Spruce Up Your Home For Spring. The skill of an artist who likes painting and trim work and the trained eye of a real estate agent skilled at making homes more sell-able is a winning combination.

Sure, it looks like winter now, but in a few short weeks ... Spring! And what does spring bring? An abundance of new For Sale listings of homes, meet Lori Whitney and Charles Loner, recent newcomers to the Kingston area from Toronto.Lori is a sales representative with Zolo Realty and Charles is an artist and together they own Green Home Service Co.Green Home Service Co. is a home painting, trim, drywall and general upgrades business now operating in the Kingston area. So if youā€™re planning to sell your home this spring, you may want to give them a call. In Loriā€™s words ā€œpaint-ing your home is the number 1 way to increase its value with a small investment.ā€I met with Lori and Charles at their home north of Kingston. After a scenic drive up a winding Bedford Road, passing countless lakes and narrowly missing the odd deer, I sat down with the couple for coffee and conversation.Lori was quick to point out the original acrylic painting behind me of Bob Marley. Charles is

an Ontario College of Art graduate and accom-plished artist, we discussed the art community in Toronto. Then the conversation switched to the easy breezy country style you wouldnā€™t ex-pect right away from new arrivals from Toronto. It turns out Loriā€™s family lives on the surround-ing properties. In fact right next door is the home of her brother who owns the Mill Street Cafe in Sydenham and Desert Lake Gardens.I was struck with the coupleā€™s compassion for the homeless as the conversation moved to their plans to build tiny homes on their vast acreage and provide them at a nominal rent to those who need temporary shelter.Taking sum of everything we talked about, in my view if youā€™re planning upgrades to your home, you couldnā€™t ask for two more amicable and dedicated craftsman.

ā€œAnd speaking as someone who hates painting and the sloppy mess I make proves it, for my money the skill of an artist who likes painting and trim work and the trained eye of a real estate agent skilled at making homes more sell-able is a winning combination.ā€Visit greenhomeservice.ca for a complete look at their services.

Taylor Talks Fashion Takes Kingston New year, new column! In Taylor Talks Fashion I will be going over the latest trends and where you can shop to keep your closet up to date. This column will explain how to dress for your body type, the occasion and the season. Everything will be based in Kingston, so that you will always conveniently be able to find the perfect outfit! I can definitely say that it is easy to be able to draw inspiration from the individuals that fill this city. Kingston is a city with an abundance of fashion diversity. So many people come in and out of Kingston over the years and they add and take their style along with them. From the many students that move here to tourist travelling through to the locals who have been here their entire lives. Unintentionally, people from all over the world come here and showcase their own unique tastes. Whether you have an opin-ion on it, or not, it still grasps your attention. This is a lot of what fashion is about, showcasing your individual style. Making the people around you think about style in a different way and hopefully it inspires them to get creative with their own. Kingston makes it almost too easy to bring your outfit ideas to life just by walking downtown Princess street. No matter where you look there is a retail store with a variety of fashion catego-ries. You could be looking for that perfect state-ment piece or just searching for a good pair of joggers, in this city you will definitely have your options. In my case, I am usually looking for both. As much as I love sporting that amazing outfit, there is nothing I love more than jumping

into a good pair of sweats at the end of the day. But whoā€™s to say that those pants wouldnā€™t make a great statement piece in your outfit one day. You even have your option of locally owned boutiques or retail chains. Shopping at thrift stores I find it very rewarding when you end up with a unique piece at a great price, especially for those on a budget. This column will help you take advantage of what Kingston has to offer for fashion that you might not have thought of before. Taylor Talks Fashion is a column that will give you the boost and knowledge youā€™ll need to embrace your true creative fashion sense. With the right tools and sources you can take on your day in a way that you might not have known was possible. It is amazing what one piece of clothing, jewellery or footwear can do to your confidence. An easy approach to achieving the self assurance that you deserve. ā€œLife is too shortā€, a phrase that is heard and said all too often, but all too true. So wear that dress or rock those pants, because in the end it is your life and you should feel and look incredible living it.

Follow Your VisionLet me ask you this ā€“ how often do you sit and think about what you really want in life? What you REALLY want. Do you dream of what you would do if you won the lottery? Or make a mental list of who you would give money to, what kind of house and car you would buy, quitting your job, and the places you would travel to. Now let me ask you this. What are you waiting for? Donā€™t get upset with me when I say the following. What if I told you that you can manifest it all for your-self without winning the lottery. Well, you can. One of the ways I am going to discuss in more detail below is the idea of creating what is called; a vision board. Before I do that I would like to explain a few things. Many of you may have watched The Secret ā€“ a fabulous film that spoke a lot about manifesting everything you could ever dream of. I feel the film fell short. It takes more than pretending to drive your BMW in the chair of your living room to create it. We may have to rec-ognize and let go of subconscious patterns that exist in our minds, and change the negative self-deprecating thoughts before we can manifest what we truly desire. There may be blocks we need to remove and/or heal or lessons that need to be learned before we move forward. I also believe that the film did not discuss the idea of giving AND receiving. It is not all about com-mercialism and getting ā€œstuff ā€ ā€“ but about the bigger picture that we are all a part of. And giving back is an integral part of the natural process of life.I have touched briefly on the topic of manifestation ā€“ it is one that I would love to write much more on. I am here to happily coach you personally when you require more guidance or information.Create a vision board that really worksYou can manifest faster and more easily by creating a vision board for yourself. Vision boards are a way to remind ourselves of our goals on a daily basis. The more we see it and stay focused the more likely the items are to manifest and show up (and it speeds up the process!).You see, we can dream and talk about things for years and years. Why not take an active role in creating the life you dream of, and that you deserve to live now? A vision board does that ā€“ it creates a tangible object for you to collect and display your dreams and goals in one place. And you can always add as you go along. I have a huge one in my office that I add to all the time. Hereā€™s how:First, brainstorm a list of all of the things you would

like to see in your life ā€“ let it free flow without judg-ment or limitation: how you would like to look and feel, the activities you would like to do in your leisure time, vacation spots, your home, car, books, a roman-tic partner, poems, quotes and phrases that inspire you. Then put on some great music, go and collect all of your magazines and catalogues, and begin to cut out everything related to that list. And donā€™t stop thereā€¦ cut out everything you love, that catches your eye; anything that intrigues you. It might be a sunset, a gorgeous colour, or a big fresh salad. The images donā€™t have to make sense; but you do want ones that make you happy and satisfy something deep inside of you. You will find ideas that you never thought of as you search through your magazines or browse on the web. Donā€™t limit yourself, this is the time to go outside of your comfort zone and dream BIG BIG BIG. The internet is a great place to find and print out images and quotes you might like to incorporate into the vision board. Now that you have your huge pile of images, letā€™s build it. You will need a glue stick and a large piece of card-board poster stock (2ā€™ā€™x3ā€™ for sure.) Arrange all of the images on the table beside the poster paper before you start gluing them on. Now hang your vision board in a place where you can easily see it every day. Here are a few visualization techniques for you to experiment with:Take a few minutes each day and visualize everything you have on the vision board, or stand in front of it and take note of it each morning.Another visualization technique for you to try in the morning before you get out of bed: take a few mo-ments to visualize clearly everything you want in your life; begin your day that way, with that frame of mind. This part is key to manifesting: visualize the goal as if it has already been achievedā€¦ notice how it feels to have it nowā€¦ take a moment and think of one thing you would like right now ā€“ close your eyes and see it before youā€¦ that life you want, a new carā€¦ feel the feelings of being in that placeā€¦ allow yourself to see it, feel it, taste it. The more sensations you can bring alive while you think and dream, the more powerful your manifestation process will be.Now go ahead and dreamā€¦and let me know the results!!!

He conducts interviews with climate leaders on his Carbon and the City video blog and his YouTube channel, CarbonMedia and he broadcasts the Carbon and the City radio show Sundayā€™s on CJAI 92.1 FM.

In my December/January column I put the spotlight on Mark Greenwood, Ameys Taxi for some of the remarkable environmental things he has done in his business. One of those being his early adoption of Bullfrog Power in his operation. Inspired by Markā€™s story this month I decided to take a closer look at Bullfrog Green Energy.

Reading from their website: ā€œBullfrog Powerā€™s vision is to be Canadaā€™s source for smarter, greener energy solu-tions. Our mission is to inspire and empower people to lead the way to a renewable powered future.ā€

Bullfrog Power began operations in 2005 with the goal to provide homes and business with a green energy alternative.

Operating in the manner of a carbon offset, when you sign on with Bullfrog Power the electricity you use from say; Utilities Kingston or Ontario Hydro is offset with an equivalent amount of green energy, pollution free kWhā€™s that Bullfrog adds to the grid on your behalf. You continue to receive your regular electricity bill and you also receive a separate bill from Bullfrog for the additional cost of bullfrogpowering your home or business with green electricity. Bullfrog uses the revenue to invest in more Green Energy projects that feed into the grid such as: wind, solar, and natural gas. To date Bullfrog has added over three million MWh of electricity and six million GJ of green natural gas to the pipeline and displaced over one million tonnes of co2e emissions.

Clearly Bullfrog Power is a commitment but itā€™s a commitment many local residents and businesses are willing to make to ensure a cleaner future for our kids. I spoke with two local businesses that have been with Bullfrog since near the beginning.

Alex LeBlanc owner of Birds ā€˜n Paws located at 79 Brock St describes his store as a small box, big selection store. Birds ā€˜n Paws has been in operation for 18

years and Bullfrog Powered since Bullfrogā€™s beginning. Thatā€™s a lot of green energy and a remarkable com-mitment for a small box store in downtown Kingston. Well done Alex.

At Cher-Mere we are vested in the beauty inside us and around us. We understand as a company that we are part of a bigger picture of all natural and worldly beauty and the importance of preserving and being responsible on what our foot print

is on a larger scale. As such, we try where possible to incorporate sustainable practices at our spas as well as in the manufacturing of our Cher-Mere branded products. We are members of Sustainable Kingston, green economy program, so that we can track the output of our green house gas emissions and monitor the use of our utilities. We have implemented in our spas, dimmer switches, and LED lighting where possible, we use reusable towels instead of disposable paper waste amongst other things and of course since our inception we have utilized BullFrog Power. In our manufacturing process, we use solar power and in our packaging we use a combination of post-consumer recyclable and recyclable materials. We are always looking for ways to tweak and improve what we are doing.

New Island Ferries Take 1357 Ford Mustangs Off the RoadThe electric vehicle disruption is picking up speed. According to a recent Bloomberg graph there are now over 5 million electric cars on the road and the time gap between each million up tic is getting narrower with higher predictions forecast for 2019.Iā€™ve even heard rumors that some of the larger shipping lines are working on fully electric ships. Closer to home this maritime electric propulsion phenomenon is coming to the islands. In 2017 Ontario ordered new fully electric and bigger ferries for both Wolfe and Amherst Islands. Ontario is investing $94 million and the federal government is kicking in $31 million. The new Amherst Island ferry is due for delivery in 2020 and Wolfe Island gets theirs in 2021.

Combined the two ferries will eliminate 7,400 metric tonnes of CO2e Carbon Pollution. The news release I read in order to write this article says that this pollution reduction is equivalent to taking 1,357 cars off the road.

Curious, I wanted to know what type of cars these are and what would that equal in say pick-up trucks. If youā€™re a regular reader of my columns you already know that Carbon Calculation and Reduction Math is my thing, so I did the math.By my calculations the cars represented in the news release would very likely be 2018 Ford Mustangs with a km/l range of 8.3/1. Taking the math a bit further that same 7,400 tonne re-duction would be the equivalent of taking 1174 Ford F150s or 1013 Chevy Silverados off the road. Getting back to cars it would be equiv-alent taking 1088 Lincoln Navigators or 1721 Chevy Impalas or 2055 Mazda 3s off the road. To be clear the lower the number of vehicles the higher that make and model carbon emissions are. Isnā€™t carbon math fascinating. Now that my Carbon and the City banner is also a 2 hour radio show on Amherst Island Radio, CJAI, 92.1 FM, I am very much looking forward to the clean air and comfort the new ferry will bring to my Sunday crossings.

Michelle Deschenes, owner of ACE Nutrition, knows good food when she sees it. She knows good food when she tastes it. Lover of wine. Lover of food. Well travelled.

Cultural studies worldwide is a blessing. The oppor-tunity not only enriches personal growth, it enhances and diversifies us culturally and educationally. Early January this year I had the pleasure of experiencing India for the first time when I travelled to Mumbai and Goa.

Being in the heart of Mumbai bombards your senses with sights, sounds and smells. Colours are every-where, the smells of the incense and spices, and the hustle and bustle is captivating. I love the energy of the city and itā€™s streets!

There are so many options in terms of food establish-ments. An integral part of everyday life are the street vendors that have a steady flow of locals relying on their offerings. Pictured is a man serving up a popular traditional yogurt-based drink called ā€œLassiā€.

As a large country, the cuisine in India differs from north to south and east to west. Southern India dishes commonly include coconut, curries, red chillies and fresh fish/seafood. The 80 acre ā€œTropical Spice Farmā€ features a 200 year old coconut tree that still produces fruit, and lemongrass tea (green cardamom, ginger

root and lemongrass). King of the spices is black pepper, and the queen is green cardamom. The unique final flavourings of most south Indian food comes from the leaves of curry trees. Garam masala, cumin, coriander, fennel, cinnamon and cloves are among the other popular spices.

The markets are a sensationally vibrant and colourful tetris arrangement of beautiful cascading fruit, vegeta-bles, pulses, spices and flowers. Your senses are piqued with a visual assault of colours and the aroma of exotic spices. Among my favourites are the Crawford Market and the Colaba Causeway Market both of Mumbai, and the Municipal market in Panjim.

Surprisingly, one of the best places in the world to hang a hammock is India. Living in a beach hut (more like a small bungalow) on Agonda Beach, South Goa for nine days was heaven. Delicious Goan cuisine cooked in a tandoori oven was served at tables beach front with the Arabian Sea a stone throw-away. Hav-ing swam daily and consuming primarily a delicious vegetarian diet (and fish) I returned home fit and rejuvenated and dreaming of returning one day soon.

The New Food Guide simplifies nutrition for Canadians. Has it created a greater need for a personalized nutrition plan to fulfil our individual needs?New messaging from Health Canada: if we develop healthy eating patterns then healthy eating will be-come a habit and our overall health will improve. The positive effect on our health includes a decrease risk of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

The new Canada Food Guide is a plate: Ā½ the plate should be fruits and vegetables, Ā¼ should be whole grains, and Ā¼ is protein. Examples include: fruits and vegetables (apples, carrots, broccoli); whole grains (quinoa, wild rice, whole grain pasta/cereals/breads); protein foods (legumes, lean meats, low fat yogurt). The beverage of preference should be water.

Plant based nutrition is a main focus. Health Canada encourages a healthy eating pattern that promotes mostly plant-based foods. Snacks should also consist of plant based options as often as possible.

What about protein? Dairy products have been moved into the protein group. It is important to know that dairy products are a significant source of calcium and vitamin D. Our individual dietary needs differ throughout the ages and stages ie. a toddlerā€™s nutri-tional needs vs. a senior. Dairy products are high in protein but it is important to look for low fat options for cheese and yogurt.

Whole Grains ā€“ when reading labels look for whole grains vs. whole wheat. Both whole grains, and fruits & vegetables are significant sources of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are your best friend as their primary function in your diet is to provide energy.

Goodbye Keto Diet ā€“ be cautious of the serving size of your protein. Make it your goal to have a Meatless Monday and consider pulses (beans, peas, lentils and chick peas), soy based products (ie. tofu), quinoa, nuts or seeds.

Gone are the serving sizes and the number of portions, which may lead to some confusion for those Canadians seeking more direction for their nutrition. Health Canada does emphasize that our nutrition on a daily basis affects our health. Therefore we know nutrition is of utmost importance. Weā€™ll have to do the best we can with the new guidelines presented to us.
