love mostabout your business?

People know us and we know them. Cus-tomers love the friendly, caring environ-ment we provide. Many of our employeeshave been here for decades and that hashelped with customer relationships. Werecently had two that retired after 30 yearsof service and another is about to retireafter being here for 44 years. Many of ourcustomers have been with us for a long timeas well. Word-of-mouth has been our big-

gest source of new business. We truly careabout our customers. If we don’t care aboutthem, who will? A city bank isn’t going towork for our customers like we do.

How has the vision of your busi-ness changed over the years?  It hasn’t changed much. We aren’t

interested in growing really big. We wantcustomers to speak to a person when theycall our ofce; we think that’s really im-

portant. Our focus has always been to serveour community the best we can. We have

plans to expand the services we provide inHarlan. Right now, that location is a loan production ofce and we want to build an-other ofce to provide full service bankingthere.

What’s your favorite aspect ofyour business?

Longevity speaks volumes about Stahl,Stoller, Meyer Insurance Center. It’s theirexperience, integrity, professionalism andfriendliness that has helped the companythrive since 1936. Originally founded by

Charles Stahl in Payne, Ohio, the companystill holds fast to its core values and stan-dards of excellence. In 1938, the growingcompany moved to Paulding and opened aranch in Van Wert, Ohio, in 2005.

What does the name of the busi-ness represent?

Well, other than the obvious names thatrepresent owners throughout the compa-

ny’s history, the one thing that we think isimportant to point out is the word center.Center is included in the name so we canconvey that we assist clients with almostall types of insurance, such as commercial, farm, home, auto, umbrella, health, disabil-ity and life. It also conveys that we are anindependent agency representing severalinsurance companies who focus on pro-

viding insurance policies through locallyowned agencies.

What do customers love mostabout your business?

We have heard time and time again thatour client service is outstanding and wereally pride ourselves on exceeding clientexpectations. Client service is the numberone priority and it may sound cliché, butit’s still the truth. It is part of why clientsentrust their coverage needs to our agencyfor decades through multiple family gener-ations. We help educate clients on how thevarious coverages benet them specically,so they can choose what they need and omitwhat they don’t need. We also get to knowour clients personally, which is the best wayfor us to help ascertain what coverages ourclients need. Our knowledge and experi-ence is also a benet to our clients helpingthem understand and navigate the processof ling a claim. Clients receive scheduledfollow up coverage reviews so we can

adjust their coverage as their needs changeover time.

How has your industry changedover the years?

There is an enormous amount of data nowavailable to insurance companies to help

them customize a rate to a specic cli-ent. This includes localized neighborhoodweather patterns, payment history, vehiclesafety systems, building damage suscepti-

bility, and the list goes on and on. This is beginning to cause rate differences betweeninsurance companies, for the same client,to be smaller than in previous times. Weare now able to spend more time evaluatingclient’s specic coverage needs and lessenthe possibility of coverage gaps. One thingthat has not changed is that people wantto obtain coverage from someone theytrust, specically a referral from a friend orfamily member. Referrals continue to beour largest source of new clients and they also

have the highest client satisfaction. Anotherthing that remains constant is that people reallyvalue that we care about them personally andwe act accordingly.

Delphos Granite Works is a full serviceprivately owned memorial company. Wehave the craftsmen to do the sandblasting, laser and diamond etching, and nal detailson all the memorials we create. Our goal isto educate our customers about the differentchoices in granite and the various options inthe stone carving process to create a uniquelasting tribute, that when completed, avoidsany surprises or disappointments. The nalresult is an exceptional, eternal monumentto last for generations.

How did the business get started?

In 1880, J.G. Birkmeier began producingquality memorials along the banks of the

Miami Erie canal in Delphos, Ohio. In1991, Mike Birkmeier, great-grandson andfourth generation memorialist, foundedDelphos Granite Works. Mike continuesthe tradition of providing the same qualityand craftsmanship that his great-grandfatherstarted over 135 years ago. Delphos GraniteWorks is a full service memorial company. We can manufacture for you traditionalmonuments, grass markers, slants, bevels, columbariums, and mausoleums; and inaddition we offer bronze plaques, statues, vases, pet markers, memorial portraits, andsigns of granite or bronze. How has the vision of the businesschanged?

      Technology has greatly changed design

and artwork used with monuments today.Whether you prefer a simple design or amore elaborate memorial, it can be per-sonalized to even the smallest of details.Pre-planning and purchasing a memorial

in advance has become more of a norm.Pre-planning has many positives and moreand more people are taking advantage ofthis type of memorial. Also, cremationmemorials are more available in manydifferent designs. These meaningful monu-ments allow for different design options tosecurely hold the cremation canisters insidethe monument.

A favorite aspect of the business? Obviously, the memorial business can be avery emotional and sensitive business. Mygoal is to treat our customers with dignity, along with offering specialized assistancein this very important process and decision.

No two individuals are the same; hence notwo memorials are the same. There are un-

limited options when designing a memorialand our professional staff can guide youthrough the process and help you tell yourstory. My commitment to my customers isgetting to know them so I can help them

create a personalized memorial. I strive tooffer quality craftsmanship, premier granite, and professional service, all at the fairest

price. It is a business that in my opinion stillrequires “hands-on” service. I have takenseveral customers through the plant in Del-

phos to show them not only what we do buthow it is done. They can see for themselveshow we do all the design work in-house byour own artist.

In high school, Brian Martin, owner ofPuckerbrush Pizzeria, worked for his dadat the Getaway Bar and Grill in Woodburn,Indiana. At age 19, he moved to Floridaand continued to work in the hospitality in-

dustry holding various jobs from server tobarkeeper and chef to brew master. Martinspent 13 years in Florida honing his skills. For three years, before he moved backto the area, Brian was snow-birding. Hewould come to Ohio in the summer to raisea huge garden and sold his produce at areafarmer’s markets and then he’d head backto Tampa to work as a personal chef in thewinter. One summer, he saw that Zublee’sPizza was for sale and said to himself,“I can do pizza”. He had been workinglong hours in Florida and was ready for achange of pace. He opened PuckerbrushPizzeria in 2011 and has been reaping moresuccess than he ever imagined.

What does the name of your busi-ness represent?

One day as I was watching TV, I came

across a National Geographic show aboutthe black swamp. As I watched, the showdescribed a small logging community inthe swamp called Pucker Brush. Pucker-

brush can also mean in the boonies or offthe beaten path and thus the name of this

     pizzeria was adopted.

What do customers love mostabout your business?

People love the consistency most of all. No matter how many times someone orderssomething, we strive to make it just righteach time. They also love the variety and“off the wall” menu items that you can’tget anywhere else.

    Favorite aspects of your business?

I love seeing the impact I’m having on asmall community. Seeing happy, gratefulcustomers and staff is awesome. Teachingyoung adults how to run a business andwatching them hustle and thrive in thisenvironment has been really rewarding.Another aspect that I love is being able to“ex the creative muscle” and encouragingmy staff to do the same.

How has the vision of your busi-

    ness changed?

The vision of my business has been molded by the needs of this community. Origi-nally, it was all about making great food.

Now, we still make great food, but I wantto give back by teaching others how tomanage a successful business. Not onlyhave I worked with my own staff so theycan thrive in whatever they do, but I’vealso been consulting other business owners.

I welcome the opportunity to work witharea business people to help them growtheir restaurants, bars or the like. In Tam-

pa, I was hired to help a bar that was onlyopen for dinner expand to offer a lunch

buffet and they have been experiencinga robust lunch crowd ever since. I knowwhat it takes to succeed and I want to sharethat knowledge and experience to strength-en this community.

    How has the busi-

    ness grown overthe years?

With more sales andservices offered weoutgrew the building downtown. Both cus-tomers and employees love the new build-ing. Everyone is more comfortable here. It’s bright, welcoming and customers havea TV in the waiting area to enjoy while theywait for their service work to be completed.

What do customers love most aboutyour business?

People know us. Customers keep comingback because they trust us and know thatthey’ll be treated right.

    Favorite aspect of the business?

I love that we work well together. It trulyis a family-type atmosphere. Most of us

have been here for many years. We jokearound with each other, but we also worktogether to reach goals and we’re rewardedfor that hard work. General Motors (GM)has a formula in place when calculating adealership’s performance; they call it ourGM Score and this score determines bo-nuses throughout the company. They lookat customer surveys, sales, training service

reviews and other criteria. We all have towork together and give our customers the

best to be rewarded in the long run.

    Chris Martinez,Customer Care

    Manager

Most memorablemoment with acustomer?A customer called infrantic that she hadlocked her keys in hercar, while it was running and her grandchildwas still in it. As she was on the phone, Icalled On-Star for her and they were able

to unlock it for her within seconds. She wasso happy to nd out just how importantOn-Star could be. I love helping people andthat what’s makes this job really rewarding.

The friendly at-mosphere, courteous service and vehicle

pickups are all reasons why customer loveour service department.

    Most memorable moment with acustomer?

We had an older couple call in the middleof winter because they couldn’t get theircar to start. I drove out to their house andreplaced their battery for them, right in theirgarage. Customers are so appreciative andreally surprised that we will go out to their

property to service their car when they can’tget it to the shop.

What’s your favorite aspect aboutyour business?

The family-type atmosphere and how wellwe all work together. On top of that, our

boss will do anything for any of us.

Why has Paulding County brought your

     business longstanding success?

I think it’s hometown loyalty and a sense ofcommunity in the county that really bringscustomers back time and time again. Wegive them the same services that any otherdealer would, but I think people in this com-munity like to keep their business local.

    Brad (Bubba)Davis, Sales Rep-resentative

What do custom-ers love mostabout your busi-ness?

I’ve found that customers who aren’t fromhere are blown away at the small-townfriendliness. They’ll tell their friendsand family and the word-of-mouth keepsspreading. Our customers are treated likehumans, not just numbers. We don’t treatthem like they are one and done. We knowthey’ll be back for service or their next

purchase and it’s all about building a goodrelationship. And it doesn’t matter whoa customer works with, each salespersontreats them as if that customer is their own.

Favorite aspect of the business?Family atmosphere! When one person isstruggling, whether it’s work related or liferelated, we all pitch in to lift them up.

    Most memorable moment?

For me, it’s when Tasha was going through breast cancer treatments. We were allscared for her and so were our customers.

People would stop in asking about her daily.Everyone was praying for her. One day,Tasha came in without her wig on and it hitme really hard. It just put things in per-spective for me. I’ll never be the same afterexperiencing that, but that’s a good thing.

    Jay Dachenhaus,Sales Represen-tative

How has Pauldingchanged sinceyou started your business?

It’s spread out moreand that has a little to do with our new lo-cation, I guess. It’s mostly the internet andtechnology that have changed Paulding andthe way our business operates now. We sellcars all over the globe now. Technology has

changed our products too. It used to take15 minutes to show a car and now it cantake up to an hour to show customers all the

     bells and whistles.

What do customers love most aboutyour business?

    That new car smell!

    Most memorable moment?

An older lady bought the most soupedup Bonneville we had, many years ago.She wanted to check out all the bells andwhistles…while we were driving down theroad! She’d say, “Oh! What does this do”,as I clung to my seat. I literally could hearevery mailbox whoosh by as she drove waytoo fast for my comfort. That was the mostmemorable and scariest moment for me.

Favorite aspect?Meeting people, helping them nd the carof their dreams and making friends at thesame time.
