BRAZILNew staff, new equipment and a new approach to lab services sum up an exciting and busy year for SGS Brazil.
The country’s agriculture industry has enjoyed exponential growth in the last 35 years, and shows no signs of slowing down. According to figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Brazil’s grain yield in 2015 is forecast to be 5.7% higher than the previous year, and it is the only sector showing significant growth despite the country’s recent political, economic and currency issues.
Soybeans are expected to increase by 10.1 million MT to 98 million MT; the corn - second crop - harvest is expected to increase by 5.6 million MT to achieve total production of 51 million MT; and for rice, the crop is predicted at 12.5 million MT, an increase of 0.3 million MT
INSPECTION SERVICES
With the summer corn harvest season in full swing, our inspectors are busy across the country supervising, weighing and sampling harvests, as well as conducting quality control testing on those samples. Our inspectors are also on-site to deliver the full range of trade services for Brazil’s sugar, peanut and soybean crops. In a year of constant evolution, we have recruited new staff to our team and restructured the business to increase our focus on delivering only the best services.
INLAND SERVICES
Handling supervision for commodities including soybean complex, cotton, maize, cotton seed, livestock and lecithin, our inland services team employs some 300 people to ensure that we can deliver effectively across the whole country.Whilst we’re kept busy classifying and grading

Our laboratories are recognised and/or approved by:
• INMETRO (National Institute of Metrology)
• MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Cattle Raising and Supply)
• GAFTA (Grain and Feed Trade Association)
• FOSFA (Federation of Oils, Seeds and Fats Associations)
We are also investing in a seed quarantine laboratory, which we expect to be fully operational later this year, and a GLP pesticide residue laboratory where we will be able to analyse new molecules for use in pesticides.
SGS Brazil has invested heavily to improve the customer experience and deliver a truly countrywide service.
FOOD & CERTIFICATION
Elsewhere, our new meat audit service launches this month. This is a growth market for Brazil, driven by the quality of local product and rising global demand for higher protein diets and convenience foods. Newly recruited auditors and a veterinarian will conduct audits to enable the certification of products, factories, farms and production lines.
SGS also audits and certifies management systems against internationally recognised standards including ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and many more. SGS operates across the agriculture value chain to minimise risk and maximise profitability through inspections, verification, testing and certifications of both crops and operations.

ARGENTINA
SGS Argentina delivers trade, inland and laboratory services across the country to ensure that quality and saleability are maintained.
TRADE & INLAND SERVICES
Building on the success of previous seasons, our trade services team works across the country, with a permanent presence at Argentina’s major ports including the up-river ports of Rosario, San Lorenzo and San Martin, and the southern ports of Necochea and Bahia Blanca. We also operate one of the country’s biggest agriculture services laboratories, based in Buenos Aires, alongside our administrative offices. With this team in place, and continuously investing in new technology and new personnel, we offer a full service to commodities traders, from field to point of delivery/export.
In the corn sector, we offer the full range of trade services, plus SGS’s identity preservation programme (IPP). This means that we test and verify corn harvests to guarantee their status as non-GMO, thereby increasing the price per tonne and ensuring market acceptance.
In the peanut industry, we are also able to deliver:
• A network of five dedicated regional laboratories, including three on-site at key production sites, which completed overall last year a total of 111,515 determinations on some 42,380 samples
• An online portal allowing clients 24-hour password protected access to inspection, testing and analysis results
• Permanent presence at production plants providing supervision of the whole production process
LABORATORIES
In addition to our regional laboratories, our main facility in Buenos Aires delivers expert support to Argentina’s producers
to ensure the quality, quantity and safety of their commodities.
Staffed by highly qualified experts, the team last year completed a total of 14,886 determinations on some 6,386 samples of products including corn, soybean, wheat, barley, sugar, and many more. Our laboratory services include:

(GMO) detection • Seed analysis • Proximal analysis:
• Analytical routine for cereals, oilseeds, by-products and foods:
• Nutritional profile • Residue analysis:
• Mycotoxins • Antibiotics • Pesticides • Heavy metals and many more
Our labs are ISO 17025 accredited, SENASA (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria) authorised and ISO 9001 compliant. We are also GAFTA and FOSFA member analysts, as well as INASE accredited.
FOOD & CERTIFICATION
In addition to the above-mentioned capabilities, our laboratories can also conduct the full range of food and feedstuff analyses. For certification services, GMP+ certification audits continue to be a regular feature of SGS Argentina’s service delivery, with particular regard to crushing plants in the feedstuff sector.
FIELD STUDIES
SGS can conduct field trials to support the screening, development and registration of agricultural chemicals, biopesticides, biocides, fertilizers and new plant varieties including genetically modified organisms (GMO). A new field station has been built in the Junin province of Buenos Aires to that effect.
